| Answer: | These rugs are PLUSH, deep pile rugs, and all rugs of this type require the same care. You have to turn the beater bar off, if you have one. It's thick with alot of pile, so it's harder to clean than most short pile rugs (I also have a 1/4" pile rug. It's easier to get it clean). Worth the extra effort for me because I want a thick rug, you may differ. |

| Answer: | Shag rugs are supposed to be cleaned in a different manner than you'd vacuum a carpet. This style is dense & plush (a lot of strands that aren't thin and are very close together), heavy w/ a 2" pile. So difficulty in vacuuming would come from the "density" (detailed above) more so than it being a high pile "shag". You'll need some muscle. Most vacuums can handle it. Dyson owners, in particular, may have difficulty (search online for your model & solutions if you need them for any vacuum type) In most cases you'd turn off the brush bar and if needed flip the suction adjustment up (top of the handle where the hose would be pulled out to use the attachments. Or use a fluffy bar roll (no bristles), a head cover made for your type of vacuum or clean it like a typical high pile shag rug. Shag Area Rug Vacuuming: 1) Roll the rug up (yes roll it). 2) Unroll it underside facing up & shag side facing down, flipping it's direction is easiest way to do this before unrolling the opposite way. 3) Vacuum the underside of the rug (use the appropriate method considering the construction of the underside of the rug, it's care instructions and your vacuum)...yes these are acurrate, search for Demonstration videos 4) Roll the rug again. Move it aside. Vacuum the surface the rug was on. Carpet or hardwood etc as you'd normally vacuum that specific surface. *Most of the debris will have fallen out of the shag rug onto the underlying area* (The Milan shouldn't require this method. Try different adjustments to how you vacuum.) 5) Situate your rug back to its starting position and unroll it right side up. 6) The majority of the dirt should have been removed. You can proceed to take the hose to your upright & a suitable attachment like a no tangle tool or stair/carpet tool, a hard floor articulating tool, whatever you have that works and doesn't get stuck on your shag.. (brush bar off and covering the main beater bar actually helps a lot btw) and clean any areas that remain if you see any. 7) Optional: Fluff it up with a light pass with your chosen method as you see fit. *This particular rug shouldn't require that technique. Most "shag" rugs at this price point shouldn't require that technique unless it's a vacuum problem that you aren't able to accommodate with its settings or available options/attachments. The Milan requires a bit of muscle/effort. Tip: Use your arms, not your back! Also helpful is your knowledge about your own particular vacuum (read your owners manual). You probably don't want to be rolling up and using the shag rug technique I described unless you absolutely have to! Especially since the largest size of this particular rug weighs approximately the weight of the average man. It's a 2 person job to roll, unroll, move etc. Lift with your legs, not your back of course. If you're handling this rug, especially in a larger size solo take extra care please. Hope this helps someone. Even if it's not particular to this rug. Calling it a shag rug for Cleaning purposes is misleading a tad. It is a high pile. Tips: Scotchgard is available for home use. Same products, lower price, no warranty. *Use the right type/style of pad. *Retail Store markup on "accessories" such as rugs is usually 400% & up. *You could* technically clean (most) area rugs the way everyone used to have to: Sweep it and/or take it outside & beat it out. If you do, find a tool specific for the task or wing it using a household broom if you must. Try it — once, revel at how sore you are the next day and then tell the tale to your grandchildren one day! |
