12 best tent waterproofing spray

Tent waterproofing spray is a product designed to enhance the water resistance of tents, tarps, and outdoor gear made from fabrics like nylon, polyester, or canvas. It's commonly used by campers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts to protect their gear from rain and moisture. Here are some key points related to tent waterproofing spray:

  1. Waterproofing Functionality: Tent waterproofing sprays typically work by creating a protective barrier on the fabric's surface. This barrier repels water, preventing it from soaking into the material. This helps to keep the interior of the tent or gear dry during wet weather conditions.

  2. Compatibility: Waterproofing sprays are versatile and can be used on various outdoor items, including tents, backpacks, rain jackets, and even shoes. They are suitable for a wide range of materials, including synthetic and natural fabrics.

  3. Application: To use tent waterproofing spray, you'll usually need to clean the item first to remove any dirt or contaminants. Then, you apply the spray evenly over the fabric surface and allow it to dry. Some products may require heat activation or multiple coats for optimal effectiveness.

  4. Types of Waterproofing Sprays:

    • Silicone-Based: Silicone waterproofing sprays are known for their durability and long-lasting water repellency. They are often used for heavier outdoor gear.
    • DWR (Durable Water Repellent) Sprays: These sprays contain chemicals like fluoropolymers to create a water-repellent surface. They are suitable for a wide range of fabrics and are commonly used on clothing and lightweight gear.
    • Wash-In Waterproofing: Some waterproofing solutions come in the form of detergents or additives that you can use when washing your gear. These are suitable for items that can be machine washed.
  5. Maintenance: Over time, the effectiveness of waterproofing sprays may diminish due to wear and tear. It's important to periodically reapply the spray to maintain the gear's water resistance.

  6. Environmental Considerations: Some waterproofing sprays may contain chemicals that are not environmentally friendly. Look for products that are eco-friendly or biodegradable if you are concerned about the environmental impact.

  7. Brand Varieties: There are various brands and types of waterproofing sprays available on the market, so you can choose one that suits your specific needs and preferences.

  8. Effectiveness: The effectiveness of tent waterproofing spray can vary depending on the quality of the product and the application process. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results.

In summary, tent waterproofing spray is a valuable tool for outdoor enthusiasts to protect their gear and stay dry during rainy or wet conditions. It's important to choose a product that is compatible with your gear's materials and follow the application instructions for optimal water repellency. Regular maintenance and reapplication can help extend the life of your outdoor equipment.

Nikwax

  • Adds UV protection to prevent sun damage and double the lifespan of gear; works best after application of Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarWash
  • Spray-on application
  • Great for use on tents, fly, backpacks, awnings, boat covers, umbrellas, patio furniture, and panniers
  • Water based, biodegradable, and contains no PFCs, VOCs, optical brighteners, or added scent

User questions & answers

Question: Does application require heat or time to fully cure
Answer: The seam sealer might help you, but the Nikwax Tent and Gear Solar Proof might not do what you want. It still leaves tent material breathable, so it's unlikely to seal air tight like you wish.
Question: Would this and the seam sealer be suitable for holiday yard inflatables? My older ones don't seem to hold the air as well as they used to
Answer: Yes. Though of course it depends on how thick you put on. Did a 7 person tent (fly, tub and ground cloth). Plus a picnic table covering sunshade with 1.25 bottles. Kelty Mantra 7 and Kelty Shadehouse Medium.
Question: Is 17 oz. enough to completely treat 2 three-person tents (7'x7' each
Answer: I wouldn't. I can't find it now but I think remember reading that this formula is intended for synthetics. I'd use waterproofing spray for suede/nubuck shoes on suede.
Question: Can this be used on the suede leather bottom of my Jansport Right Pack Backpack
Answer: I don’t think it would yellow. However I only used this product on a pair of dark color boots and you can’t even tell they were sprayed with this product. It is a great product as far as keeping dry. It was two winters ago and the boots still look like new with no evidence that they were sprayed at all.

Product features

Cleans Your Gear

Whether it's clothing, footwear or equipment, the first stage of the Nikwax process must always be to clean.

This removes contaminants, dirt and everyday grime that masks the water-repellent coatings on waterproof items. All water repellent finishes work at their best if the garments are kept clean.

Our spray-on and wash-in cleaners for clothing and equipment will safely remove any detergent residues ingrained in the fabric that would encourage wetting-out, ie. where water isn’t repelled from the fabric but absorbed into the fibers.

Waterproofs Your Gear

Whether it's clothing, footwear or equipment, the second stage of the process must always be to waterproof.

Using any one of our waterproofing products will ensure a durable, long-lasting effect against rain, keeping you, your feet or your equipment dry in wet weather.

Using Nikwax will maintain the breathable performance of gear, preventing moisture build-up on the inside of gear allowing it to be pushed from the inside out, keeping your body at the right temperature. At the same time Nikwax repels rain from the outer surface, keeping you dry from both directions.

Adds UV Protection to Your Gear

Breathable waterproof garments are most likely to get sweaty and wet inside when used in damp or wet conditions. If the outer fabric absorbs water, the garment can lose up to 70% of its breathability. Therefore, the Durable Water Repellency (DWR) on the outer fabric of your jacket must be maintained to ensure comfort. It will eventually wear off and need to be renewed.

Nikwax treatments contain elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibers, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. They stretch and move with the fabric so they work better and last longer.

User questions & answers

Question: What if you used this on canvas shoes? Is there a residue? Will it collect dust and pet hair like NeverWet does
Answer: Don't know. You should probably just use starboard.
Question: Has anyone used this on cardboard? If so, how did it work
Answer: Yes, I put them on my convertible top that was 10 years old so leaking a lot, but I put them on the top and no more leaking.Prefectly good for top! I recommend!
Question: It's good for cconvertbl top
Answer: I do not have a down coat, but I would not hesitate to use starseal on it if I did! I used this on almost Everything I use outside, from coats to boots to gloves, even my umbrella. It does have a strong oder that will last a few days, but does dissipate, it worked very well on all tight knit cloth and materials, it worked great on my leather boots and gloves for a week or so. Does no do well on lose knitted items, ie: sweaters, it does waterproof the material, but water still runs through the knit. I just ed purchased a new couch, and will be spraying with starseal before I leave for work in the morning. NOTE: APPLY ONLY IN WELL VENTILATED AREAS.
Question: Anyone tried this on a Down Jacket
Answer: I have only used this on my tent and tent fly. I wash and rinse and spray the product over entire fly. After a few minutes I use damp cloth to smooth out any excess spray. Then I let dry completely before I pack tent to store. So no heat required and when it dries it's good to go. Hope this helps.

  • Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use on polyester
Answer: I would think it would be fine to spray the outer fabric of the coat. I wouldn't apply so much as to saturate to down.
Question: Can I use this in a down coat
Answer: I sprayed a 7 person tent about twice with one can. Worked great. Went camping and had two small leaks near the seams after a heavy downpour over several days of camping. Used a second can starting with those areas and had no leaks the second camping trip! Now I just reapply with one can depending on how much camping we expect to do that season.
Question: How much of an area can one can cover
Answer: I understand your condition. I flew in the Navy, and pre-flights in the rain were the worst. I'm not sure this product is you. It's not resistant to abrasions, and would definitely not stand up to laundry detergent. It's designed to be applied to an existing water resistant material, like a tarp or tent. Although it says you can apply to other things like boots, in my opinion, this would cause the product to wear off fairly quickly. You have my sincere sympathy and hope that you find a good solution.
Question: I work in the oilfield. its raining like crazy right now. can i use this on my fr clothes, wash them, and still be water repellant? im soaked. lol
Answer: I have used it on rain coat, two pair UGG boots, isotoner gloves and a pair of UGG suede slippers that I always run outside in. Of course first 24 hours, AFTER bringing in house from spraying you will notice smell and may even feel a slightly different texture to your material items. After about 48 hours it's as if you never sprayed anything on them at all. Regarding dogs, I have a 215lb English Cream, Golden Retriever. Smartest dog I have ever known but I have to vac 2x a day just to keep up. Hair is not attracted to sprayed items at all. Enjoy your day. Bj

  • Apply it to repair or re-proof gear without worrying about the seal peeling or cracking; includes two applicator brushes
  • Packaging may vary

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work on a big agnes q core sleeping pad
Answer: No, its permanent.
Question: seam seal needs to be removed from time to time and replaced. Can this product be removed later
Answer: The problem is, although Seam Grip Sealer does waterproof seams, it NEVER dries! It remains sticky FOREVER! It's a failed product that apparently gets positive feedback from people who are delusional or in some way connected with marketing it. Harsh words, but I've tried it, and & I'm still hurtin' from having to go back over all my hard seam sealing work with a product that DOES dry so I didn't have a sticky mess in my packs, stuff sacks & tents. I'm not connected with ANY product & my advice is DON'T USE IT. E6000 is THE product for waterproofing seams - it not only waterproofs the seams, but also creates a tough layer that protects them, yet stays flexible; it costs half as much as Seam Grip Sealer & you get twice as much. And, It COMPLETELY dries in only a few minutes and you'll be able to apply any water proofing product over it with no problems. Seam Grip Sealer recommends sprinkling baby powder on the seams after application to help it dry - BABY POWDER EVERYWHERE? SERIOUSLY?! You WON'T be able to spray waterproofing on fabric covered with baby powder unless you want a sticky, useless mess! Another plus for E6000 is that its readily available in the hardware or automotive sections of all dept. stores. The only negatives are that it has a funky chemical smell that takes several weeks to go away completely & you have to work quickly smoothing it on the seams cause it dries FAST.
Question: will this work on the seams of canvas popup camper. Then be able to spray with water repellant after the sealant dries
Answer: I've done a lot of waterproofing (jackets, backpacks, tents, shoes) & I've tried Seam Grip Sealer & I HATE IT WITH A PASSION! It just never dries; after months & months it's still sticky (the company admits it's difficult to cure & recommends sprinkling baby powder on it to help it dry - BABY POWDER?! Who wants baby powder all over everything?!). And when it comes in contact with itself on a seam it sticks & when you try to pull it apart it rips away the sealer. Seam sealing is time consuming & I've wasted mucho time tearing off the sticky Seam Sealer mess & using much better products: For heavy materials I like E6000; it costs 1/2 as much for twice as much sealer, drys fast, stays flexible but is tuff & protects the seams. Because it does dry fast, be ready to work quick to spread it out & the funky chemical smell will go away in a couple of weeks. For lighter materials such as coats, I like Coghlan's Seam Sealer; it's easy to use, seals the seam well, drys quick & a 2 oz tube goes a long way, and again, is much cheaper than Seam Grip. If you want to glue two pieces of nylon together, I'd recommend Beacon Fabri-Tac - it bonds quickly & permanently, dries clear & is washable. It's not cheap, but makes a super bond & a 4 oz bottle will do a lot of projects.
Question: Does it stick nylon to nylon fabric for my waterproof jacket
Answer: It takes about 24 hours to dry completely , then add a second coat and let that dry completely .

  • Creates an extremely tough water barrier, while still allowing materials to breathe

User questions & answers

Question: Can this product be used on a leather stearing wheel to maybe hide that sticky feel
Answer: It should work on leather to stop it from absorbing water.
Question: will this make a boot or shoe water proof
Answer: Yes, it will.
Question: Can you spray the inside the shoes
Answer: Thanks for asking! We would recommend to spray the entire surface from 7 - 10 inches away with a light, even coat
Question: How much will the color be affected if used on white sneakers
Answer: I applied 2 coats & let dry completely between coats...outdoors (about 8-12 hrs between each coat, during 75+/dry weather & avoided inhaling fumes)...to a pair of relatively expensive, white, 'high top' sneakers & while slight...2 BFFs said they could barely notice the color change 'close up' when completely dry, & not at all when I was wearing them...it still bothered me. So, I put ONE 'SCANT' coat of white WAX, KIWI shoe polish over this 'waterproofing' & that worked great, making them as white as B4...Even 3 years later, I can't believe how good they still look. Living in SE Pennsylvania, I have worn them thru MANY DOWNPOURS/snowstorms/while cleaning snow off my car...even when I've, unintentionally, stepped in water puddles...stm…also at several sporting events, concerts etc. & my feet stay dry as can be! BTW, I haven't reapplied the Kiwi Waterproofing since I first got them, but I have reapplied the white shoe polish, after using a diluted REGULAR Dawn/warm water solution & a soft, microfiber cloth to gently clean & allowing them to dry completely...to keep them looking good, for as long as possible...& only notice 'dirt' & VERY SMALL amount of the white polish on the cloth, that easily washes off the cloth, so that tells me I'm not 'washing off/effecting' the original coats of waterproofing...A lot is still left in the can, but since it is 3+ yrs old, just getting a new can, for when I find a new pair of boots I'm looking for & sharing with Friends...MUCH cheaper for same amount, here @ AMAZON than I paid at a shoe store (price sticker still on it) & saw your question/concern. Hoping this helps...HAPPY THANKSGIVING/HOLIDAY SEASON!!

User questions & answers

Question: The can says don't use sprayed item until it is dry and cured. How long does that take? I'm drying my boots indoors at ca. 71 F
Answer: I used it for a canvas umbrella and can sit under it in very heavy rain without it leaking. I've had it on for over a year and it's still good (bought extra canisters for this year as previous stuff only lasted a season but haven't had to use them yet). My camping days are long over but I would certainly try this out for canvas tenting.
Question: Anybody use this for a cotton duck canvas tent? This seems like a good product for the job
Answer: Absolutely! Canvas, fabric, leather. It absorbs quickly, but you should give it at least 12 hrs drying time before exposure to water
Question: can i use this product on canvas or fabric
Answer: Yes, this is the best waterproofing spray I have ever tried. If you do a thorough job spraying it on (you don't need to soak your shoes, just completely spray the whole surface) your shoes or boots will be waterproof and will keep your feet dry. I re-spray my shoes once a year. The only wrinkle is: if the snow is so deep that it comes in over the tops of your boots, obviously no waterproofing treatment can help you.
Question: Is it true that this keep you're feet dry even in the snow? I want to know before buying anything
Answer: IT WILL LIKELY WORK IN HOLDING THE OUTSIDE OF SLEEPING PAD TOGETHER BUT I WOULD NOT USE IT ON ANY AREA THAT COMES IN CONTACT WITH YOUR SKIN WHILE YOU ARE USING THE SLEEPING PAD. IT IS TOXIC TO HUMANS AND OTHER ANIMALS.

Question: Can this be used to waterproof suede
Answer: I used it on a hat and a jacket about a year ago; I have worn them in the rain a handful of times since using the product, but that's been over the course of a year.
Question: How long will it make an item waterproof
Answer: I put this on my white gloves and do not turn yellow
Question: If i use it on a white pair of sneakers, will the sprayed layer turn yellow or is it clear
Answer: My husband uses this for expensive hunting boots that he wants to hold up. He cleans them carefully, polishes and then sprays with the Gear Aid. Great protection. When they are due for the process again, he starts again with cleaning and polish before the spray.
Question: Can I apply shoe polish over the or this product
Answer: I'd give them a few hours or a day to dry if you can. Depends on the elements outside. Don't spray your boots and then go out in the rain or snow. Best protector product we've found.
