I ordered these boots a half-size up (size 11) and they were the same length as the other pair we already had (10.5- but a different brand). I believe the size 7 will probably work well for thick socks and he will be able to wear them all winter if his feet grow a bit. The fleece liner is not that thick.

Answer:	The boots are sized by length of the foot. The size 11 is 7 and 1/8 inches. It helps to go up a little so socks can be worn with them.

Answer:	The "Y" is for youth, vs "T" for toddler. So the T sizes are all smaller than the Y sizes. After a 4T you would get a 5T. You would only get a 1Y after 12T or 13T.

Answer:	These boots are in Toddler sizes, even though it does not have a "T" after the size. I purchased the same size my daughter wears for a shoe. The boots are a little bit roomier than the same size in a sneaker/shoe (I find rain boots always are). Leaves room for a thick sock. If your child wears a size 9T shoe, then I would get a 9T boot and it should fit. I hope this helps.
