Answer:	I do not think I was clear in my earlier response. the red you are seeing is the symbol for medical alert, not the engraving which is on the flat part. Mine is not black, just engraved. As I said, I remember there being options and perhaps black is one. It's prettier with it just being engraved. My necklace is red symbol on front and black engraving on the black. also nice.
