11 best radio transceivers
Radio transceivers, also known simply as "transceivers," are electronic devices that can both transmit and receive radio signals. They play a crucial role in various fields, including engineering and transportation. Here's some information about radio transceivers:
Function:
- A radio transceiver combines the functions of a transmitter and a receiver into a single unit. It can send and receive radio waves, allowing for two-way communication.
Applications:
- Amateur Radio: Radio enthusiasts, often referred to as "ham radio operators," use transceivers to communicate with others over long distances, especially in emergency situations.
- Aviation: Aircraft use transceivers to communicate with air traffic control and other aircraft for navigation and safety.
- Marine: Transceivers are vital for maritime communication, allowing ships to communicate with each other and coastal stations.
- Two-Way Radios: These are used in various industries, including public safety (police, fire, EMS), construction, and manufacturing, to enable communication among teams.
- Radio Communications: Transceivers are used in walkie-talkies, CB radios, and similar devices for short-range communication.
Frequency Bands:
- Transceivers can operate on different frequency bands, depending on their intended use. Common bands include Very High Frequency (VHF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF), among others.
Modes:
- Transceivers can operate in various modes, including AM (Amplitude Modulation), FM (Frequency Modulation), and SSB (Single Sideband), depending on the type of communication required.
Range:
- The range of a radio transceiver depends on factors such as the transmit power, antenna design, and frequency band. Some transceivers are designed for short-range communication, while others can communicate over long distances.
Antennas:
- Transceivers typically require an antenna for effective signal transmission and reception. The choice of antenna type and placement can significantly impact performance.
Portable vs. Base Station:
- Transceivers come in both portable (handheld) and base station configurations. Portable transceivers are suitable for mobile use, while base station transceivers are stationary and often have more power and features.
Regulation:
- The use of radio transceivers is regulated by government agencies to ensure efficient and interference-free communication. Users often need licenses to operate certain types of transceivers.
Advancements:
- Over time, transceiver technology has evolved, becoming more compact, energy-efficient, and capable of handling a wider range of frequencies and communication modes.
Education and Resources:
- There are books and educational resources available for those interested in learning about radio transceivers, their operation, and the regulations governing their use.
Radio transceivers are integral to modern communication systems, enabling wireless communication across various domains, from amateur radio hobbyists to critical applications in aviation, maritime, and public safety. Understanding their operation and usage is essential for those involved in engineering, transportation, and related fields.

User questions & answers
Question: | where can I get the right software and cable for this? is there a car charger I can use for this? the ones I see are for the UV-5r...? thanks |
Answer: | No car charger exists yet. You could find a 12 volt to 10 volt down-converter for a car and charge it in the base charger. The base charger needs an input voltage of 10 volts. Internally it converts the voltage to 8.4 volts for the battery. You must use the base charger because there is a LI-Ion charger inside of it.The Baofeng labeled cable used for the uv5r will work. Make sure you do not get the less expensive non-branded cable. The chipset on the non branded version is counterfeit and it will cause issues. If you have the non-branded version, the radio will transmit when the cable is plugged in and an unrecognized device problem occurs on the computer. The software can be found here: http://www.miklor.com/UV82/UV82-Software.php. Additionally the daily build of CHIRP software will work. |
Question: | Is there a way to direct access any channel? If I have channels programmed, I try to push 27 (for example), but it never really goes to that channel |
Answer: | Not sure BUT just use the up or down arrows to go to the (programmed) channel you want. This radio is more user friendly when you PC program in the channels you want to use on a regular basis. Mine was easy to program with CHIRP. |
Question: | Can this be used to communicate with regular two way radios (i.e. midland, cobra) without having a license |
Answer: | No matter what you read anywhere on the internet, this radio can only legally be used to transmit on the 2 meter and 70 centimeter amateur radio bands by licensed amateur radio operators with at least a Technician-class license. It is only Part 97 certified, which means that even though it can transmit and receive on FRS, GMRS, MURS, and lots of other frequencies, such use is illegal. By "regular" two way radios (i.e. midland, cobra), I assume you mean the FRS/GMRS "bubble-pack" radios. This radio can indeed communicate with them, but not legally. It is not Part 95 certified. In fact, in order to use GMRS, you are supposed to have a license for that as well. |
Question: | It looks that I need HAM license to use these radios for twoway communication? can somebody recommend me one that doesn't? I need for fishing trip, thx |
Answer: | Recent FCC changes in the law allows 2 watt FRS radio's and GMRS- (NO TEST) license has been changed from 5 years $70.00 to 10 years. You can apply on line for a FCC GMRS license and pay by credit card. GMRS allows you up to 50 watts of power. As ham radio operator for 52+ years (W8LM) and a certified FCC volunteer examiner, all too many hams push for people to commit to ham radio, when FRS, MURS and GMRS are perhaps a better alternative. Especially when they only want to use the radio's to contact family or while hunting or in a small business.. FRS-GMRS- MURS radio services are all short distance communications all though with certain conditions reliable communication can be had in a 20 mile radius. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I can only hit two where I live. Is the extra 3 watts going to gain any range |
Answer: | ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA The extra watts will do less to improve transmission and reception than a quality antenna. As others have said, to increase your signal strength at the receiving radio by one S unit you have to quadruple the power output. The difference between the UV-5R standard radio and the "8 watt" "high power" radios is only a doubling of power. If you are on the move use the Nagoya 771 antenna (and watch you don't poke out your eye). If you are stationary, a homebrew 2 meter dipole or the Ed Fong antenna will significantly improve your transmission and reception. Amateur Extra HAM instructor VP local HAM club |
Question: | what kind of range can I expect |
Answer: | With the included antenna, you will get about 10 kilometers on open area land. About 5 kilometers in suburban settings. In urban settings, aabout a kilometer or two. In a boat, a bit further than 10kilometers. With the Nagoya extended antenna, you can make 20 kilometers, more or less, on open ground. However, use an external antenna on the roof of a building and you can double that range! Power does increase range. But, antenna increases range far more than more power. |
Question: | I am trying to receive frequencies in the 800mhz range but it will not allow me to enter |
Answer: | You can program these for whatever frequencies you want by downloading CHIRP and modifying the radio drivers with a text editor... Then just change the frequency range to 900mhz or whatever you want... I would not suggest trying to transmit at those frequencies but people have had some success with receiving frequencies out of band that way... You may also want to try an RF downconverter if you would rather go the hardware way instead of the software way... More info at http://www.brickolore.com/2012/05/baofeng-uv-5r-extreme-receive.html |
Question: | Which frequencies will I be required to become licensed for? How do I know which repeaters I might use and their associated membership fees? Thank you |
Answer: | You cannot use this radio in any unlicensed frequency. It is not type accepted for any radio service and is therefore illegal to sell, advertise, market, or ship to anywhere in the US. It is probably legal to use in a Ham band if you have a ham license. Ham licenses come with some great benefits, such as being able to use un-aproved radios, it is well worth the effort to get one. BTW, I have two of these radios. They work about as well as a UV-5R, of which they are a derivative They just over-powered a 5 watt radio to make it spit out 8 watts. It gets you VERY little extra distance and the transmission is really really dirty. It blows all over the 2 meter bands. If you want to see what the FCC does to out of service marketing Google "FCC DA-18-980A1". This radio has no legal use in the US except on the ham bands by hams. It is very illegal to use for MURS and FRS, and not even OK for FMRS. It transmits so dirty it is pretty obvious to anyone with a good HR rig with a display or an FCC truck that you are using a BF-F8HP. It's got a rather unique signal signature. If you want a Baofeng get one of these. They are all certified part 90 which makes them legal to sell and ship, and no questions about using them for Ham use. And get a ham license, it really opens up your options. User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a separation kit or does it depend on the seller |
Answer: | It comes with a 6p6c based connector line ('telephone' type cord) for relocating the head unit.Ronald A. is also correct about the speaker being in the main body, so unless you mount it under your seat you will need an extension speaker. |
Question: | Can you use chirp to program |
Answer: | YES you can now use CHIRP to program the TH-9800. I just did so this week. However, the cable I got with my radio has a counterfeit chip in it so you may need to roll back the driver. I run windows 10 and had to roll it back. You'll be looking for a driver with 3.2.2 something. Not difficult but something to be aware of. After rolling back teh driver, it works like a charm (CHIRP and the cable). |
Question: | hello, please somebody cant tell me what base antenna is good for this radio |
Answer: | If you are planning to use this radio as your base radio (and not mobile), why not use a diplexer to split the antenna connector into two (or more) antenna jacks? That would allow you to have (at a minimum) one antenna for 2m/70cm and another antenna for 6m/10m. Frankly, that will allow much better performance vs. anyone's compromised 4 band antenna (and I've tried several of them). |
Question: | Is there an extended cable for the removable face plate? Thanks |
Answer: | It comes with the extension cable and removeable face kit bracket. You will need to provide your own remote speaker or Bluetooth adapter. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used with chirp |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Will these communicate with bca radios |
Answer: | its a vhf radio it will communicate with any vhf radio |
Question: | What's the mileage on these? Looking for something that works in the foothills of the mountains in heavy timber and at least 2 or 3 miles |
Answer: | I used them recently on a road trip, I can’t say if there was interference from traffic, but on fairly flat terrain I lost comms after about 1.5-2 miles. |
Question: | can this be programmed for gmrs frequencys |
Answer: | Yes, they can be programmed for GMRS/FRS frequencies. Note however, they are not FCC type accepted for this use, however there are literally millions using them this way. And by the way, for GMRS, you do NOT have to lower power as the FCC now allows 50 watt radios on this band (maybe higher as their rules are changing every quarter, there is a current bulletin out from the FCC clarifying power on GMRS) FCC.gov and just search for GMRS Power limits. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this operate on police frequencies like a Motorola apx600 p25 single band ones do. I’m trying to use this like a police scanner |
Answer: | To use a radio like this to monitor police frequencies you would need to know their (unpublished) system key otherwise it won't receive. To monitor digital police frequencies I would suggest using a handheld digital scanner verses a handheld radio. |
Question: | Will this radio hit the some of the digital repeaters and digital frequencies |
Answer: | Yes it will work with both MMDVM, Openspot, local DMR, and Conventional Repeaters |
Question: | What is the output wattage |
Answer: | normally UHF is less than 4w. VHF less than 5W |
Question: | Will this unit work as an analog handheld on ham freq |
Answer: | yes, It works in both digital and analog frequency |
