Answer:	The top shelf is "capped" so you can't stack two together. However, I "think" that if you left off the top shelf, you might be able to keep building it up with the second unit. Don't hold me to it, though!

Answer:	I haven't tried it, but looking at the shelf - yes, you can omit any shelf. Each shelf is fixed at a given height, they are not adjustable. I think what you are asking is, if a shelf is omitted, what is the distance between the shelf above and below the omitted shelf? The answer to that is 28". (It's about 13 1/2", and the shelves themselves are about an inch tall.) Note that this is not a very sturdy shelf to start with - 'medium duty' at best. I keep kitchen appliances on mine - mixer, crock pot, a couple cook books, etc. - and it serves this purpose very well.
