Answer:	Your HVAC system (typically) uses 24Vac for control signals. The voltage comes from a line voltage (typically 120vac) to 24vac transformer. This transformer has 2 "legs" or wires coming out of it. One is typically referred to as the "hot" or 'R' wire and the other as the "common" or 'C' wire. All 24VAC thermostats need to have the 'R" wire run to them. That is the signal they switch to turn on/off the fan , heat and cool, etc. However, only some require the 'C' wire, so that wire is sometimes run and sometimes not run by the installer. If you remove your current thermostat form the wall you may see a terminal marked 'C' with or without a wire connected to it. If you don't have a wire for C but have wires marked, R, G,Y and W there is a workaround that doesn't require running that wire and , for Honeywell thermostats, it's The THP9045 wire saver.
