Answer:	Kinda of both and neither at the same time- imagine if vaseline were thick enough to hold shape, but thin & not so oily. If used as a hand cream, for example, it'll leave your hands greasy feeling, so it provides a protective barrier when used as a diaper cream, but the ingredient's (mainly the Calendula?) have a gentle healing property that seriously makes a significant positive difference. I also take a about a tablespoon of this, and mix it with about 40ml of "Shea Moisture- Raw Shea Butter Rub Baby Oil", and when he's got a yeast infection, pump a few squirts of this on his little tush AFTER applying the prescribed medication, to seal it all in, and to help heal the sores he gets from the YI. Pre-medicated ointment (when he only used Grandma El's) his diapers stayed looking brand new, just like the rest of the babies that use this ointment. No staining. I can't attest to how they rinse the diapers but the ointment appears to leave no stain after a year of applying it to a number of babies in cloth diapers. I'm using it for my daughter even though we do not plan to use cloth. Because I love it.
