When used toward the open side of the door the pinch guard will prevent the door from closing by leaving a gap bigger than a small child's fingers on that side of the door, however the hinge side of the door does close substantially. If you want to prevent the door closing on a child's fingers on the hinge side of the door, where the door meets the door frame, you will need to place the Finger Pinch Guard at the top of the door near the hinge side of the door. The forces generated at the hinge side of the door are very dangerous for small fingers and could result in amputation. This is especially true if one child is closing the door while the other one has fingers in the opening.

We have solid wood doors that are stained and it grabs the door even below the hinge without falling. Answer:	It can't be adjusted but it can be bent at the corners by the doorway as shown in the picture of the product. we used ours on a 72" opening and it works really well but it is curved out towards the hallway a little.
