The slot acts as a handle, so you can pour and clean without touching the rim of the cup. The seat is designed in such a way that it fits both over and slightly into the cup and we've never had a problem with pee leaking between. I had bought two others before this, and I'll say this is the best one I can find, a very well-thought-out and sturdy design, easier to keep clean than most.

Answer:	Requires assembly. You could choose not to attach ladder to seat. My grandson assembled, for me, for my great-grandson. Not sure how easy it would be to attach and reattach. My 2 1/2 year old great-grandson loves climbing the ladder and using the handles to hold onto while sitting. Folds nicely.
