You don't need to purchase a separate mattress as the one they provide is all a baby will need (honestly anything bigger can be a SIDS risk and is not safe.) it only has one sheet and it is not terribly thick. You will want to purchase extra so you can change them out as baby spits up or leaks, but any standard bassinet sheet will fit perfectly.

Answer:	I believe you could. You can definitely remove the mattress pad sheet, but I'd recommend buying a waterproof mattress cover to use anyway. My baby is 3 months and I've never needed to wash the fabric cover itself.

Answer:	Yes, it comes with a pad similar to a pack & play. Minimal cushion on it, but I bought a thicker, quilted sheet to go over it for added comfort. It's a great bassinet for a bedside sleeper and at a good price.
