13 best radiator leaks
Radiator leaks in automotive systems can be a common issue and may result from various causes. Identifying and fixing these leaks promptly is crucial to prevent overheating and potential engine damage. Here are some aspects related to radiator leaks:
Causes of Radiator Leaks:
- Corrosion: Over time, corrosion can cause weak spots in the radiator, leading to leaks.
- Physical Damage: Road debris or accidents can cause physical damage to the radiator, resulting in leaks.
- Faulty Seals: Gaskets and seals may degrade, leading to leaks around joints and connections.
- Pressure Issues: Excessive pressure due to a malfunctioning radiator cap or a faulty pressure relief valve can cause leaks.
Diagnostic Test Measurement Tools:
- Pressure Tester: This tool is used to pressurize the cooling system. It helps identify leaks by detecting pressure drops.

Diagnostic Steps:
- Visual Inspection: Examine the radiator for visible signs of leaks, such as coolant puddles under the vehicle or wet spots on the radiator.
- Pressure Testing: Use a pressure tester to pressurize the cooling system and identify leaks. A pressure drop indicates a leak.
- Coolant Dye Test: Add a dye to the coolant and use UV light to identify the source of the leak.
Repair Options:
- Radiator Sealants: Liquid sealants can be added to the radiator to seal small leaks. However, they are typically a temporary solution.
- Radiator Replacement: If the radiator is severely damaged, replacement may be necessary.Ensure the replacement radiator is compatible with the vehicle.
Preventive Maintenance:
- Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the radiator and cooling system for signs of wear, corrosion, or leaks.
- Coolant Flush: Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for coolant replacement to prevent corrosion and maintain the cooling system's efficiency.
It's essential to address radiator leaks promptly to prevent engine damage and maintain the vehicle's optimal performance. If unsure about the diagnosis or repair process, it's recommended to consult a professional mechanic.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to flush the cooling system before using this product if I had used bar’s tablet? I am choosing between these two since the leak is small |
Answer: | You do not have to flush the system, in fact you may flush it after to put in the Bars Leak and run for a couple hundred miles to make sure your leak is sealed. |
Question: | will this work on the head also |
Answer: | Try it...it's inexpensive. Whether it works depends on the specifics of your problem. I tried it on a 4 cylinder BMW with a new head and profile gasket and a slow leak. It worked great. |
Question: | can it be used in a Tahoe plastic tank |
Answer: | i used it in my volvo which has a plastic expansion tank and no problems. it won't fix big leaks but if you're losing just a little coolant over time and can't find the leak this is the stuff to use! |
Question: | My radiator leaking from the seam. Slightly overheating. Will this seal at the seam |
Answer: | It should, depending on how big the leak/crack is,the one on my semi truck was dripping big, half a gallon a day,I was worried bc that s a $2,000.00 repair,I bought it not expecting any results, since I had previously used Bars leak (the small silver bottle) and didn t work,so this was a prayer and a last hope, 5,000 mls later and not a leak, not extra coolant added,it is liquid aluminum,so it bonds to wherever the leak is and forms a sealing coat...I think of it as welding from the inside...I hope it works for you as it did for me,it really was an answer to prayer...I know I m a bit dramatic but it was.PS,try to follow recommended amount or as close as recommended, not much less and not much more,I used 2 bottles on a 11 gal radiator.God bless. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Liquid Aluminum is specifically designed to be directly added to the cooling system without having to flush out the antifreeze. It also can be used in water alone. But if using in water, it is recommended that another bottle of Liquid Aluminum be added to the system once antifreeze is installed.
Will it work in the new extended life antifreeze?
Yes, Liquid Aluminum works with all types of coolant including yellow, orange, pink, red, blue and green silicate based and non-silicate based OAT/HOAT antifreeze and/or water.
How long does it take to see results?
We recommend you drive/idle the vehicle for 10 to 20 minutes. In most cases the leak will be sealed instantly, but others will require up to 20 minutes. If the leak is not sealed in 20 minutes, a second application may be required or mechanical repair may be needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you mix this with barstop if you all ready put that in the radiator |
Answer: | I did mix this with Irontite All Weather Seal. Did the K-seal first. Irontite a week later. Just to be sure. Since they both said it can remain in the system. Two weeks, still good. |
Question: | Can you use this in a 2013 escape |
Answer: | Unless specifically told to use no heating system sealants I have no reason I can think of you can't use it. I used some but sparingly until it got the job done. Its a little bottle but still have half left. It's been okay for about 6 months now. |
Question: | Does it discolor the antifreeze? Thanks |
Answer: | Unfortunately I can't say. I have a GM vehicle that uses the orangish color engine coolant and it and this product are so close in color it's hard to say if it would discolor the usual green-colored coolant found in non-GM vehicles. The other challenge is that I can only look at the coolant through an overflow reservoir and it's so dark when I look inside (I have to use an LED flashlight to see it adequately) that it would be hard to tell if there was any discoloration. |
Question: | will this work for leakey gaskets |
Answer: | This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If the temperature gauge does not indicate that your engine is overheating, then this product will most likely work. No overheating at an idle for 45 minutes MEANS that the head gasket leak is still small enough to be filled by this liquid glass. Shake the container for 30 seconds, put the liquid in your COOLANT system, drive for an hour (or other words, operate at normal temperature, especially if its an aluminum block with cast iron heads), and then let it sit for 24-48 hours (the longest time is better). This sitting time allows the liquid glass to harden completely through. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also). But buy this and try it even if your vehicle fails the 45 minute test after 10 minutes. Sometimes, it will still seal the leak, or at least slow it down. Also, you can add this once a month for three months, and maybe that will work also (this gives you a month to see how the car performs under various conditions, and for the reason I just mentioned above). If you need the car to last for just a short while (month to six months) this can be a quick fix to hold you over until you can sell the car (under buyer be where conditions) or get it to the shop when you have the money. $15 and a few minutes of your time OR the mechanic, you have to decide. Good luck. I'm a retired mechanic with two degrees in Diesel mechanics and I ran a shop for a year.... :) |

Permanent Coolant Leak Repair with K-Seal
Coolant leaks don’t have to result in costly repair bills – simply add K-Seal to your coolant system for a quick and permanent fix. K-Seal is trusted by millions of customers worldwide, and the only coolant leak repair fluid carried by the AA, the UK’s largest roadside repair company.
K-Seal couldn’t be simpler to use. K-Seal’s unique formula will seek out holes and cracks, and permanently seal them, with no adverse impact on the efficiency of your engine cooling.
Coolant System Sealer
Once the crack or hole has been located, the microfibers instantly begin to mesh together within the gap, building a seal literally fiber by fiber to stop the coolant leaking through the gap.
The particles in our K-Seal products are very precisely designed to be large enough to repair holes up to 0.635mm in size but deliberately small enough to never block any passageways or tubes within the cooling system, including those inside the heater core and radiator.
Once the microfibers have sealed and fixed the leak, a combination of exposure to either the external atmosphere or the gases within the combustion chamber and the heat within the cooling system and engine causes the K-Seal formula to cure. This results in an extremely strong and permanent seal able to withstand even the high pressures from the combustion chamber. This is how K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurized exhaust gases entering the system
Common Coolant Leaks
K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.
Product description
It’s part of life: older cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and even RVs can develop larger leaks in their radiators and intake manifolds. If you’ve tried regular stop leak products, you know they are not powerful enough to stop these larger leaks. If you visit the service center down the street, you know just how expensive it can be to repair an intake gasket leak through a mechanic. Isn’t there a better way? There should be, which is why Bar’s Leaks designed the Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak. This one-step sealer was designed to quickly and safely stop these overwhelming leaks. When you’re experiencing a mild to moderate intake gasket seal leak, discover the fast, effective, inexpensive power of liquid copper. What does it do? Our formula permanently repairs larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds and gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. It contains an antifreeze-compatible sodium silicate liquid glass formula, so no draining of the cooling system is required. Not to mention, it will not harm the cooling system when used properly. The intake gasket seal you’ve been looking for is far more effective, easy to use, and less expensive than you’ve ever imagined. This is why Bar’s Leaks exists: To offer imminently usable, low-cost intake gasket seal and other products to auto owners who have no special experience or expertise. You’ll find plenty of options when searching for products to fix an intake gasket leak. While our competition may claim to stop the leak quickly, their products don’t always perform as advertised and they sometimes make things worse. Their stop leak products can’t get your car back on the road like Bar’s Leaks — that’s why we’ve been the most trusted stop leak brand since 1947. Throughout our long history of serving car owners like you, we’ve used a team of dedicated chemical engineers to constantly develop and refine products that are safe, fast and effective in stopping intake gasket leaks and other automotive problems — including liquid copper and much more. User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this product to stop leak on my honda element 2003 engine block? the engine block has a small leak |
Answer: | Thank you for your question and for considering Bar's Leaks Liquid Copper Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak (part number 1109). This one step formula was developed to repair larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs, so it should help you with a small leak in your Honda Element. Please note, though, that cooling systems that are dirty or partially clogged should be flushed before using. If you haven't had a chemical cooling system flush performed on your vehicle in the last four years, you might consider doing so now. Flushing with water will remove any loose sediment in the cooling system, but if there is any scale built up, it would take a chemical flush to dissolve and remove it, giving our product the best possible chance to stop the leak. If you have any questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. Question: | Can this help with a 5.3l gm engine with the bad cylinder head castings? i'm saving for a replacement engine, just need this one to last a while |
Answer: | Thanks for your question, and for considering Bar's Leaks to help with your vehicle's needs. The product you are asking about - Bar's Leaks Block Seal Intake & Radiator Stop Leak is a great product for repairing larger leaks in radiators, intake manifolds & gaskets, heater cores, blocks, heads and freeze plugs. However, if your vehicle is showing signs of head gasket failure due to the bad castings you refer to, we would suggest one of our head gasket products, such as Head Gasket Fix (part number 1111), which is very successful in sealing leaks as long as your vehicle can run 20 minutes or longer without overheating or needing to add coolant. If your vehicle is unable to run for 20 minutes without overheating, but can run for at least 15 minutes, we recommend our strongest head gasket stop leak - Head Seal Blown Head Gasket Repair (part number HG-1). For best results, these products should be installed into a clean cooling system, following the installation instructions and proper dosage. If you are unsure how clean your cooling system is, or you haven't had it chemically flushed in the last three to four years, we recommend doing so before installing any stop leak products. If you have any other questions, or we can be of further assistance, please feel free to call our Tech Support team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time. |
Question: | heater core leak fixed |
Answer: | The label on the lower right does show Heater Core. So this could work since coolant is being pumped through the heater core to heat the cabin of a vehicle. |
Question: | Will this help to stop a block leak where the water pump connects to the cooling system |
Answer: | No. This will only help with small leaks. As temp fix. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it stop leaks from top of Raidator |
Answer: | If you are asking about a plastic top tank that is clamped to an aluminum radiator the answer is "maybe"I had three vehicles with very tiny radiator leaks. All from the clamp seam at the sides (these were all Honda radiators) and the stop leak did work on those. One car required three bottles. But an older car with an all brass tank could not be leak stopped with just the stop leak. It did allow the owner to continue to drive the vehicle until he arranged for a real repair. The top and bottom brass tanks were unsoldered from the destroyed core and a new core was soldered in. Creating a brand new radiator. This was in an old 1060's Chrysler. |

Product description
"The OEMTOOLS Universal Cooling System Filler purges those problematic airlocks, checks for vacuum leaks, and then allows the technician to refill the system quickly and easily. USE IS SIMPLE: 1. Before beginning, the radiator must be completely drained of fluid. And the car should be engaged and the heater turned on, so that the heater coil is open and can be evacuated and refilled. 2. Find the right sized rubber bush for your radiator neck or coolant reservoir, and then fit the gauged cooling system adapter firmly into place. Turn the tightener on the valve clockwise until it snugly fits the radiator neck. 3. Connect venturi valve to the cooling system adapter, connect shop air to the venturi valve, and connect evacuator hose to the other side of the venture valve; make sure all valve openings are closed until the shop air is connected. 4. The hose on the other side of the venturi valve may evacuate fluid, if any is trapped in the system, so you may want to place that tube into a waste fluid pan. 5. Once the air line is attached, open the venturi valve, and the intermediate valve on the adapter assembly; Draw vacuum until the gauge reads between 50 and 60 cmHG) 6. Close the intermediate valve and venturi valve. If the vacuum drops, you have a leak in your system. If it does not, you’re ready to refill your coolant. 7. Connect your coolant hose. Drop the other end into a large container of coolant, mixed to your preferred specifications. Open the coolant tube valve, and the coolant will flow. Use a large container so that you won’t run out and introduce air to the coolant system. 8. When the gauge reaches 0 or the coolant stops flowing.
If something happens to it during normal use, it should be covered by the OEMTOOLS Limited One Year warranty. See product manual for full warranty conditions and restrictions.

User questions & answers
Question: | There was a small circular metal mesh filter gauze in the box, where does it go |
Answer: | Yes, it also works on some years of Ford Ranger . |
Question: | What exactly does "car should be engaged" mean? Also, ? if anyone else has there gage stick at 15 going up and down on gage and any fix |
Answer: | Probably the life of your engine LOL. The fluid doesn't light up by itself. You need a UV light flashlight to excite it. A cheap LED blacklight is fine. But, when I changed my water pump the antifreeze glowed easily. My water pump was leaking from the weep hole and there was a bright plume of green stain. In a darkened garage with the blacklight you would easily see any leaking antifreeze. Run in cooling system a few days then check for leaks. I put a new bottle in after replacing water pump and putting in universal long life antifreeze (Peak brand). |
Question: | What is the diameter of the plug connector? Will this fit onto a 1/4 coupler for air compressor |
Answer: | It will have an slight orange tint. BE VERY CAREFUL. This stuff dyes skin!. I recommend putting in radiator or removing hose from top of engine to pour down hose. You can add to overflow reservoir tank but it will take 2-3 days to draw into radiator. Doesn't effect anti-freeze, just glows under fluorescent black light. When my weep hole on water pump started leaking it glowed under it brightly. Works great but need 3-5 heat and cool of engine to show leaks. |
Question: | With this tool, is there a convienient way to pre-load the the filler tube with coolant so that a slug of air is not introduced in the system |
Answer: | Long enough to get the thermostat to open in warm weather it took less than 5 minutes. |

Answer: | Unfortunately, this product is not recommend for your Prius. We recommend using the Valvoline 5W-30 SynPower Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 1qt (Case of 6) (VV955-6PK), and the engine capacity is 3.9 quarts. For the drain interval, Valvoline always recommends following the manufacturer specified drain interval regardless of grade. It is recommended by Toyota to change the oil every 6 months or 5,000 miles for this vehicle. |

How does Bar’s Leaks work?
Bar’s Leaks will seal external, internal and coolant leaks. Once installed, the Bar’s Leaks particles shrink up to 15 percent. On an external leak, the tiny particles flow to the point of the leak. They then collect at the outside of the seepage and build inward. Internal leaks, the particles will burn when subjected to the 5000°F heat of the combustion chamber to seal seepage and small cracks.
How long does it take for the Bar’s Leaks to work?
We recommend you drive/idle vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes. In most cases the leak will be sealed with in this amount of time. If the leak is not sealed, a second application maybe required.
Bar’s Leaks is more than just a stop-leak company

Product description
Prestone Radiator Stop Leak features a patented formula that quickly stops leaks in radiators, water pumps, and heater cores while also protecting against pitting and corrosion. Prestone Radiator Stop Leak takes sealing performance to a higher level by both stopping the leak as well as the corrosive condition that causes leaks in the first place. Its unique combination of natural and synthetic components provides the ability to seal leaks up to 0.020-inches x 0.5-inches. What makes this possible is the size, strength, and durability afforded by fibrous particles, the same materials in bulletproof vests. Prestone Radiator Stop Leak particles have been chosen to seal even large leaks without interfering with the flow through the radiator and heater core tubes. It also boosts corrosion inhibitors to protect against pitting and corrosion, which cause radiator leaks.

Question: | Is the core really 2.3 inches thick, most 2 core radiators are only 1.4 inches thick |
Answer: | Thank you for your question, and for considering Bar's Leaks Radiator Stop Leak Tablets (part number HDC) to help with a pinhole leak in the Cadillac radiator. As long as the coolant reservoir is pressurized, you may add the tablets there. For quicker results, you can also crumble the tablets up a little bit before installing them. The proper dosage is 2 tablets per gallon of coolant, and we do recommend installing them into a clean cooling system, following the instructions. If you have any other questions, or we may be of additional assistance, please feel free to call our Tech Support Team at 1-800-345-6572. We are here to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm, Eastern time. |
Question: | So what fittings would I have to get to make this radiator work in my 2003 6.0 with automatic transmission |
Answer: | Does not work, don’t waste your money |
Question: | Do I need to reuse the fittings from the old radiator? I have a 2004 F350 diesel automatic |
Answer: | I don't believe that this particular product will clog the radiator, hoses or heater core in any vehicle. I purchased this particular product because for my vehicle, a GM V-8 car from 2003, these tablets are added to the coolant both by the manufacturer when the car is first assembled and by the dealer when the coolant is being changed. These tablets are listed as a requirement to prevent trouble going forward. With 150,000 miles on the vehicle at this point with these tablets being in the coolant from day one, I've had no cooling system issues. These tablets are made of very finely ground up walnut shells and are not made with synthetic polymers or sealants. |
Question: | Does this have quick disconnect fittings for 05-07 models |
Answer: | Heater core leaks can be tough...... but yes... It should |

User questions & answers
Question: | can you use this on indoor plumbing I have a pin hole in leak in copper pipe under the slab of my house |
Answer: | I personally don't think it would work. Stop leak in a radiator has endless chances to stop the leak because the coolant-water continually recirculates. I don't think one flow by would be enough. I have had your problem. Trying to solder the pin hole is difficult if there is water in the pipe. I would clean around the hole with steel wool. I would force a small copper wire in the hole just about even with the hole to stop any flow of water. Then, I would solder over the wire. |
Question: | how many one should I use ? I've tried 4 packs of a similar products and engine is still smoking |
Answer: | Only 1 .... if you have used 4 others your leak is too large and with all that product in there you will need a professional coolant system flush and repair of leak |
Question: | Does it work with plastic radiators small leak |
Answer: | Not sure. Mine is metal. |
Question: | Does it work for heater core leak |
Answer: | I would have to say it depends on the size of the opening of the leak. If it is a very small leak, the perm-o-seal will work the same in the heater coil as the radiator. If you can't see the opening, then you will have to estimate by the amount of the leak. If it is rather slow, then for the price of perm-o-seal, it's worth a try. |

C&R Stop Leak is an item that can prevent a DNF in the event of a radiator puncture, cracked cylinder head, or head gasket problem. Many race cars have dropped out of races because of these problems. Up to now, the drawback of using stop leak was the residue that it left behind. Most stop leaks use ceramic and rely on air to make it coagulate and plug a hole or crack. This works well but the bad side effect is that when the water is drained from the system during an engine change, the stop leak will dry inside of the radiator, heads, and engine block leaving a ceramic coating. Ceramic is a good insulator but this is not what you want inside of your cooling system. Even products that don't contain ceramics will leave a residue. Any residue or coating inside the tubes of a radiator will reduce its efficiency. After extensive research, C & R Racing has found a stop leak that doesn't leave a residue. C&R Stop Leak stays suspended in the water so that when the water is drained, all of the stop leak is drained with the water leaving no residue.

User questions & answers
Question: | Tried using alumaseal, which isn't working. will i need to flush the system before using the k-seal |
Answer: | I used the HD Truck bottle on my 1998 GEO Tracker ( used 1/3 of the bottle ) of K-Seal and it worked. I have used so many to no avail. To answer your question, I must have @ least 3 to 4 other sealers in my colling system when I added K-Seal. It's been almost a year & no adverse effects having not flushed my radiator. Should I have flushed the radiator & the system? Yes, I should have. |
Question: | Will this work with aluminum heads |
Answer: | It works equally well with cast iron or aluminum. Great Stuff. Not a long-term solution, but it will buy you a lot of time. |
Question: | how much do i need to pour in a diesel 1 ton cummins |
Answer: | You need this one bottle for a Dodge 3500 hd. I have this one bottle in my HD Freightliner 330hp MBZ engine hauling freight (54,000 lbs cap) 6 days a week and it stopped my coolant leak in the engine bay and heater core with no blockage and no. My opinion, Many reviews say products dont work BECAUSE most people dont take care of their equipment and their vehicles are old, high mileage and no maintenance done. None of the add to a tank products are as good as replacing with new parts but thats expensive, we get it. This may or may not fix your problem but its a low cost gamble with a high probability of success. Dont listen to the negative reviews. If the problem comes back, your damage was too far gone and in need of replacement anyway. |
Question: | Does it work on potentially warped heads |
Answer: | Probably not, but read on, and learn about all coolant leak problems if you want and how effective this product is....This bottle is enough for up to 12 cylinder engines. This will work for any type of coolant leak, if the leak is small. This will work on head gasket leaks also, read this 3 minute read on what to do if its a head gasket leak. Also, for for your information - This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Okay, start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or heater core or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also).

K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurised by exhaust gases entering the system.
Common Coolant Leaks
K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.
