10 best coolant leaks
Coolant leaks in the context of automotive systems typically refer to leaks in the engine cooling system, which is responsible for regulating the temperature of the engine. These leaks can lead to engine overheating and other potentially serious issues. Here's what you need to know about coolant leaks in automotive systems:
Cooling System: The engine cooling system in a vehicle is crucial for maintaining the engine's temperature within an optimal range. It consists of various components, including a radiator, hoses, a water pump, a thermostat, and coolant (usually a mixture of water and antifreeze).
Causes of Coolant Leaks:
- Damaged Hoses: One common cause of coolant leaks is damaged or deteriorated hoses. Over time, hoses can become brittle, cracked, or worn, allowing coolant to escape.
- Radiator Issues: Leaks can also occur in the radiator itself due to corrosion, punctures, or other forms of damage.
- Water Pump Problems: The water pump circulates coolant through the system. A malfunctioning water pump with a leaking seal can lead to coolant leaks.
- Gasket Failures: The engine may have gaskets (such as the head gasket) that seal various components. If these gaskets fail, coolant can leak into the engine or external components.
- Overheating: Extreme overheating of the engine can cause hoses to burst, leading to sudden and significant coolant leaks.
- Loose or Damaged Clamps: Clamps that secure hoses to fittings can become loose or damaged, resulting in leaks.
Symptoms of Coolant Leaks:
- Overheating: An increase in engine temperature is a primary symptom of a coolant leak.
- Low Coolant Level: Frequent need to top up the coolant reservoir is a clear indicator of a leak.
- Visible Puddles: Coolant leaks may leave puddles or stains on the ground where the vehicle is parked.
- Sweet Smell: Leaking coolant often produces a sweet, distinctive odor.
Repair: Repairing a coolant leak typically involves identifying the source of the leak and addressing it. This may involve replacing damaged hoses, repairing or replacing the radiator, fixing the water pump, or replacing gaskets. The exact repair process depends on the specific issue.
Prevention: Routine maintenance, including checking hoses, inspecting the radiator, and monitoring the coolant level, can help prevent coolant leaks. Timely repairs of minor issues can also prevent more significant problems.
Safety: It's important to handle coolant with care, as it is toxic. Avoid direct contact with skin or eyes and dispose of used coolant properly according to environmental regulations.
Professional Assistance: If you suspect a coolant leak or are experiencing overheating issues, it's advisable to seek professional assistance from a qualified mechanic. They can diagnose the problem accurately and perform the necessary repairs.
In summary, coolant leaks in automotive systems can result from various causes, including damaged hoses, radiator issues, water pump problems, and gasket failures. Detecting and addressing coolant leaks promptly is essential to prevent engine overheating and potential damage. Routine maintenance and professional assistance are key to keeping the cooling system in good working condition.

User questions & answers
Question: | can you mix this with barstop if you all ready put that in the radiator |
Answer: | I did mix this with Irontite All Weather Seal. Did the K-seal first. Irontite a week later. Just to be sure. Since they both said it can remain in the system. Two weeks, still good. |
Question: | Can you use this in a 2013 escape |
Answer: | Unless specifically told to use no heating system sealants I have no reason I can think of you can't use it. I used some but sparingly until it got the job done. Its a little bottle but still have half left. It's been okay for about 6 months now. |
Question: | Does it discolor the antifreeze? Thanks |
Answer: | Unfortunately I can't say. I have a GM vehicle that uses the orangish color engine coolant and it and this product are so close in color it's hard to say if it would discolor the usual green-colored coolant found in non-GM vehicles. The other challenge is that I can only look at the coolant through an overflow reservoir and it's so dark when I look inside (I have to use an LED flashlight to see it adequately) that it would be hard to tell if there was any discoloration. |
Question: | will this work for leakey gaskets |
Answer: | This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If the temperature gauge does not indicate that your engine is overheating, then this product will most likely work. No overheating at an idle for 45 minutes MEANS that the head gasket leak is still small enough to be filled by this liquid glass. Shake the container for 30 seconds, put the liquid in your COOLANT system, drive for an hour (or other words, operate at normal temperature, especially if its an aluminum block with cast iron heads), and then let it sit for 24-48 hours (the longest time is better). This sitting time allows the liquid glass to harden completely through. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also). But buy this and try it even if your vehicle fails the 45 minute test after 10 minutes. Sometimes, it will still seal the leak, or at least slow it down. Also, you can add this once a month for three months, and maybe that will work also (this gives you a month to see how the car performs under various conditions, and for the reason I just mentioned above). If you need the car to last for just a short while (month to six months) this can be a quick fix to hold you over until you can sell the car (under buyer be where conditions) or get it to the shop when you have the money. $15 and a few minutes of your time OR the mechanic, you have to decide. Good luck. I'm a retired mechanic with two degrees in Diesel mechanics and I ran a shop for a year.... :) |

Permanent Coolant Leak Repair with K-Seal
Coolant leaks don’t have to result in costly repair bills – simply add K-Seal to your coolant system for a quick and permanent fix. K-Seal is trusted by millions of customers worldwide, and the only coolant leak repair fluid carried by the AA, the UK’s largest roadside repair company.
K-Seal couldn’t be simpler to use. K-Seal’s unique formula will seek out holes and cracks, and permanently seal them, with no adverse impact on the efficiency of your engine cooling.
Coolant System Sealer
Once the crack or hole has been located, the microfibers instantly begin to mesh together within the gap, building a seal literally fiber by fiber to stop the coolant leaking through the gap.
The particles in our K-Seal products are very precisely designed to be large enough to repair holes up to 0.635mm in size but deliberately small enough to never block any passageways or tubes within the cooling system, including those inside the heater core and radiator.
Once the microfibers have sealed and fixed the leak, a combination of exposure to either the external atmosphere or the gases within the combustion chamber and the heat within the cooling system and engine causes the K-Seal formula to cure. This results in an extremely strong and permanent seal able to withstand even the high pressures from the combustion chamber. This is how K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurized exhaust gases entering the system
Common Coolant Leaks
K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do I need to flush the cooling system before using this product if I had used bar’s tablet? I am choosing between these two since the leak is small |
Answer: | You do not have to flush the system, in fact you may flush it after to put in the Bars Leak and run for a couple hundred miles to make sure your leak is sealed. |
Question: | will this work on the head also |
Answer: | Try it...it's inexpensive. Whether it works depends on the specifics of your problem. I tried it on a 4 cylinder BMW with a new head and profile gasket and a slow leak. It worked great. |
Question: | can it be used in a Tahoe plastic tank |
Answer: | i used it in my volvo which has a plastic expansion tank and no problems. it won't fix big leaks but if you're losing just a little coolant over time and can't find the leak this is the stuff to use! |
Question: | My radiator leaking from the seam. Slightly overheating. Will this seal at the seam |
Answer: | It should, depending on how big the leak/crack is,the one on my semi truck was dripping big, half a gallon a day,I was worried bc that s a $2,000.00 repair,I bought it not expecting any results, since I had previously used Bars leak (the small silver bottle) and didn t work,so this was a prayer and a last hope, 5,000 mls later and not a leak, not extra coolant added,it is liquid aluminum,so it bonds to wherever the leak is and forms a sealing coat...I think of it as welding from the inside...I hope it works for you as it did for me,it really was an answer to prayer...I know I m a bit dramatic but it was.PS,try to follow recommended amount or as close as recommended, not much less and not much more,I used 2 bottles on a 11 gal radiator.God bless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Tried using alumaseal, which isn't working. will i need to flush the system before using the k-seal |
Answer: | I used the HD Truck bottle on my 1998 GEO Tracker ( used 1/3 of the bottle ) of K-Seal and it worked. I have used so many to no avail. To answer your question, I must have @ least 3 to 4 other sealers in my colling system when I added K-Seal. It's been almost a year & no adverse effects having not flushed my radiator. Should I have flushed the radiator & the system? Yes, I should have. |
Question: | Will this work with aluminum heads |
Answer: | It works equally well with cast iron or aluminum. Great Stuff. Not a long-term solution, but it will buy you a lot of time. |
Question: | how much do i need to pour in a diesel 1 ton cummins |
Answer: | You need this one bottle for a Dodge 3500 hd. I have this one bottle in my HD Freightliner 330hp MBZ engine hauling freight (54,000 lbs cap) 6 days a week and it stopped my coolant leak in the engine bay and heater core with no blockage and no. My opinion, Many reviews say products dont work BECAUSE most people dont take care of their equipment and their vehicles are old, high mileage and no maintenance done. None of the add to a tank products are as good as replacing with new parts but thats expensive, we get it. This may or may not fix your problem but its a low cost gamble with a high probability of success. Dont listen to the negative reviews. If the problem comes back, your damage was too far gone and in need of replacement anyway. |
Question: | Does it work on potentially warped heads |
Answer: | Probably not, but read on, and learn about all coolant leak problems if you want and how effective this product is....This bottle is enough for up to 12 cylinder engines. This will work for any type of coolant leak, if the leak is small. This will work on head gasket leaks also, read this 3 minute read on what to do if its a head gasket leak. Question: | Does this dye change the color of the antifreeze other than with a UV light? Can you see a visible color change in the coolant |
Answer: | Yes you can turn that off |
Question: | How long does it have to run through your system before you should be able to identify the leak |
Answer: | About 6 1/12 hours if that |
Question: | UV lights come in different wavelengths.Does it matter which wavelength is used with this product |
Answer: | About a half of a block if that it’s a good body camera |

There are also 3PCS radiator cap adapters and 2PCS connectors for testing the leakage of the radiator caps.
- Manual vacuum pump pressure checker uses high quality aluminium cylinder, much harder than regular plastic one. 21" long rubber hose, brass parts, anti-corrosion and durability. 3" large dials with color coded small scale range 0-35PSI, very easy to observe. Use the hand pump tester to pressurize the radiator/cap and observe whether the pointer drops over time to confirm a system leak.
- Cooling system coolant filling manifold tool adopts superior brass manifold body with plastic cover, and 18" long rubber hose, brass parts for anti-corrosion and durability. The pneumatic vacuum refiller firstly uses the workshop air to pump the cooling system and form a vacuum, and then pumps the coolant into the system. Add coolant under vacuum environment, there is no large cavitation, avoid engine warping and other damage.
- A water tank pressure leak tester and vacuum purge fill tool kit is very helpful on troubleshooting, save money and time. If there is a small leak in cooling system, or if you add coolant without vacuum, can cause many problems or even a damaged engine, this kit is much cheaper than the maintenance cost or a new engine. And normally, the tools take about 10 minutes to test leak and 5-10 minutes to refill coolant. Simple operation and save time.

Product description
"The OEMTOOLS Universal Cooling System Filler purges those problematic airlocks, checks for vacuum leaks, and then allows the technician to refill the system quickly and easily. USE IS SIMPLE: 1. Before beginning, the radiator must be completely drained of fluid. And the car should be engaged and the heater turned on, so that the heater coil is open and can be evacuated and refilled. 2. Find the right sized rubber bush for your radiator neck or coolant reservoir, and then fit the gauged cooling system adapter firmly into place. Turn the tightener on the valve clockwise until it snugly fits the radiator neck. 3. Connect venturi valve to the cooling system adapter, connect shop air to the venturi valve, and connect evacuator hose to the other side of the venture valve; make sure all valve openings are closed until the shop air is connected. 4. The hose on the other side of the venturi valve may evacuate fluid, if any is trapped in the system, so you may want to place that tube into a waste fluid pan. 5. Once the air line is attached, open the venturi valve, and the intermediate valve on the adapter assembly; Draw vacuum until the gauge reads between 50 and 60 cmHG) 6. Close the intermediate valve and venturi valve. If the vacuum drops, you have a leak in your system. If it does not, you’re ready to refill your coolant. 7. Connect your coolant hose. Drop the other end into a large container of coolant, mixed to your preferred specifications. Open the coolant tube valve, and the coolant will flow. Use a large container so that you won’t run out and introduce air to the coolant system. 8. When the gauge reaches 0 or the coolant stops flowing.
If something happens to it during normal use, it should be covered by the OEMTOOLS Limited One Year warranty. See product manual for full warranty conditions and restrictions.

User questions & answers
Question: | There was a small circular metal mesh filter gauze in the box, where does it go |
Answer: | Yes, it also works on some years of Ford Ranger . |
Question: | What exactly does "car should be engaged" mean? Also, ? if anyone else has there gage stick at 15 going up and down on gage and any fix |
Answer: | Probably the life of your engine LOL. The fluid doesn't light up by itself. You need a UV light flashlight to excite it. A cheap LED blacklight is fine. But, when I changed my water pump the antifreeze glowed easily. My water pump was leaking from the weep hole and there was a bright plume of green stain. In a darkened garage with the blacklight you would easily see any leaking antifreeze. Run in cooling system a few days then check for leaks. I put a new bottle in after replacing water pump and putting in universal long life antifreeze (Peak brand). |
Question: | What is the diameter of the plug connector? Will this fit onto a 1/4 coupler for air compressor |
Answer: | It will have an slight orange tint. BE VERY CAREFUL. This stuff dyes skin!. I recommend putting in radiator or removing hose from top of engine to pour down hose. You can add to overflow reservoir tank but it will take 2-3 days to draw into radiator. Doesn't effect anti-freeze, just glows under fluorescent black light. When my weep hole on water pump started leaking it glowed under it brightly. Works great but need 3-5 heat and cool of engine to show leaks. |
Question: | With this tool, is there a convienient way to pre-load the the filler tube with coolant so that a slug of air is not introduced in the system |
Answer: | Long enough to get the thermostat to open in warm weather it took less than 5 minutes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am not using dex-cool. i am using standard anti-freeze. can i use this product |
Answer: | It goes with the filter that goes in your coolant bucket. |
Question: | Does it have to be flushed out of system after use? If yes, do I need a cleaner or just drain and refil |
Answer: | The instructions on the web page as well as those that came with the tool are lacking in detail and clarity. At best, the description on the Amazon product page is confusing with respect to actual use of the tool. I don't know what they are intending to say with the statement "car must be engaged". This tool is the same as one sold under the Schwaben brand. The ECS Tuning website has a good, clearly written operations guide in a pdf. You can find it on their product page for the tool. Knowing Amazon has (legitimate) issues with posting links or addresses, I'll point you in the correct direction to the use instructions: www[dot]ecstuning[dot]com[forwardslash]b-schwaben-parts[forwardslash]coolant-refill-air-purge-tool[forwardslash]003466sch01. Or, you can just navigate their web site to find coolant tools. I have used this tool many times and find it speeds the process of checking for leaks and filling a cooling system when a component or hose has been replaced. Good tool overall and it does save me time. I have not noticed my gauge sticking. When air is applied to the venturi I see a smooth fall in the vacuum pressure as indicated by the gauge. Typically I will see 26-29 inHg of vacuum within a few minutes. If you have a sticky gauge, you can try to lightly tap on the front of the gauge. If it continues to stick, I would be inclined to return it for a replacement. |
Question: | Does it work on chevy malibu 2012 acdelco dex-cool coolant |
Answer: | Fits standard air compressor quick disconnect coupling. |
Question: | What is the mixing ratio of this Delco uv dye to water |
Answer: | After pulling a vacuum on the system, close the valve for the vacuum side and open the valve to the tube that is in your new coolant until the coolant is drawn up to the valve, then close the coolant valve and reopen the vacuum valve to continue evacuating the system. I will usually just pull a vacuum, fill the system then pull a vacuum again and see if the system will take more coolant. If you do this method put the air discharge hose into a container because you will get some liquid discharge when pulling the vacuum the second time. |
