Answer:	The metal housing around the outside of the bulb gets hot to the touch. The bulb remains cool. The bulb does not put out heat. I would not use it inside an aquarium or container because of the heat from the metal housing. I have mine abour 12" above the plants which are on a plant stand.

Still, it's a minor inconvenience (the need to be the timer after such an incidence); the main purpose is its use as a grow light--and that's well-worth the price!
