Answer: The life proof case 10XR does not muffle the sound I use it hands free speaker mode with the phone at least 3 feet away and people had no problem hearing me. My previous life proof cases for iPhones 4,5,6,7 also did not experience any sound problems. I will add after a couple of years the inside of the case needs to be cleaned from the dirt lint build up around speaker and mic access holes. Hope this helps.
