Answer:	There are plastic covers on the rubber blade. They are a bright yellow colored plastic, which I doubt would scratch the glass. The grit on the glass is what does the scratching. I doubt they would clear the windshield well, so you'd notice something was wrong right away. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but I would think RainX would indicate that you need to remove the covers.
