Answer:	That's the way I'm using it. When you apply 12 volts the end with the acorn nut moves outward. However, you must leave a small space (3mm or so) between the nut and what you're pushing so that the rod can start moving before it meets any resistance otherwise it won't push anything!

Answer:	I'm not sure about your question. The voltage and current applied to to the solenoid has a direct relationship to how fast and how strong the solenoid acts. We got shut down by COVID, so we never measured the maximum current load, and never applied a voltage above 12vdc.

Answer:	You have not given enough information. Will this be operated manually with a switch or automatically with a microcontroller? Does the door swing open/closed or will it slide open/closed? Is the door mounted vertically or horizontally with respect to the flow of feed that it is controlling? Will the weight of the feed be on the door when it is closed? The specifications show 160 grams(5.76 ounces) of force continuous and 400 grams(14.12 ounces) of force intermittent. Remember, a solenoid is a one-way device. If you energize the solenoid to open the door, then the spring that you see on the solenoid would have to close the door. The stroke is listed at 1.38 inches. That would not be long enough to fully open/close a 2 inch hole without some additional lever/linkage involved. If it is a sliding door, you might consider a small reversible DC motor and leadscrew/threaded rod arrangement that would drive the door open and closed although this would be slower than a solenoid. If the door is vertical with respect to the feed that is being controlled, another alternative might be a small DC motor driving a small auger to push feed through a flexible flap(pellet stoves use something like this to feed pellets). In summary, based on the information available I don't think this solenoid will work for your application. Good luck with your project.

Answer:	You would need a wire tracking device to start at the controller and trace the hot wire for that valve. These devices cost more than $950.00 for a low end one.

Answer:	No you can't. This solenoid fits Hunter valves ONLY, and doesn’t fit on any other valve. Also, although Rainbird does make several different solenoids, they too are specific to Rainbird valves. With regard to Rainbird there are a few exceptions with their DC TBOS product, but by in large Rainbird is for Rainbird Hunter is for Hunter.

Solenoids are basically electromagnets: they are made of a big coil of copper wire with an armature in the middle. When the coil is energized, the slug is pulled into the center of the coil. This makes the solenoid able to pull or push.

This solenoid in particular is nice and strong, with a 40mm long body and a captive armature with a return spring. This means that when activated with up to 12VDC, the solenoid moves and then the voltage is removed it springs back to the original position, which is quite handy. Many lower cost solenoids are only push type or only pull type and may not have a captive armature or do not have a return spring. This solenoid has 4xM3 metric threaded holes in the bottom for easy mounting.

To drive a solenoid you will need a power transistor and a diode, check this diagram for how to wire it to an Arduino or other microcontroller. You will need a fairly good power supply to drive a solenoid, as a lot of current will rush into the solenoid to charge up the electro-magnet, about 250mA, so don't try to power it with a 9V battery. Works best with a 12V power supply.
