Visually inspect spark plugs for signs of wear. Follow these steps for removing spark plugs for inspection, servicing or replacement:

Grasp the spark plug boot and gently rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise. Pull the spark plug boot and cable away from the spark plug. If necessary, use a spark plug boot removing tool. DO NOT grab or violently pull spark plug cables.

Brush or air blast dirt away from the well areas before removing spark plugs. CAUTION: Use goggles to protect eyes from debris when applying compressed air to spark plug wells.

Use the correct deep socket size to loosen each spark plug one or two turns. NOTE: To remove spark plugs from aluminum heads, allow the engine to cool. The heat of the engine, in combination with a spark plug that is still hot, may cause the spark plug threads to strip the cylinder head upon removal.

Remove each spark plug and place each one in a tray by cylinder number. This will help identify and relate any unusual condition to the cylinder involved.

Apply dielectric grease into the boot area to reduce the chance of exterior tracking on the buttress tower of the spark plug. This grease also promotes a good heat transfer between the spark terminal screw and boot terminal.

Before installing new spark plugs, use a gap guide to make sure your new spark plugs have the correct gap. NOTE: ACDelco Professional Iridium Spark Plugs are pre-gapped during manufacturing. Never attempt to gap an ACDelco Professional Iridium Spark Plug. You could damage the spark plug. Replace any incorrectly gapped ACDelco Professional Iridium Spark Plugs with plugs that are correctly gapped.

Install spark plugs or glow plugs to the proper torque per the manufacturers’ specification.

Is there a recommended interval for changing my vehicle’s spark plugs?

Yes, this interval depends on what type of spark plug your vehicle requires. Refer to your owner’s manual or contact your vehicle’s manufacturer for more information.

Should I change all of my vehicle’s spark plugs at the same time?

Yes, if it is the scheduled time for spark plug replacement. It is okay to replace one spark plug if it is fouled or damaged prior to scheduled maintenance, provided the source of the damage is found and corrected.

Does a diesel engine require a different type of plug than a gas engine?

Yes. Diesel engines require glow plugs because diesel engines operate differently than gas engines. Not always, but you should inspect your spark plug wires for wear when replacing your spark plugs. Refer to your vehicle owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer for more information.

What is pre-ignition and can it damage my engine?

Yes, pre-ignition can cause serious damage to your engine. Pre-ignition is the ignition of fuel before the actual spark occurs, which causes a rapid temperature rise in the combustion chamber that can damage engine components and melt spark plug electrodes. Causes of pre-ignition include but are not limited to a buildup of deposits that can become incandescent in the combustion chamber, improper installation torque being applied to spark plugs, and having spark plugs with a heat range that is too hot for the engine’s operating condition.

Can I just clean my spark plugs instead of replacing them?

No, cleaning your old spark plugs is not recommended. Dirty, fouled spark plugs may also have broken or chipped insulator tips, worn electrodes, or worn or missing side wires. These conditions severely affect spark plug performance. Replace your dirty, fouled spark plugs with new ACDelco spark plugs.

I went ahead and gapped them at 0.060 as suggested by the owners manual, I didn't noticed an improvement in acceleration or MPG. I have now learned that GM now recommends the Iridium spark plugs gapped at 0.040 for my SUV which is way different than what it originally came with. ***Notice: The spark plug gap is set during manufacturing and should not be changed or damage to the spark plug may result. Any new spark plug found to not be properly gapped should not be used. ***

Answer:	Iridium is a harder metal than platinum. With the harder metal, the iridium plug will last longer but with that comes a down side. The metal is not the best heat conductor. The best being Silver, then copper, then platinum, iridium and finally nickle. Your best bet is to stay with what the manufacturer recommends. Then again, if you have a vehicle that changing the plugs is a nightmare, it may be a good idea to go with a plug that will last upwards 100,000 miles. If you change your plugs every 15,000 or 20,000, then copper might be a great option as well.

Answer:	In my experience, I replace the spark plugs about every 60000 miles, but most manufacturers would recommend that spark plugs be replaced every 20000 miles. This will depend on driving conditions. No matter which brand or type spark plug you get, you should be replacing at the manufacturer's recommended intervals. One of the reasons what makes these spark plugs better than most, is the consistency of the spark over the life of the spark plug. And in my opinion, better reliability and less chance of failure.

Answer:	I received my NGK plugs with a .042 gap. My Toyota Corolla Owners manual say's .043 for a gap setting. Advance AutoParts.com has post for this plug a gap setting of .044. Since the settings were not correct and technically the plugs should have came with the correct gap Amazon made good on the purchase. So now I need to possibly reorder. Ebay has these plugs, 4 for 14.99. Maybe that's why.

Counterfeit plugs have the lettering closer to the top. Google counterfeit NGK plugs for pictures. Measure the resistance with an ohm meter. All plugs should be really close to 5000 ohms. Look for a small circular disc welded onto the inside of the ground electrode. This is platinum on a genuine plug. Counterfeit plugs dont have the disc. Check the gap. Genuine plugs come pre-gapped. Counterfeit plugs all have different gap measurements.
