14 best paint for exhaust manifold

Painting an exhaust manifold is a common automotive modification that can provide both aesthetic and functional benefits. Here's what you need to know about paint for exhaust manifolds:

  1. Heat Resistance: Exhaust manifolds become extremely hot during engine operation, so it's essential to use high-temperature paint designed to withstand the intense heat generated by the exhaust system. These paints are often rated for temperatures well above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (538 degrees Celsius) to ensure they don't peel, flake, or discolor under extreme heat.

  2. Paint Types: High-temperature exhaust manifold paints are typically available in various forms, including aerosol spray cans and brush-on formulations. The choice between the two depends on your preference and the ease of application for your specific exhaust manifold.

  3. Surface Preparation: Before applying paint, it's crucial to prepare the surface of the exhaust manifold properly. This involves cleaning the manifold thoroughly to remove dirt, grease, and rust. You may also need to use high-temperature primer to ensure proper adhesion of the paint.

  4. Application: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific high-temperature paint you choose. Ensure that the exhaust manifold is completely cool before applying the paint. Apply thin, even coats and allow sufficient drying time between coats. Multiple coats may be necessary to achieve the desired finish.

  5. Color Options: High-temperature paints for exhaust manifolds come in various colors, including black, silver, and metallic finishes. The color you choose is a matter of personal preference, but black is a popular choice because it can hide stains and discoloration caused by heat.

  6. Aesthetic Benefits: Painting an exhaust manifold can improve the appearance of your engine bay. It can give the manifold a fresh, clean look and make it stand out, especially if you opt for a metallic or chrome finish.

  7. Functional Benefits: Beyond aesthetics, high-temperature paint can help protect the exhaust manifold from corrosion and rust, which can extend its lifespan. Additionally, it may help with heat dissipation, preventing excessive heat buildup in the engine bay.

  8. Maintenance: Over time, the paint on an exhaust manifold may wear off or become discolored due to the extreme heat. Periodic touch-ups or recoating may be necessary to maintain the desired appearance and protection.

  9. Safety: It's essential to prioritize safety when working with exhaust manifolds. Wear appropriate protective gear, work in a well-ventilated area, and follow safety guidelines to avoid burns or inhalation of fumes.

In conclusion, high-temperature paint for exhaust manifolds is designed to withstand the extreme heat generated by the exhaust system. Proper surface preparation and application techniques are essential to ensure a durable and attractive finish. Painting an exhaust manifold can offer both aesthetic and functional benefits, but it's crucial to use the right type of paint and follow safety precautions during the process.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use this on a wood burning fireplace firebox
Answer: Yes especially if it is an alloy box but if the box is made of wood you might want to seal and prime it with the high temperature primer first and make sure that there are no cracks before you go over it with the rust oleum high temp paint, for best results!
Question: Can I use this paint to spray the outside of a wood burning stove
Answer: I bought 6 cabs and did my gas grill inside and out. After it cured, I ran it for 30 minutes without food. I have a "holder" to grill fish so I am using that for all cooking so I and not cooking directly on the painted area. If after a month it holds up, I will do test cooking on it directly for the stray cats.
Question: Paint scratches off very easily 2 days later, even after curing at 200 and 400 degrees. Prepped with degreaser and 150 grit sandpaper. What could I have done wrong
Answer: You did not do anything wrong. This particular paint is not durable at all, but it withstands very very high temps. If you need high heat AND durability, then you need to look into some of the high heat Cerakote and Duracoat products, which are much more involved in applying than this is. I just answered another question on here, and in that answer I mentioned watching YouTube vids of ppl using this paint. In this vids, you'll see they are very delicate w the painted objects after cured when re-installing the object in a car engine compartment, for example. The ONLY thing this paint is good at is withstanding very high heat and being applied relatively easily and cheaply. Ps. I guess I should mention that this product is sometimes sold as an "enamel" but this particular paint is not truly what you'd call an enamel. Enamel implies high durability, and this does not have high durability.
Question: What temperatures are required to cure the paint multiple times at various temperatures in an oven? Will the final coating survive any contact with food
Answer: 24 hours AFTER painted - place in oven one hour @ 175 degrees. A second curing a few hours later is sometimes helpful.Any contact with food in either direction is bad. (part to food / food to part)Make sure wife is out of town.Cook 2 or 3 pizzas one after another to help disguise smell.

Question: What temperature is required for curing,I want to use this on Harley davidson clyinders they don't get as hot as an exhaust pipe
Answer: You can idle the vehicle for 15 minutes and that will cure the paint
Question: Infiniti qx50 2014. Has universal exhaust system rust. Wii this adhere to the already rusted exhaust components? Some sanding was done
Answer: I have a 2015 Q50 hybrid Sport and I have the same problem, rust all over the exhaust system, and this was a California car. I am going to try to use Rust-Oleum rust reformer which turns rust black and then you can paint over it. I want to try it in a few spots and see how well it holds up to the heat of the exhaust system and if it looks good after week or so I'm going to go ahead and paint over the Rust-Oleum rust reformer with this product. I will post an update hear when available.
Question: Could I use this on a wood stove
Answer: I can’t see why not. Though I expect it might look slightly discolored if it gets terribly hot. Should perform better than high temp spray paint at any rate. Be sure to ventilate the space the first few times you use the stove. This paint uses heat to cure.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it need a primer for bad chrome exhaust headers on a motorcycle
Answer: I didnt use primer because I I bought a wrecked (Bassani RR) pipe and just needed to cover the damage. Rust has started to show through after a year, so I used CLR and touched it up. If I did it again I would sand better and use VHT Flame Proof primer, ceramic, and clear. VHT Flame Proof withstands higher temps. But I wasn't painting chrome... you'll need all the help you can get (sanding, primer) for it to stick.
Question: Is alot smoke normal on first start
Answer: Yes, this is normal.
Question: How is the finish after curing
Answer: This product gives a Satin Black finish.
Question: can you use this to paint exhaust pipes /mufflers
Answer: You should be fine. It holds up pretty well with higher temps.

  • Curing time required and can be done on or off vehicle
  • Headers, Exhaust Systems, Piston Domes, Inside Heads

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone sprayed a fire pit yet? Curious how well it handles direct flame and if it would still be safe for smores and things
Answer: It will burn off
Question: can you use this to coat steel rods and use a cooking surface
Answer: If you mean to coat something to cook food on, I would certainly not recommend that. This paint spays better than any spray paint I have used but I am sure that VHT would not recommend contact with food, especially at high temperature. I would not recommend using any paint to cook food on.
Question: How long can VHT102 paint be on surface before curing process starts
Answer: None of these answers are accurate. VHT Flame-proof paints require the user to cure the paint by applying heat in a baking style. If you are applying the paint to an object that you've removed from the vehicle: (1) Let paint dry completely. (2) Heat to 250°F for 30 minutes. (3) Cool for 30 minutes. (4) Heat to 400°F for 30 minutes. (5) Cool for 30 minutes. (6) Heat to 650°F for 30 minutes. If you can't fit the part that you're painting in the oven, then you'll have to put it back on the vehicle and follow the instructions for curing the paint while on your vehicle: (1) Let paint dry completely. (2) Run at idle for 10 minutes. (3) Cool for 20 minutes. (4) Run at idle for 20 minutes. (5) Cool for 20 minutes. (6) Run under normal operating conditions for 30 minutes. And there you go. Details come straight from VHT website: http://www.vhtpaint.com/high-heat/vht-flameproof-coating
Question: Would a engine with a bad motor mount or two affect the curing process
Answer: Unless your motor mounts are extremely bad I.E. your whole engine shakes around like an unbalanced washing machine, then it should not affect the curing process. If they are in fact that bad, then you should probably fix that before applying wet paint and attempting to cure it with a massive vibrator.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this adhere to chrome motorcycle exhaust pipes
Answer: No! will not stick to chrome..best bet is a Jet Hot Coating from a powder coater.. This stuff does not hold up well under high heat conditions, will flake off at the hot bends of pipes
Question: For inside tubing on exaust manifold, is primer application sufficient for protection without , color, VHT paint coatings
Answer: I think it is. I have used this primer ONLY on the exhaust of one of our cars. Curing is tricky. Have to follow istructions on the primer can.
Question: Can I use this on a firepit to prevent rust
Answer: Yes but any paint will do that as long as you clean the rust off . All your doing is keeping the water and air from getting to the raw metal . The high tempPaint has to be bake in an oven to 600*F
Question: can this be used for arts and crafts to and not just cars
Answer: I don't see why you couldn't use this for other applications but if your not going to be heating your crafts to over 1000* why would you need a high heat clear coat.

Why Do Original Exhaust Manifolds Fail?

Exhaust manifolds carry exhaust gases from the engine to the exhaust system, and therefore have to withstand extreme temperatures. This will wear on any part, but poor design and inferior materials will cause these parts to fail faster.

As exahust manifolds wear out, they can crack and leak. As a result, the engine may become noisier, vehicle performance may suffer, and other parts may start failing as well if exposed to intense heat escaping from the cracked manifold.

Why Are Dorman Exhaust Manifolds Better?

- High-quality metal construction protects against warping or cracking.

- Leak-resistant designs provide long-lasting performance.

- Detailed inspections ensure product standards.
