13 best aftermarket catalytic converters
Aftermarket catalytic converters are replacement components for a vehicle's exhaust system that serve the same function as original equipment manufacturer (OEM) catalytic converters. These devices are crucial in reducing harmful exhaust emissions, particularly pollutants like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to air pollution and environmental damage.
Here are some key aspects related to aftermarket catalytic converters:
Function and Purpose:
- Catalytic converters are designed to convert harmful gases produced during the combustion process into less harmful substances through chemical reactions. They play a crucial role in reducing air pollution and ensuring compliance with emissions standards.
Materials and Construction:
- Aftermarket catalytic converters are typically made of similar materials to OEM converters, such as ceramic or metallic substrates coated with precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals facilitate the catalytic reactions that convert harmful gases into less harmful ones.
Replacement Parts:
- Aftermarket catalytic converters are used as replacements for damaged, worn-out, or malfunctioning OEM converters. They are designed to be compatible with specific vehicle makes and models, making them a popular choice for vehicle owners looking for cost-effective replacement options.
Compliance and Regulations:
- Aftermarket catalytic converters are required to meet local emissions regulations and standards to ensure they effectively reduce harmful emissions. Manufacturers of aftermarket converters strive to comply with these regulations to provide reliable and legal replacement options.
Installation and Compatibility:
- Installation of aftermarket catalytic converters should be performed by qualified technicians to ensure proper fit and functionality. It's essential to select a catalytic converter that is compatible with the vehicle's make, model, year, and engine specifications.
Cost and Affordability:
- Aftermarket catalytic converters are often more affordable than OEM converters, making them an attractive option for cost-conscious vehicle owners. However, it's crucial to balance cost with quality and compliance to ensure effective emissions control.
Performance and Warranty:
- Reputable aftermarket catalytic converter manufacturers provide products that maintain or even improve the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency. Additionally, they may offer warranties to provide consumers with confidence in their purchase.
Environmental Impact:
- Properly functioning aftermarket catalytic converters contribute to a reduction in air pollution and help protect the environment by converting harmful exhaust emissions into less harmful compounds.
Vehicle owners should consider factors such as compatibility, compliance with emissions standards, warranty, and reputable manufacturers when selecting an aftermarket catalytic converter for their vehicles. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of catalytic converters are essential for both vehicle performance and environmental preservation.

Please pay attention during usage:
1. Do not use leaded gasoline.
2. Do not run fast for a long time (open-loop control state).
3. Do not allow the engine speed to change quickly.
4. The ignition time should not be too late.
5. It won't start for a long time.
6. Do not pull out the high-voltage line for a long time to test.
7. When measuring the cylinder pressure, unplug the central control connector of the fuel pump, so that the injector can stop the injection of fuel into the cylinder.
8. When it is found that the cylinder is not working properly, it should be stopped in time for inspection and troubleshooting.
9. Avoid factors to a rich mixture, such as inadequate closing of the fuel injector, failure of the fuel pressure regulator, failure of the oxygen sensor, and failure of the air flow sensor
10. As long as the catalytic converter is used correctly, it generally does not require maintenance, so do not disassemble it casually. If it needs to be replaced, it must be matched with the engine.
Catalytic converter structure
Catalytic converter composed of shell, shock-absorbing layer, substrate, carrier, and catalyst.
The substrate material of the catalyst is mainly honeycomb ceramics, the structure increased the effective contact area with the exhaust gas to the most. Ceramics provide strength with lower density, the resistance of high temperature, small coefficient of thermal expansion, etc.
The carrier coating is usually Alumina (Al2O3), which compatibility both well with ceramics and catalyst, and provide good specific surface area and thermal stability.
And the precious metal catalyst is Rh, Pt, Pd. (Platinum Group Metals)
Conversion efficiency with A/F (Air-Fire ratio) and T(temperature)
Only at the ideal air-fuel ratio (A/F 14.7:1), the conversion efficiency of these three pollutants will be relatively highest at the same time.
And the temperature is extremely important for a catalyst too, in order to maximize the efficiency of the converter reaction.
Usually, the best temperature range is 400-800℃.
The Light-Off Temperature is 250℃, between 250-400℃, the conversion efficiency would drop sharply.
And beyond 800℃, the precious metal catalyst would be aging rapidly.
The common causes of failure
The temperature is too high. when exceeds 1000 ℃, the catalyst in its inner layer will sinter and die, even fires.
Chronic poisoning. S, Pb, P, Zn and their formation of oxide particles after combustion in the engine are easy to be adsorbed on the catalyst.
Surface-area carbon. The soot emitted by the engine would adhere to the surface of the catalyst.
Exhaust deterioration. aging or overuse leads to failure.
Differential use. The installation and application should be strictly matched according to the engine model.
Oxygen sensing failure. Ensure the oxygen sensor is working properly to achieve the best Air-Fire ratio, Oxygen sensing failure would cause lots of problems.
About the Code P0420/P4030
This catalytic converter can eliminate the check engine light on caused by code P0420 - catalyst system efficiency below threshold.
Therefore, before replacing a catalytic converter, please make sure your O2 sensors still work well. Faulty sensors can cause Oxygen sensor carbon deposition, ceramic chipping, heater resistance wire burnout, internal circuit disconnection, and damage to your fuel economy as well as the service life of the converter.

WALKER CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
Walker offers catalytic converters manufactured with a stainless-steel body, aluminized pipe and heat shields, that provide you peace-of-mind with assured compliance by engineers who set the standard. Whether it’s universal or direct-fit, catalytic converters feature an optimal high-technology washcoat and OE-design precious metal load that deliver required reduction in tailpipe emissions to match vehicle application.
FIVE CHECKS BEFORE REPLACING A CATALYTIC CONVERTER
Converters don’t fail on their own, complete these five checks before replacing a catalytic converter:
- Retrieve / repair all PCM trouble codes, check for any available TSBs or PCM re-flash updates
- Repair all exhaust leaks
- Make sure vehicle is in proper fuel control
- Always check for internal coolant leaks and excessive oil consumption
- Make sure you have the right part for the application
WHY A CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILS
Converters don’t fail on their own; failure is usually a symptom of a larger problem. This is why it is important to identify the root cause of the failure and perform the repair prior to installing a new converter. Most catalytic converter failures fall under one of three categories:
- Overheated, melted or broken converters
- Coated/oil-fouled substrate
- Structural damage
DIRECT-FIT VS. UNIVERSAL CONVERTERS
Walker universal fit catalytic converters have a customizable design with expandable bushings to adapt to connector pipes based on the repair. They may require specialized fabrication and welding for installation. Walker pre-bent routings hangers and flanges for OE-style direct-fit catalytic converters attach to the exhaust system for a direct-fit bolt-off, bolt-on solution. No matter what you select, all converters must meet the emission requirements of the vehicle and cannot be chosen by size alone.
WHAT TO DO IF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON?
Troubleshoot an illuminated check engine light by making sure the gas and oil caps are on tight and that the oil dipstick is seated correctly. If the light remains lit, it could be triggered by a faulty oxygen sensor, failing catalytic converter, bad spark plugs, malfunctioning thermostat or bad mass air flow sensor. If the light remains on, make sure to make an appointment with your service provider as soon as possible.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EPA AND CARB CONVERTERS
EPA-compliant catalytic converters are for use on EPA or Federal emissions certified-vehicles. EPA-compliant catalytic converters cannot be sold or installed in California and Colorado and in certain circumstances in Maine and New York. In those states, you must install a CARB-compliant catalytic converter on CARB emissions certified vehicles in the states of California and Colorado, on all vehicles. CARB-compliant converters contain more catalyst material in order to converter emissions more efficiently and comply with stricter emissions reduction requirements. Check the vehicle’s emissions control information label and consult your state’s aftermarket converter regulations to select the right catalytic converter.
