13 best electric trailer brakes

Electric trailer brakes are an essential component of a trailer's braking system. They play a crucial role in improving safety and control when towing a trailer behind a vehicle. Here's what you need to know about electric trailer brakes in the context of brake systems, replacement parts, and the automotive industry:

  1. Function: Electric trailer brakes are designed to assist the towing vehicle in slowing down or stopping the trailer when the vehicle's brakes are applied. They work in tandem with the vehicle's brakes to provide controlled and synchronized braking for both the towing vehicle and the trailer.

  2. Components: Electric trailer brake systems typically consist of several key components, including brake shoes or pads, magnets, a brake controller, wiring, and a brake drum or rotor. When the driver applies the brakes in the towing vehicle, an electrical signal is sent to the trailer's brakes, activating them.

  3. Types of Electric Trailer Brakes:

    • Electric Drum Brakes: These are the most common type of electric trailer brakes. They use electromagnetic force to engage the brake shoes against the brake drum, creating friction and slowing down the trailer.
    • Electric Disc Brakes: Less common but gaining popularity, electric disc brakes use a similar principle but with a disc rotor instead of a drum. They are known for their superior stopping power and reduced maintenance.
  4. Brake Controller: The brake controller is a critical component of the electric trailer brake system. It is installed in the towing vehicle and allows the driver to adjust the intensity of the trailer's brakes. Modern brake controllers often have features like proportional braking, which provides smoother and more effective braking.

  5. Replacement Parts: Like any automotive component, electric trailer brakes may require replacement parts over time due to wear and tear. Common replacement parts include brake shoes or pads, magnets, wiring, and the brake controller itself. It's essential to use high-quality replacement parts to ensure safe and reliable trailer braking.

  6. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the proper functioning of electric trailer brakes. This includes inspecting the brake components, adjusting the brakes, and ensuring that the electrical connections are secure and free from corrosion.

  7. Safety Considerations: Properly functioning electric trailer brakes enhance towing safety by reducing the risk of trailer sway and providing more controlled stops, especially when towing heavy loads. It's essential to adhere to recommended weight limits and ensure that the trailer's brakes are appropriately sized for the load being towed.

  8. Legal Requirements: In many regions, the use of electric trailer brakes is subject to legal requirements, particularly when towing heavier trailers. Compliance with local regulations and standards is essential to ensure road safety and avoid potential fines.

Electric trailer brakes are a valuable addition to any trailer, improving safety and control during towing. Regular inspection, maintenance, and the use of high-quality replacement parts are essential to ensure their proper functioning.

Question: My trailer bolt pattern is 5 on 5. Will this work
Answer: Not positive, but believe they were.
Question: hello , is this model self adjusting
Answer: There could be a dozen reasons for this? Assuming everything worked correctly before the install? The brakes may take a few trips “around the block” to expand to the point where they are grabbing sufficiently. You could jack up one side of the trailer axle and have someone apply the brakes in vehicle and see if it is grabbing the trailer wheel?
Question: Whats the center bore on these. I want to use bearing buddy. Will they fit
Answer: Yes they work on my escourt trailer with dual wheel (4) for my bayliner 2352 capri

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt
Answer: The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only.
Question: According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time
Answer: You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin.
Question: do the brakes engage when backing up
Answer: Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind.
Question: does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system
Answer: No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine.

User questions & answers

Question: Will a standard Bearing buddy (1.98") work with these
Answer: If you need 2 inch brakes there the same. Not sure about the part number
Question: Do these come with the backing plate mounting hardware or what size nuts and bolts are needed
Answer: Yes. The assemblies are available on Amazon or etrailer dot com, but etrailer is more expensive.
Question: Will this fit AL-KO axles
Answer: The trailer brakes are NOT self adjusting, unlike most drum brakes on cars and trucks. There is however some "give" with an electric braking system on trailers. The adjustment is pretty simple and need to be done when installed and periodically thereafter. To Adjust: the bottom side of the drum brakes between the brake shoes you should see the "Adjuster" with a spring between the two shoes- This screwed wheel is your adjuster. It will need to be manually adjusted on install- to do that remove the rubber plug on the back side of the Backing plate and using a large flat tip screw driver or brake show adjuster tool and rotate while spinning the Drum until it stops the drum. Then Back the adjuster off just a little until the drum spins easily again. Replace the rubber plug. Do this for all Electric Brake units.
Question: Will this fit a Tractor Supply Company 3500lb axle
Answer: My axle was a 12” hub by 2” wide brake pads. The brake housing has a center hole that you need to measure along with how many nuts that it takes to mount. Mine took 5 some take 4. As you look for the new brake assembly you will need to know the details to make sure you get the correct brake assembly. Hope that helps you.

User questions & answers

Question: Will these fit the 42mm nev r lube axles
Answer: You will need to match your bearing numbers and make sure you have a four hole brake flange. The bolt circle is measured from center of stud to the next center of stud 4.5" = 2 5/8".
Question: What is the inside hole diameter
Answer: This a 4.5" bolt circle, there is a 5" bolt circle kit available. If you have a 4.5" bolt circle wheel it will work.
Question: What is the center hole diameter? Can the backing plate be welded onto the axle
Answer: This kit is not self adjusting, but we do have this option available.
Question: will this work on homemade utility trailer with dexter mobile home axles and brakes
Answer: The bearing buddy will be 1.980". If you use these pressure greasers, you will need to install the inner grease seal backwards or can blow the seal out. allowing water and dirt (mud) to enter the bearing case or cause grease to enter brake shoe compartment. The best thing to do is "Maintenance". Once a year inspect your brake shoes and drums, then regrease your bearings. Short cuts almost always cause more work and cost more money. Grease on brake parts means new brake parts are in your future..

User questions & answers

Question: Are yhis self adjusting
Answer: These are for a 7000 # axle it depends on what size axle you have and brake drums
Question: it says these replace kelsey hays 12x2 five hole will it bolt up to the same flange or does it need a dextor flange
Answer: It's mild steel. I guess you could weld it on. It comes with pre drilled holes so you could perhaps drill your flange on the axle. Or if the backing plate is the same you could swap over the assembly
Question: I have a 12" 5-hole Dexter single axle/wheel system on a 10'x77" trailer. Will this brake assembly fit or must I find a smaller diameter assembly
Answer: Not sure what the A6 crosses to, but this hub drum will replace a drum using an outer bearing using LM67048 or 15123 and an inner bearing 25580. This is considered the heavy duty version.
Question: I have an older mobile home axle with a welded on brake assembly which I can grind off. Can I weld these brake assemblies on to the axle shaft
Answer: You can, but I wouldn’t, unless you want grease leaking out and getting on the brake shoes.
