12 best automotive sound deadeners
Automotive sound deadeners are materials and components used in vehicles to reduce noise, vibrations, and harshness (NVH) levels, thereby enhancing the overall driving experience and comfort for occupants. These materials are commonly employed in various parts of a vehicle, including the body, body trim, and replacement parts. Here is some information about automotive sound deadeners:
Purpose: The primary purpose of automotive sound deadeners is to reduce or dampen the noise and vibrations generated by the vehicle's engine, road, wind, and other sources. This improves the interior acoustics and minimizes the intrusion of unwanted noise.
Types of Materials: There are various materials used as sound deadeners in automobiles, including but not limited to:
- Acoustic Insulation: These materials are designed to block and absorb sound waves. Common options include foam, rubber, and mass-loaded vinyl.
- Vibration Dampeners: These materials reduce vibrations in vehicle panels and structures. They are often made of butyl rubber or asphalt-based compounds.
- Sound Absorbers: These materials are used to absorb sound energy rather than reflecting it. They typically have porous structures and can be found in headliners, door panels, and carpet padding.
- Sealing and Barrier Materials: These materials create a barrier to prevent sound transmission. Examples include automotive-grade foils and barriers.
Application Areas:
- Body Panels: Sound deadeners are applied to various body panels, such as doors, floors, and the firewall, to reduce road noise and vibrations.
- Body Trim: Inside the vehicle's cabin, sound deadening materials can be found in the headliner, door panels, and carpeting to enhance the acoustic comfort.
- Replacement Parts: Sound deadeners are also used in aftermarket parts to maintain or improve NVH characteristics when replacing original components.
Benefits:
- Reduced Noise: Automotive sound deadeners significantly reduce the noise level inside the vehicle, making for a quieter and more pleasant ride.
- Enhanced Comfort: Reduced vibrations and noise contribute to a more comfortable driving experience.
- Improved Audio Quality: In addition to reducing unwanted noise, sound deadeners can enhance the quality of in-car audio systems by minimizing interference.
Installation and Maintenance: Sound deadeners can be installed during the manufacturing of vehicles or as aftermarket additions.Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance. They require minimal maintenance but should be inspected for damage or deterioration over time.
Regulations and Standards: Automotive manufacturers must comply with various regulations and industry standards related to noise levels and emissions. Sound deadeners play a role in achieving these standards.
In summary, automotive sound deadeners are crucial components that help reduce noise and vibrations inside vehicles, enhancing the overall driving experience and comfort for occupants. They come in various forms and are applied to different parts of the vehicle, from body panels to interior trim, to effectively manage NVH levels.

Question: | how many boxes wil i need for a 1957 ford fairlane 500. I want to do complete floor and trunk as well as headliner doors and inside finder in trunk ar |
Answer: | Number of sheets in the stack 9Sheet Size 29x20 inchTotal coverage area of 36 sq.feetPack 36 sqft has two times more sheets in size than a pack of 18 sqft |
Question: | I have a carrier comfort apu 2 cylinder kubota diesel generator mounted to the side of my big rig approximately 95 decimals how much reduction |
Answer: | If you look to eliminate the road, engine noise and metal vibrations then Noico 80 mil material is the way to go. You are to install Noico 80 mil to such key areas, as floorboards, doors, firewall, roof, trunk + trunk lid, rear deck. We recommend to carefully prepare the metal surface before installation of deadener to it. That would include thoroughly cleaning, drying and degreasing the metal surface before installing the sound deadening to it. You are also to firmly roll down the sound deadening mats to the metal surface with aid of roller. *Ambient temperature upon installation should be not less than 60 degrees F. If a temperature is lower than 60 degrees F then you are to preheat both, metal surface and even deadening pads up to 60 degrees F. That will largely enhance an adhesion and overall effect. |
Question: | Is this enough for 1980 camaro floor? if i isolating the whole car (t tops) how many of that do i need |
Answer: | Insulating the wheel wells, floorboards, firewall and doors would certainly decrease the high pitch noise but it won't totally cancel that. It appears that the source is tyres themselves. Sound deadening works more towards low frequency resonance elimination. Please note that all of our sound deadening materials are to be installed from the interior side only. |
Question: | CHEN: Does this package come with enough to do my whole car? 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe ?How much package |
Answer: | Unfortunately Noico 80 mil wont work in this case because the noise is caused by the fan movement and it is actually a flow of air that you get to hear and it can't be remedied with this material. |

Answer: | I am not using Cooler Master, but corsair H110 (also 280mm cooler). It fits on the top, except one problem: Water pipe clearance is small and I decided to move DVD drive to external one. User questions & answers
Question: | what is the abrasion resistance of this material to be used in a trunk space |
Answer: | This material is just foam with adhesive backing. It needs something on top of it to protect it. Typically you would put mass loaded vinyl on top of it as part of a butyl, foam, vinyl sandwich for the best sound deadening and resonance control. You can also just put carpet over it. |
Question: | What is the max temp rating for this product? What could I use to insulate up to 900*F |
Answer: | Noico RED 150 mil temperature limits are from -49 degrees F to +190 degrees Fahrenheit. In your situation, you need to use special materials designed for 900-3000 degrees F. We're sorry, but we do not carry such type of materials. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i put it in the inside of my engine bay? I have a jeep yj |
Answer: | We do not recommend using this material for treatment of engine compartment except for using it as an application for the hood. The best solution would be the treatment of firewall and floor from interior side. |
Question: | I am thinking of insulating my new dewalt contractor tablesaw would this product absorb the high pitch noise |
Answer: | That's not how this product works. It adds mass to large vibrating panels. You want mass loaded vinyl with a closed cell foam decoupling layer. |
Question: | Is this only for sound or could it be used as a heat barrier for under the hood |
Answer: | Noico 80 mil is first of all sound and vibro insulation, it is also a heat barrier but to a much lesser extent.Specifically for heat insulation we recommend using special materials such as Dynamat Hood Liner or Noico Liner. User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used under a vehicle by the muffler |
Answer: | We're sorry, but none of our products can be used outside the vehicle or close to the heat source. |
Question: | Does this require additional adhesive if used between headliner and car roof |
Answer: | Kilmat 80 mil material is self adhesive, there is no need for additional adhesive to be applied to install it to the roof of a car, It's important to clean, dry and degrease a metal surface prior to installation of Kilmat 80 mil to it. Make sure to thoroughly press it down to the metal surface with a roller until the special embossment on the foil is plain and smooth. |
Question: | Can i use this in car to reduce noice coming from outside? like road sound |
Answer: | Yes, you can. Kilmat 80 mil main use is to reduce the noise, rattles and vibrations of the metal of the car. The road noises make the metal of your car resonating. Thus, installing sound deadening material will help you to reduce this resonance and make your vehicle quieter. We recommend installing the material to such key areas as: the doors; floor together with firewall, wheel arches (if you have access from the interior side of your vehicle), trunk and trunk lid; a roof. Please note that all of our materials are to be installed only from the interior side of a vehicle. No outside application is possible. For better results we also recommend covering the layer of the sound deadener with the layer of closed cell foam material for sound and thermal insulation. |
Question: | Does it help to reduce heat in the cab |
Answer: | Kilmat 80 mil sound deadening material is mainly intended to eliminate the road, engine noise and metal vibrations of a vehicle. It does possesses some thermal insulation properties but to significantly lesser extent. Its primary designation is vibration control. |
