User questions & answers
Question: | Is the yellow a darker "sunflower" yellow or a bright "daisy" yellow |
Answer: | Ignore Carlos, he's a jerk. We all know what you're asking... I'd imagine with the right prep and such, this paint would bond to plastic. |
Question: | any tips, advice or suggestions on this? worth it? results? experiences |
Answer: | Not for a rookie painter's first project. Like any superior paint project, the secret is Prep, Prep, and Prep. I cleaned with Simple Green @ 50% solution first; next, roughed up with aluminum oxide sandpaper and wire brush; then brake cleaner (2 cans for 4 calipers) for final cleaning prep. Set up a good light so that you can see what you are doing inside the fender well. I use a 500 watt halogen work light. My front calipers on both cars are large 4 piston, fixed mount, with a lot of surface area. Plan on at least two coats, there is plenty of paint in the can for 8 calipers X 2 coats, with some left over to touch up chips later. Plan your brush stroke approach ahead, work from bottom to top (gravity may cause runs). Keep the wet edge of paint moving, as the paint dries very quickly; that's why you have to plan your stroke strategy, to minimize the width of the wet edge. Don't go back to cover a thin or missed spot for at least 20-30 minutes, it will stick and pull if you do. The directions on the package are ambiguously worded.I concur with other reviewers, get a decent brush, I used both 1/2 inch and 1 inch brushes. The packaging does not specify any thinner/solvent at all. I successfully used common mineral spirits paint thinner, both to thin the paint a little (use sparingly) if the humidity is low, and to clean brushes. Use a separate cup/bowl to apply from (don't use a Styrofoam coffee cup, the paint dissolves it). Pour from the paint can to your working cup/bowl (stir each time), so that you don't contaminate the unused paint and close the lid on the source can so that the source paint's thinner doesn't evaporate. Each caliper may take you 45 minutes to apply one coat. Make yourself comfortable with a stool or kneeling pad, this becomes a marathon job to do right. Putting the car on a lift makes the job easier than using jack stands. Don't forget to use newspaper or cardboard to protect the garage floor or driveway from paint drips... the stuff is hard to get off once it sets up.I had to move the cars after the 2nd coat had dried an hour. I was very careful mounting the wheels, as the freshly painted calipers would be very tender. I traveled at under 30 mph, with minimal brake use for 2 miles to my garage for the 24 hour drying time. That avoided heat and brake dust; it had no affect on the final quality. I am pleased with my results, close to concours quality. On previous cars, I used spray paint with good results, but color not as bright and glossy. This time I decided to save masking time (a lot of time to do a thorough and careful masking job) by using this brush on product. What I saved in masking time, I lost in painting time. Once masked, spray paint goes on quickly with good coverage. Applying with a brush and minimal masking requires a steady hand in some areas. Brushing the paint on is a tedious process. Each caliper may take you 45 minutes to apply one coat. My calipers are large, 4 piston, fixed mount. Make yourself comfortable with a stool or kneeling pad, this becomes a marathon job to do right. Putting the car on a lift makes the job easier than using jack stands. Good lighting is essential while working in the fender well. I used a 500 watt halogen work light.Remain conscious of paint setup time and drying time. You have to wait at least 20-30 minutes to start the second coat, but under 1 hour to start the second coat -- or if over 1 hour, then wait 5 days for curing before starting the second coat. Start the second coat with the same brushing pattern as you used for the first coat. So that means you can only have two calipers in the painting process of multiple coats in a session. Once those two are complete and drying, take a break, then start on next two calipers. |

Materials, Tools, and Techniques
Before getting started on the 50 paintings, it is important to explore the options for tools and materials as well as to consider essential principles about color and design. This chapter will introduce you to the basics of acrylic paint, brushes, surfaces, and the equipment you will need to complete the projects illustrated in this book.
Putting on the Paint
In this chapter, you will be introduced to the primary techniques needed to paint in acrylics through a series of progressively challenging projects. You will start with basic paint application exercises and slowly add new skills with each project. By the end of the chapter, you will have acquired the fundamentals necessary for painting in acrylics.
Light, Shadow, and Form
Now that you have a better understanding of applying paint to represent flat, two-dimensional objects, it’s time to explore the ways light, shadow, and color function with three-dimensional forms. The projects in this chapter feature objects that can be represented using a small group of simplified forms: spheres, cubes, cones, and cylinders.
Interpretive Approaches
This final chapter involves applying various color themes, painting directly without layering or blending, stylistic interpretations, and more. The projects are designed to provide you with a set of tools for creating more expressive paintings. Why not apply them to earlier projects in this book to see how your painting has progressed? The artistic possibilities are infinite.
1
Mix a dull red-orange from Napthol Red and a little Cadmium Yellow Medium. Using the #4 filbert brush, paint an oval shape for the pincushion, leaving a star shape unpainted at the top. The pincushion is not a pure circle; painting it as an oval helps to make it look as if it’s squished down a little under the weight of the filling.
2
While the first layer is still wet and without cleaning the brush, go over the shape again, adding a little bit of Mars Black and Burnt Sienna to the mix as you work toward the shaded areas on the left and bottom. Slowly “feather” the colors together so that the wet paints blend on the canvas, giving a subtle gradation of tone. Don’t worry about a few irregularities—the pincushion is bound to have a few wrinkles in it.
3
Mix a dark olive green from Cadmium Yellow Medium, a little Unbleached Titanium, and a tiny amount of Mars Black. Using a #4 bright brush, paint the star shape at the top, then switch to a #1 round brush for the stripes radiating down from the star. Add a little Ultramarine Blue near the base of the stripes, for the parts that are in shadow. Pay attention to the contour—the two outside stripes curve around the form.
4
Mix a bright blue from Titanium White and Ultramarine Blue. Using a #6 flat brush, paint the background, cutting out the shape of the pincushion as you do so and leaving gaps for the pins. As they’re the same color as the primed canvas, it’s easier to leave spaces for them than to add them later—and the shape of the brush means it’s simple to make the pins absolutely straight.
5
Mix Titanium White with a little glazing medium and add a few pins to the front of the pincushion, using a #1 round brush. Paint the cast shadow under the pincushion in a mix of Ultramarine Blue, Unbleached Titanium, and Mars Black. Put in the shadows cast by the pins with a mix of Napthol Red, Cadmium Yellow Medium, and a little Burnt Sienna, making sure they follow the contour of the pincushion, just like the green stripes in step 3. Use the same mix for the shadows around the star. Finally, paint the pin heads in any colors you like.
6
The next geometric shape we’re going to look at is the sphere—a shape that’s found in a multitude of everyday objects, from fruit to soccer balls. So how do you make a sphere look as if it’s rounded and three-dimensional, rather than just a flat circle? The key is to exploit differences in value as the object curves away from the light: our eyes tell us that if part of the object is in shadow, then that part must be turned away from the light source—so we instinctively “read” it as being rounded. You will be blending colors wet into wet on the canvas rather than creating sharp, clearly defined shifts in value. The gradation is so subtle it’s almost imperceptible, and it’s worth practicing this because the fast drying time of acrylics can make it difficult to achieve. This exercise also introduces the idea of contour lines—lines that curve around the form of the object to give it depth and dimension.
Caliper Paint
Dupli-Color Caliper Paint makes customizing brake calipers easy. This durable, protective coating is resistant to chipping, brake dust, and automotive chemicals. Formulated with ceramic resins, this high-gloss coating resists temperatures up to 500°F. Caliper Paint is available in an aerosol can for applying to brake calipers when removed from your vehicle, and also in a brush-on kit for applying when your brake calipers are not removed from your vehicle.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this hold up as well to the standard duplicolor automotive spray paint that people use for painting fishing reels |
Answer: | i would say why not, its a paint, you wouldnt get same finish as normal base/clear car paint, and you wouldn't be able to use lacquer finner or stuff like that on it later. |
Question: | Would this kit work well to replace a small section carbon fiber finish on a bike frame. My concern is to have a decent blending effect |
Answer: | There is more than enough paint to do the job. Compound curved surfaces will be more difficult . |
Question: | Could you possibly spray your car hood with this |
Answer: | On my wife's 2017 Challenger GT AWD. It is a little bit lighter, than the yellow jacket yellow. Still looks really good, the wife likes it. |
Question: | Would i beable to spray paint a paintball gun with this |
Answer: | I used the BCP404 blue kit on the black Dodge RAM 1500 I use to have and it turned out great. I had the truck for over a year after I applied the paint and I saw no chipping / wear on the paint so it holds up well and it is worth it. Hints: (1) Get a lot of good brake cleaner, clean the calipers well and dry them completely before starting. (2) Open the kit and throw away the paint brush that comes with it. It's a hard bristled application brush, not a paint brush. Invest a few dollars in 2 or 3 soft bristled paint brushes for models / arts & crafts and use them. This will take the streaks out of the paint and keep it smooth. (3) If possible, let the paint dry but then also wait a day before you drive the vehicle to let it cure well before you put heat to the calipers. I think you'll love the results. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can two cans paint over 5pcs of 28inch wheels |
Answer: | Don't use this product, it sucks. Doesn't even come out close to the pic on the can. Spend the money and get them PVD coated. If you want great looking black chrome. |
Question: | Should I put a clear coat over finished product if on a car |
Answer: | It might last a bit longer with proper sanding and a clear coat. I used it on headlight trim of a Wrangler. Worked well enough as it was for that. |
Question: | Does this last |
Answer: | I've had it on my rims for the entire summer. It doesn't chip or peel as some have suggested here. The key is preparation, you've got to start off with a completely clean surface. Keep in mind that it's a lacquer paint and it needs to be buffed and compounded occasionally. My finish went "flat" after less than a month so I put a buffing wheel on my drill to buff it out and bring back the shine. This is not a maintenance-free finish like a clear coat |
Question: | How do I prevent getting paint on my tires when I paint the rims |
Answer: | Get a deck of cards and lay them horizontal with the shape of the tire/rims.Or use painters tape and newspaper and go around in the edge of the wheel. |

Question: | Is it glossy or flat finish |
Answer: | 1 can actually did but I wanted some for retouch as well. |
Question: | Is it necessary to use a clear top coat after |
Answer: | I haven’t had an issue with break fluid coming in contract with the painted calipers yet. I would assume if you leave the fluid on the paint for a period of time it would damage the finish. |
Question: | Will two bottles cover 4 calipers |
Answer: | I do not know the answer to that I bought a couple of packs and use them with there paint. That is what they recommended sorry I could not be more helpful |
Question: | does brake fluid break it down |
Answer: | If you clear coat it it should. Just fyi if you have an item with a lot of angles/curves this is difficult to use. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have honda accord 2003 gray/silver. how do i tell perfect match color |
Answer: | You probably have to verify the exact color of you vehicle and even like that if you cars paint job is a little worn out it may not be a perfect match but close enough where it may not be noticeable |
Question: | Does this work to prime plastic |
Answer: | I used it on a replacement bumper cover (plastic) and the paint worked great. Be sure to sand the plastic using a 400 to 600 grit. Use several coats and finish it off with clear coat (3-4 coats). Then sand and buff out with good quality random orbital buffer. Made a perfect match to all of surrounding paint. |
Question: | What's the advantage of using filler-primer vs bondo skim coat+primer |
Answer: | This primer is used for very thin and superficial scratches dings etc. If you have a dent that needs "build up" I'd reccomend the bondo first. Sand it down, feather it in, then used the primer in order for the paint to hold. If its a small scratch not in the metal where dents are visibly seen, then use the primer as a base, then paint over. (Hope this helps!) |
Question: | Do I need to go by my car's paint code to order this primer |
Answer: | No it's only a primer you have to paint over it!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this paint match a 1999 civic hatchback oem silver |
Answer: | The only way to be 100% sure is look up the paint code on the driver's side door jamb, as in: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/paint-codes/honda.htm |
Question: | How do you select the paint color to match your vehicle |
Answer: | Get the paint code from the car VIN tag (usually under the hood or inside driver door, and go to the Duplicolor website and look up by application. |
Question: | clover |
Answer: | I ordered 3 cans of paint, two of them were so old that no matter how long you shook them, the paint came out in globs & they were useless. I tried to RMA the paint, but Amazon told me that I couldn't ship them back because they're flamable, but I couldn't have a refund unless I returned the product. I've had good success with dupli-color before when buying it from the Auto Parts store, but I would recommend getting it locally rather than on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a scratch on my bumper will i be able to just do the area with all the products or will i have to do the entire bumper to get it to blend |
Answer: | You should not have to paint the entire bumper. First, prep the area where the scratch is. Clean the entire bumper, then depending on the depth of the scratch, you may want to lightly sand and area surrounding the scratch until all is smooth. Then wipe lightly with laquer thinner. Mask off the bumper to isolate it from the car. Get Dupli-color primer and apply a few light coats. Let them dry well before applying more. This will build up the area around the scratch that you had sanded. Let the primer dry overnight. Next, get some 400 and 600 grit sandpaper (wet type) and with a wet piece of 400, sand lightly the entire primed area. Keep dipping the paper in water and don't use fingertips! Clean area with wet cloth and repeat process with 600grit wet paper and you can then sand some of the areas surrounding the primer (scuff the painted surfaces around the repair) Clean it up with damp clothes and let dry. Apply the paint in light coats in a side to side motion. Don't try to cover the primer too fast. Light coats work best and allow dry time in between coats. Eventually the primer will be covered and some of the new paint will then overlap the original paint on bumper (this is part of the blending process) Once all is covered and you cannot see the primer under the paint, let it dry overnight.Next day, get some 1000 grit wet paper and sand the entire repair area lightly. This will help smooth out the new paint. Dont sand too hard so as to make the primer exposed. Sand beyond the new paint so as to scuff up the old untouched paint on the bumper. You are getting the surrounding area ready for the clear cloat blend.Wipe with clean wet cloth and when thoroughly dry you can apply the dupli color clear coat using the same light coat, overlap method. Now you will want to go beyond the repair area bringing the clear coat into the original painted surfaces by a few inches all around. Let the clear coat dry in between coats. Once clear is applyed, let it dry overnight. Next day you can wet sand the entire repair area with 1000 wet paper. Remember, no finger tips. Use your palm or get a sanding block but go lightly. Once you have finished sanding, wipe clean with wet cloth and then polish with Light polishing compound. You can do this by hand if you dont have a buffer. It may sound complicated, but that's a process that will give you the best results outside of going to a body shop. Another consideration, if the scratch is small, get a bottle of duplicolor touch up. It has the brush built in and you can possibly just carefully use the brush and paint to fill in the scratch. I hope this helps! |
