12 best manual transmission fluids

Manual transmission fluid, also known as gearbox oil or manual gearbox fluid, is a specialized lubricant used in vehicles equipped with manual transmissions. It serves several crucial functions in a manual transmission system. Here's what you should know about manual transmission fluids:

  1. Lubrication: One of the primary purposes of manual transmission fluid is to lubricate the various components of the manual transmission system. It reduces friction and minimizes wear and tear on the gears, bearings, and other moving parts inside the transmission.

  2. Cooling: Manual transmissions can generate heat due to the friction between gears and other moving components. Manual transmission fluid helps dissipate this heat, preventing overheating and potential damage to the transmission.

  3. Protection: In addition to lubrication, manual transmission fluid provides a protective barrier against rust and corrosion, extending the lifespan of the transmission components.

  4. Smooth Shifting: Properly maintained transmission fluid ensures smoother gear changes and helps prevent gear synchronization issues, making it easier to shift gears without grinding or difficulty.

  5. Seal Conditioning: Manual transmission fluid can condition seals and gaskets within the transmission, helping to prevent leaks and maintain a proper seal.

  6. Compatibility: It's essential to use the correct type of manual transmission fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Different transmissions may require different formulations of fluid, so consult the owner's manual or a trusted mechanic for guidance.

  7. Change Intervals: Like other automotive fluids, manual transmission fluid should be changed at regular intervals to maintain its effectiveness. The recommended interval varies by vehicle make and model, so refer to the owner's manual for guidance.

  8. Fluid Level Check: Most manual transmissions have a dipstick or fill plug that allows you to check the fluid level. It's essential to maintain the fluid at the recommended level to ensure proper lubrication and operation.

  9. Synthetic vs. Conventional: Manual transmission fluids come in both synthetic and conventional formulations. Synthetic fluids tend to offer better performance and stability at high temperatures but can be more expensive. The choice between synthetic and conventional fluids may depend on your driving conditions and vehicle requirements.

  10. Transmission Fluid Change: Changing manual transmission fluid typically involves draining the old fluid, removing and replacing the transmission pan gasket and filter (if applicable), and refilling the transmission with the recommended fluid. Some transmissions may also have a magnetic drain plug that collects metal debris, which should be cleaned during fluid changes.

  11. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the transmission, including fluid changes, can help extend the life of your manual transmission and prevent costly repairs.

It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the type of manual transmission fluid and the maintenance schedule specified in the owner's manual. Proper maintenance of your manual transmission fluid can contribute to the overall longevity and reliability of your vehicle's transmission system.

Question: Anybody try this in sonic with a 1.8 5 speed? Thanks
Answer: I'm sure the trans in a sonic is Korean made and I use it in my Honda civic si and it made my shifts smooth and precise
Question: I will be replacing the Pensoil Syncromesh in my Jeep Wrangler with the NV3550. Will this be safe to use
Answer: I don't have a Jeep, but the Royal Purple Synchromax fluid is specifically designed to replace all Synchromesh applications so as long as your Jeep's NV3550 calls for Synchromesh (which I think it does) then you should be fine. Synchromax would be a good upgrade.
Question: Any one use this on a G56 dodge manual transmission
Answer: No. But I've used it in my Tremec T56 and it improved the shifting in the tranny vs. the Castrol Dexron III and Mobil 1 ATF that was previously in there at different intervals. For your tranny, you can't go wrong with the RP Synchromax or the Amsoil ATF. These are the 2 best transmission fluids on the amrket, for any manual transmission.
Question: Will thia work for my 99 s10 manual transmission
Answer: I have used it in my 98 S10 with the nv1500 5 speed. Worked fine .

User questions & answers

Question: Would this be safe to use in a 2000 toyota celica gt
Answer: Yes--after some research, this is the oil I chose for my 2000 Celica GT when I replaced its clutch.
Question: Can this be used in a snowblower auger
Answer: I have no idea. If it matches the specs for the auger’s gear box, then it should work like any other gear oil. The important thing to consider is the GL rating that your snowblower needs.
Question: Do I pour the entire contents directly in? Are there any special instructions
Answer: To get maximum benefit of the Red Line you need to replace all the oil in the transmission. For my car, it took 3.4 quarts so I bought four and filled it up until fluid was level with the bottom of the fill plug. If you go to the Red Line website, they have which transmission oil is correct for your car and the capacity of the transmission so you will know how much you will need.
Question: Is anyone running this in an NV4500 long term? How does it hold up
Answer: No experience with the NV4500. Been using it in an '08 Tacoma 5-speed since the first change (now 150K+) with no problems. Two things to keep in mind: 1- This is a GL-4; 2- it is not on NV's recommended list. Both the Redline website and "Bob is the oil guy.com" have a lot of info that might help you decide.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this ok for a NV4500 that does mainly rv pulling
Answer: That's a GM transmission, correct? GM manuals should get Delco Synchromesh. I think thats 75W90. This valvoline MTF, I use in a race miata transmission. Works fine. Psychologically, I feel better with Redline MTF but this Valvoline has never failed me. Transmission works at 7K RPM for 20 hours straight, shifting at redline, always. In other words, I know of nothing wrong but I don't know its viscosity. It seems that NV4500 needs 75W90 and synchromesh is that, for sure.
Question: Will this work for a 1991 mustang gt 5speed transmission
Answer: No do not use this or any gear oil, t5 transmissions have friction material on syncroes...they use atf.
Question: Does it include 12 quarters? This is listing with two options, 1 quarter and 1 quarter case o 12. Is this misleading? thanks
Answer: Either way you only get one quart. I ordered 20 cases and got 20 bottles. Of course I returned them
Question: How do you know that you are authentic
Answer: How do I know that you are

User questions & answers

Question: Does this Genuine Honda Fluid 08798-9031 Manual Transmission Fluid fits to Civic
Answer: Yes about a bottle and a half should be good
Question: Can i use this for my 08 honda civic ex ?? thank you
Answer: If it's a manual/standard/stick shift transmission, then yes.
Question: How many quarts do i need for my 2012 honda civic si 6speed manuel ? thank you
Answer: Hi, for my Honda Civic 2001, I bought one quart, but my mechanic told me we needed two quarts. So, for your Civic 2012 in Honda forums says need 2.5 quarts. Hope this be helpful.
Question: What is the actual weight of this oil
Answer: Honda MTF II 7.5 * All viscosities measured in cSt @ 100C/212F. As stated this is equivalent to 10w-30 engine oil or 75w gearbox oil. The viscosity scales are different as you can tell. The 7.5 is a centistokes unit which is expressed thus 1 cSt = 1 mm2·s−1 = 10−6 m2·s−1. Clear as mud unless you are a physicist which I am not. OTOH you must consider additive packages if you are considering using engine or other oil and Honda is a bit of a muddle. Addiitves are important to preserve the sacrificial brass parts of your synchros. Honda I believe is closer to a gl-3 but not exactly. IMHO stick to the Honda fluid if possible.

Question: I have a bmw 89 325IS and i need 80w gl-4 which one is the one i need to get
Answer: If you have a manual transmission then you are looking at the correct one which is part number 50204
Question: What kind of improvement will I see using this over factory in an mt82 in a mustang
Answer: Not much, it runs a tad smoother when at temp but the notorious 3rd gear issue is still present, I noticed 5th would also scratch when it got really really cold. I'm thinking about switching to ATF like most others have in accordance with Ford's specs.
Question: Can I use this for my 2011 Mazdaspeed 3? (Manual transmission
Answer: It's in my 2014 CX-5 which requires 75W-80. Works better than Mazda MTF.

Red Line (50305) Manual Transmission (MT) 90W Gear Oil - Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Gallon

Red Line

Based on 811 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Red Line's Manual Transmission 90W Gear Oil is most popular in Nissan, Toyota and Mazda manual transmissions and transaxles as well as other selected applications. This is a 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil that’s slightly heavier than MTL and provides excellent protection of gears and synchronizers and its balanced slipperiness provides a perfect coefficient of friction, allowing easier shifting. Red Line Oil's MTL and MT-90 allow proper shifting over the entire temperature range which the transmission will experience due to its wide viscosity. The synthetic base oils used have a very high viscosity index which provides relatively constant viscosity as temperature changes. MTL is a low 70W at very low temperatures and a high 80W, nearly an 85W, at elevated temperatures, providing adequate viscosity to prevent wear and deaden gear noise. MT-90 is a thicker 75W90 version of MTL. The shear stability and oxidation stability of these products are excellent, thus the physical characteristics of Red Line MTL and MT-90 will change little with use.

  • HIGH PERFORMANCE - Gear protection and longer synchro life. Recommended for GL-1, GL-3, and GL-4 applications, as well as where most special synchromesh fluids are specified
  • OFFERS QUICKER SHIFTS - Excellent gear and synchro protection, balanced friction control & slipperiness for easier shifting even in cold climates
  • SAFE FOR BRASS SYNCHROS - GL-4 Gear Oil lacks the reactive sulfurs found in most GL-5 oils that cause damage. Recommended for GL-1, GL-3 & GL-4 applications
  • POPULAR MOTOR OIL FOR - Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, VW/Audi, Lotus Elise/Exige, Toyota, Mendeola transmissions & Atlas transfer cases for Off-Road
  • WHY RED LINE - Established in 1979, Red Line Products perform & protect better than any on the market. No compromises

User questions & answers

Question: Is this product compatible with my 1975 vw beetle, type 1 which spec's 85w/90 gl-4 gear oil? or do you have a synthetic product that is
Answer: I would look on the Volkswagen site or call a Volkswagen service department you can fool around with weights on engine oil but I wouldn't put the wrong weight in on a transmission
Question: why do many say to not change the old gear oil & that the "gunk" in old gear oil makes transmssion last longer & might have problems with new gear oil
Answer: What they are referring to is automatic transmission fluid. Automatic transmissions have a series of "bands" with clutch like materials bonded to the friction side. On a worn out automatic transmission, the friction materials on these bands are already smoothed out and slip. Since automatic transmission are driven by hydraulic pressure, the "gunk" suspended inside old fluid will help with "gripping" action with these band. This redline gear oil is used in Manual transmissions. The old saying would not apply here.
Question: Is MT 90 good for a 1995 jeep yj manual transmission
Answer: Yes, great product; bought the vehicle used and it was not sure what type of fluid it had in the transmission. The jeep sounded like a bus and once I added the MT-90; big difference and most importantly much quietly.
Question: Can you mix gl-4 gear oil with gl-5 gear oil? what is difference? if do 50/50....will be good together? why or why not
Answer: NO NO NO... GL-4 is specific for older transmissions that have bronze/brass parts. GL-5 will DESTROY these parts.. believe me I know from experience. My local speed shop mistakenly gave me GL-5 for my 91 YJ with the X-5 trans. Within ten miles I could smell the problem happening. They honored the mistake and gave me a gallon of correct GL-4 so at 150K my X5 was shifting much better. It's in the shop now at 185K for a trans rebuild (yeah it lasted THAT long) and Troy Transmissions was pleased to hear I wanted Redline. He insists on synthetics for Arizona heat and drivers who get in extreme conditions, look up the "back way to Crown King" for an idea of our kind of fun. And a heads up for the Y owners... beware the fast lube places. I went to two different shops and BOTH insisted GL-5 was the correct lube!!! NOT! Luckily the $450 they wanted just to change fluids scared me off and I did what Jeepers should do... work on your own rig yourself.

User questions & answers

Question: I know it does not have the ford spec for the fiesta st's ib6 transaxle, but would this fluid harm it
Answer: I would think it is ok but call the dealer to ask them since it is a ford fluid they would be the best source for this information.
Question: Will this work for a 98 Ford F150 Manual transmission
Answer: I have used it in manual transmission for several years. Before changing to synthetic fluid, be sure you have good seals. Worn seals will leak, just as if you change and engine from regular oil with worn seals to synthetic motor oil. I have been happy with using it.
Question: NC MX5/6M/Limited slip diff. Can I use for the diff and Tranny? 3 qt. would be perfect (2.2qt+0.7qt). Or you guys rec another fluid for the diff
Answer: I'm no expert, But I'm sure the torque and velocity conditions for the transmission synchro "clutches" are far different than your Limited slip which has much higher & variable torque with lower velocity requirements, not to mention any wheel hop demands on the Limited slip. It was hard enough to finally find a Tranny oil that made that MX5/6M shift perfect (you'll notice it in your first shift, but give it 1000 miles and you'll love it). Check your manual, my 2001 MX5/6M was happy with just 2 qts, with about 1/2 cut left over. Bottom line, I would not try it in a Limited slip, either buy the oil from Mazda or find out the oil specifications and accept nothing less. I can't say for sure since I do not have limited slip and use Mobile 1 syn transmission oil. Best of luck, hope this helps. Geno
Question: Is 2 quarts enough for my 07 miata? Manual says 2.2L but this stuff is expensive
Answer: Do not listen to the person who is telling you to use automatic transmission fluid. They obviously didn't read the question. Yes, this is the stuff for a NC Miata with a manual transmission (might be for others too but I only know the NC1). Yes, it's expensive. Yes, it stinks that you need 2.2 quarts but you can't scrimp and buy just 2. Buy the three pack. You'll also need a pump to transfer from the bottle to trans. Make sure that your car is level when filling. Fill until it starts to weep back out of the fill hole.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for the transfer case on a 2009 gmc 2500 duramax
Answer: Not sure about your specific model and year, or what type of transfer case behind your diesel, but if the transfer case in your truck requires a 75W gear oil this should work good for you. If you don't know what type of transfer case your specific truck has, then refer to your owners manual or the internet.
Question: unlimited Sahara? Does this oil meet or exceed recommended mopar oil
Answer: worked well for my 2000 jeep TJ with oem dana 30 and 35's. Not sure about your jeep, but I heavily recommend getting on some jeep forum sights specific to your year/model vehicle and research.

Question: How many ounces is this container? 1qt / 32oz
Answer: 1 quart or 32 fl. Ounces
Question: What (approximate) viscosity is this fluid? 75w80 perhaps? i have read the astm on this product but can't determine what weight oil this is
Answer: It does not specify viscosity. This was developed specifically for certian manual transmission. I have a 1996 W/T1500 4x4 with the manual 5 speed (Overdrive). It specifies to use this fluid only in this transmission. I could not buy this product locally and had to order it online (Amazon). If you use any other type of gear oil you will ruin this transmission.
