13 best antifreeze coolants

Antifreeze coolants, often simply referred to as "antifreeze," are essential fluids used in vehicles to regulate engine temperature and prevent freezing and overheating. They play a crucial role in maintaining the engine's optimal operating temperature and protecting it from extreme temperatures. Here's what you should know about antifreeze coolants in the context of automotive use:

  1. Function: Antifreeze coolants serve several critical functions in a vehicle's cooling system:

    • Freeze Protection: Antifreeze prevents the cooling system from freezing in cold temperatures, which could otherwise cause severe damage to the engine and radiator.
    • Overheat Protection: It also helps dissipate excess heat generated by the engine, preventing it from overheating in hot conditions.
    • Corrosion Prevention: Antifreeze contains additives that protect the engine and radiator from rust and corrosion, extending the lifespan of these components.
    • Boiling Point Elevation: Antifreeze raises the boiling point of the coolant, reducing the risk of overheating and coolant loss.
  2. Types of Antifreeze: There are several types of antifreeze, including:

    • Ethylene Glycol: The most common type, typically used in most vehicles. It provides excellent freeze protection and heat transfer capabilities.
    • Propylene Glycol: Less toxic than ethylene glycol and often used in applications where environmental concerns are a factor, such as in some RVs and boats.
    • Organic Acid Technology (OAT) and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT): These newer formulations provide extended service intervals and are often found in modern vehicles.
  3. Coolant Color: Antifreeze coolants come in various colors, including green, orange, yellow, pink, and blue. The color is not an indication of its type or compatibility but often helps identify the specific coolant type used in a vehicle.

  4. Compatibility: It's crucial to use the correct type of antifreeze recommended by the vehicle manufacturer to avoid compatibility issues. Mixing incompatible coolants can lead to corrosion and cooling system problems.

  5. Coolant Maintenance: Regularly checking and maintaining the coolant level and quality is essential for the health of your vehicle's engine. This includes monitoring the level in the reservoir, inspecting for leaks, and replacing coolant according to the manufacturer's recommended intervals.

  6. Flush and Change: Over time, coolant can become contaminated with impurities and lose its effectiveness. Periodically, it's necessary to flush the old coolant from the system and replace it with fresh coolant to ensure proper engine cooling and protection.

  7. Safety: It's essential to handle antifreeze coolants with care as they are toxic if ingested. Store them out of reach of children and pets, and dispose of used coolant properly at recycling centers or hazardous waste disposal facilities.

In summary, antifreeze coolants are critical fluids in an automotive cooling system that protect the engine from freezing and overheating while preventing corrosion. Using the correct type of coolant and maintaining it properly is essential for the longevity and performance of your vehicle's engine. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations on coolant type and maintenance.

User questions & answers

Question: This is the exact coolant my manual says to buy but in the match your vehicle drop down it's saying this is not a match for my 2014 grand Jeep Cheroke
Answer: I believe that is because the Mopar part number is not in the title. I compared it with another listing to make sure. It says the right MS spec on the bottle.
Question: Is this the right coolant for my Jeep Wrangler jk
Answer: YES! This is the OAT coolant your 2013+ Jeep JK needs! Do not use the 5 years / 100k HOAT type!!! These 2 varieties DO NOT mix and will clog up your system.
Question: Does this work in a 2017 jeep wrangler? I was told it wouk
Answer: If your vehicle calls for MS-12106 then this is the coolant you need. On my 2017 Pacifica it was labeled right on the filler cap.
Question: what color is it
Answer: I just bought this exact product. It’s 50/50 and it’s already prediluted. You do not add water to this product. The color is purple on the 50/50 not pink as some have stated.

User questions & answers

Question: When I Looked up this one popped up for dexcool. What’s the difference
Answer: I just had it installed a day ago it seems to have better power. And it also has seems to have better shift points I tried to program it for gas mileage doesn’t seem to of helped as of yet
Question: Is this a pink
Answer: The box it came in said it was for 2017 and up
Question: Is this green coolent
Answer: Yes, you can. But for best results, you should use with an oil change.
Question: What is the difference between this and Valvoline long life coolant for asian vehicles which sells for
Answer: HI Jon. Yes, I have noticed an improvement in oil consumption. We have a 02 Chevy Avalanche with about 220k on it and it would generally need a quart added between changes. We now add the Lucas Stabilizer as part of the oil change and there is now no need to add oil between changes. Also of note is that we had an annoying valve tappet noise when cold starting the engine. With the addition of the Lucas this has been significantly reduced. My Quicklube oil change shop does not carry Lucas but I order it on Amazon and take it with me and they add it. Hope this helps. Oh, one more thing, the Lucas automatic transmission additive is also extremely effective. Happy motoring.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i use this my 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo and 2003 toyota corolla ce
Answer: Yes, but it will be much more expensive than mass market automotive coolants. Most other coolants are ethylene glycol (EG), this is propylene glycol(PG). This (Engine Ice) coolant is more environmentally friendly and does work a little better for cooling. I use it in my motorcycle for track use because most tracks ban EG - because EG's toxic and slick if spilled on the track. If you use this, flush your old system as thoroughly as possible with demineralized or distilled water to avoid diluting this new coolant with left over EG. Look up PG and EG on Google to see other pros and cons...
Question: Do i have to do a flush, or is this coolant okay to be mix
Answer: Iit is diffent than regular coolant. I flushed with water and then added. See one is propylene glycol and the other may be ethylene glycol. I believe engine ice is propylene glycol.
Question: Does this come prediluted
Answer: As previously stated, Engine Ice is prediluted. I own a Honda CRF450X and one container was more than enough for my bike.
Question: Can I use this in my 2009 Yamaha fz6r
Answer: Yes. I actually called Yamaha Headquarters before putting it in my 07 Yamaha R1 just to be sure that it was safe. Yamaha said they can't recommend it as they have their own product line but it's completely safe to use. I'm extremely pleased with it myself, my bike runs 20° cooler now, I kid you not. It's been great for me so far and I put it in approx 3 months ago or so. Go for it, you won't be disappointed. Flush the old fluid out with DISTILLED water until it comes out as clear as possible then put the engine ice in. I would def purchase again.

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant ready to provide you with dependable horsepower and is proven to reduce operating temperatures. The key to horsepower is not losing it! Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is engineered to keep your operating temperatures at optimum performance to not lose power through excess heat.

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant will provide you with dependable power and reduced operating temperatures regardless of the terrain you tackle.

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant has an excellent high heat capacity and thermal conductivity characteristic, which in testing, has proven to exceed the abilities of most (ethylene glycol) coolants. It provides efficient & effective engine heat transfer.

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is a proven product, with added environmental benefits to assure the longevity of your engine, and the world we play in.

Ready to Use

Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is pre-mixed with de-ionized water. The process of de-ionizing water eliminates all of the impurities that can do harm to your cooling system. Regardless if you are using tap, bottled, distilled, spring or R/O (reverse osmosis) waters, it can still contain minute particles of iron, magnesium, rust, lime and calcium. Many of these waters also contain chemicals, such as chlorine, fluorides and acids. Want proof? Take two different brands of distilled waters and perform your own taste test. They each taste different don’t they? If water were water, why would they be different? It’s because of the varying amounts of chemicals and minerals in these waters. These minerals and chemicals are what is the cause the scarring, scaling and mineral build-ups in your cooling system. Many also attribute these minerals and chemicals to water pump seal and gasket failures.

Formulated with Propylene Glycol

As compared to the ethylene glycol used in most other brands, propylene glycol is far less toxic and safer for children, pets, and wildlife. Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant is also phosphate free (phosphates kill the smallest forms of life in the environment in addition to trees and plants). Propylene glycol comes in both an industrial form and a pharmaceutical form and is used in many consumer products including hair conditioners, cosmetics, and many over-the-counter medications.

Propylene Glycol, the base fluid of Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant , meets or exceeds all AS, SAE, Government and Manufacturers standards. It also has NO statutes or health warnings from the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA), CERCLA (Superfund), Superfund Amendments & Re-authorization Act (SARA), Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), Federal Health & Safety Administration (FHSA).

User questions & answers

Question: DODGE 1968 blown gas, new aluminum heads, cast iron block, aluminum water pump, Are isues with different metals? ALL NEW
Answer: Hi,Evans coolant is a propylene glycol based coolant that is very non reactive. It does not corrode or change over time . Jay Leno has used it in his expensive Dusenbergs for over 15 years. For me it is a lifetime coolant. Be sure to flush all water out of your system (up to 3 percent is ok) and only add Evans coolant to your system.Gordon
Question: Does this come with the warning stickers? Also is one gallon of prep enough to flush out a v6 engine block
Answer: Before using the prep, I would recommend draining coolant by opening radiator, or overflow cap and draining from the low point on bottom of radiator. Use an air compressor and a rag and make a seal over radiator cap or overflow hole and blow the rest of that coolant out. Then you can put the prep fluid in, and some waterless coolant if needed and let your system circulate a few cycles before draining, and filling completely with the waterless coolant. Or you can just buy a boat
Question: Why is it 6 dollars cheaper to order 1 gallon 4 times than ordering 4 gallons in one order? Do the math
Answer: I am not the pricing guy. I would just order that one gallon 4 times if I were you.
Question: Does this come with the testing kit? And do the test strips expire
Answer: Both the Evans test strips and conversion kits were discontinued over a year ago. The test strips do have an expiration date, any test strips that may still be in circulation have expired. We are trying to remove all Amazon listings depicting either the test strips or conversion kits. Any questions concerning testing the water content of your coolant after converting your vehicle to Evans Coolant, please call the Evans tech line 888-990-2665 M-F 9am to 5pm eastern or e mail [email protected]

Evans High Performance Engine Coolant

Evans Waterless Coolants have a boiling point of 375°F, well above the boiling point of other engine coolants. This eliminates the vapor barrier that can cause hot spots and pre-ignition in engines with water based coolants. Evans Waterless Coolant ensures that the coolant remains in a liquid state and in constant contact with your internal engine components for consistently effective cooling.

Corrosion and Electrolysis Protection

Water is very corrosive and a good conductor of electricity. By eliminating water in your cooling system. Evans Waterless Coolants virtually eliminates corrosion and electrolysis when compared to water-based antifreeze.

Reduced Vapor Pressure

With heat water generates steam in you cooling system, causing high vapor pressure that exerts internal stress on cooling system components. With Evans High Performance Waterless Coolant, this pressure is dramatically reduced, extending the cooling system's operating life and preventing breakdowns.

User questions & answers

Question: I believe valvoline replaced our coolant with this in yellow. chrysler recommends hoat 5 year 100,000 mile. would using this be ok
Answer: I have had it in my 2005 Durango 4.7 for 2 years now with no issues. Truck runs cooler than before.
Question: More than 50/50% won't transfer heat as well. Less concentrate will not prevent corrosion properly. This is aside from temp issues w/freeze/boil
Answer: Estimate the minimum temperature your car will see and then use the chart at http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Valvoline_MaxLife_AFC_Technical_Bulletin.pdf to determine the concentration needed to prevent freezing at that temperature. I would be more concerned with freezing your block than reduced heat transfer. To some extent, your car's cooling system will compensate for the compromised heat transfer properties of a higher concentration.
Question: Is this the concentrate or is this the 50 / 50 premix
Answer: it is the concentrate
Question: How wide is the mouth of the container
Answer: About the same as a regular antifreeze gallon container

User questions & answers

Question: can you mix this with barstop if you all ready put that in the radiator
Answer: I did mix this with Irontite All Weather Seal. Did the K-seal first. Irontite a week later. Just to be sure. Since they both said it can remain in the system. Two weeks, still good.
Question: Can you use this in a 2013 escape
Answer: Unless specifically told to use no heating system sealants I have no reason I can think of you can't use it. I used some but sparingly until it got the job done. Its a little bottle but still have half left. It's been okay for about 6 months now.
Question: Does it discolor the antifreeze? Thanks
Answer: Unfortunately I can't say. I have a GM vehicle that uses the orangish color engine coolant and it and this product are so close in color it's hard to say if it would discolor the usual green-colored coolant found in non-GM vehicles. The other challenge is that I can only look at the coolant through an overflow reservoir and it's so dark when I look inside (I have to use an LED flashlight to see it adequately) that it would be hard to tell if there was any discoloration.
Question: will this work for leakey gaskets
Answer: This is "liquid glass" that dries rock hard and will seal your head gasket leak (its been used in farm equipment for over 75 years and is WELL proven to work, and it was discovered over a hundred years ago), but you MUST perform a simple test. Start your vehicle, let it idle for 45 minutes straight. If the temperature gauge does not indicate that your engine is overheating, then this product will most likely work. No overheating at an idle for 45 minutes MEANS that the head gasket leak is still small enough to be filled by this liquid glass. Shake the container for 30 seconds, put the liquid in your COOLANT system, drive for an hour (or other words, operate at normal temperature, especially if its an aluminum block with cast iron heads), and then let it sit for 24-48 hours (the longest time is better). This sitting time allows the liquid glass to harden completely through. If it overheats then, it most likely its a thermostat or water pump or lower radiator hose sucking shut under load (sometimes the upper one also) or radiator or radiator fan or leaking core plug or leaking coolant storage unit OR your ENGINE OIL is very low from leaking (completely different problem that has nothing to do with the coolant system, but much to do with the cooling of the engine also) or heat indicator gauge or it still could be a blown head gasket, because the hole is just too big for the sealant to seal it up OR the head gasket BLOWS in another area after you have sealed up the first hole with the coolant sealant you added (that's why you should add it three times three different bottles of liquid glass over three months as I will mention below, that way, if it does blow in another area you will most likely SEAL that area also). But buy this and try it even if your vehicle fails the 45 minute test after 10 minutes. Sometimes, it will still seal the leak, or at least slow it down. Also, you can add this once a month for three months, and maybe that will work also (this gives you a month to see how the car performs under various conditions, and for the reason I just mentioned above). If you need the car to last for just a short while (month to six months) this can be a quick fix to hold you over until you can sell the car (under buyer be where conditions) or get it to the shop when you have the money. $15 and a few minutes of your time OR the mechanic, you have to decide. Good luck. I'm a retired mechanic with two degrees in Diesel mechanics and I ran a shop for a year.... :)

Permanent Coolant Leak Repair with K-Seal

Coolant leaks don’t have to result in costly repair bills – simply add K-Seal to your coolant system for a quick and permanent fix. K-Seal is trusted by millions of customers worldwide, and the only coolant leak repair fluid carried by the AA, the UK’s largest roadside repair company.

K-Seal couldn’t be simpler to use. K-Seal’s unique formula will seek out holes and cracks, and permanently seal them, with no adverse impact on the efficiency of your engine cooling.

Coolant System Sealer

Once the crack or hole has been located, the microfibers instantly begin to mesh together within the gap, building a seal literally fiber by fiber to stop the coolant leaking through the gap.

The particles in our K-Seal products are very precisely designed to be large enough to repair holes up to 0.635mm in size but deliberately small enough to never block any passageways or tubes within the cooling system, including those inside the heater core and radiator.

Once the microfibers have sealed and fixed the leak, a combination of exposure to either the external atmosphere or the gases within the combustion chamber and the heat within the cooling system and engine causes the K-Seal formula to cure. This results in an extremely strong and permanent seal able to withstand even the high pressures from the combustion chamber. This is how K-Seal Ultimate is able to repair head gasket failures, even where the cooling system is being over-pressurized exhaust gases entering the system

Common Coolant Leaks

K-Seal can deal with all of these leaks and more, as long as they are identified as early as possible. It is easy to use – simply shake it and pour it into the coolant mixture and it will work automatically.

User questions & answers

Question: i intend buying 8 gals to africa. my toyoyta sequoia 2008 needs 4 and i need 4 as reserve. what is the shelf life of this product if un opened
Answer: The manufacturer's product information page states a 5 year shelf life for this product.
Question: So my coolant is about to hit low and going to add some of this can i mix this with pink coolant? pretty sure the pink comes from oem
Answer: Using this to top off pink/red coolant will be fine, I've used this to replace the coolant in my 05 Solara and to top off my 17 Camry. Most of the long life coolants are basically the same however there are some you shouldn't mix anything else with like GM's Dexcool.
Question: Does this coolant contain 2-EHA (2-ethylhexanoic acid
Answer: Ingredient label says: "Ethylene Glycol (107-21-1), Water (7732-18-5), Diethylene Glycol (111-46-6), Sodium Benzoate (532-32-1), Corrosion Inhibitors, Defoamers, Dye, and Bittering Agent"
Question: is it safe for honda odyssey
Answer: Old question, but the Zerex stuff (and Wal Mart's Valvoline Asian) as both red. Honda uses Type 2 blue coolant. It would probably work, but I wouldn't want to mix colors. Either get the OEM Honda stuff which is around $22 a gallon now, or you can go generic and buy the blue stuff from Pentosin (Pentosin Pentofrost A3). The Pentosin is the closest thing to OEM Honda coolant you can get.
