Answer: I don't know if it will "refresh" gasoline that old. It should reduce some of the "gummy" deposits that form in older gas. I once used this successfully to unclog the fuel jets on an outboard motor by simply pouring a fairly high concentration of it into the fuel tank and letting it sit a few days. However, three years is a long time for gas to sit if it wasn't already mixed with a good fuel stabilizer all that time. If you mix this stuff with fresh gas, I would definitely feel comfortable using that gas 1 to 2 years later (and have done so in my lawn mower), expecting good results.

How Does ZDDP / ZINC Work in Engine Oil?

As ZINC (ZDDP) is heated it creates a film that coats the engine parts with an anti-wear layer, think of it as a sacrificial layer that will wear away preventing wear on your vital engine parts. This is very beneficial for flat tappet motors, which have as the name suggests a flat lifter. When the engine is running the cam lobe is in constant contact with the flat surface of the tappet. This creates high temperatures due to the friction between the two. If the protective film created by the ZDDP was not present this heat and friction would wear away at the lifters and cam leading to engine failure.

ZDDP is Vital for Engine Break In

Breaking in an engine is vital to ensure proper sealing of the piston rings as well as setting the lifters to a new cam. This process will create a lot of heat and wear as engine parts wear away to fit the small areas that machining and manufacturing are just not able to fit up exactly. With Zinc these areas will be treated with a sacrificial layer preventing more wear than is needed to break the engine in.

Answer: I just used Sea Foam in my oil for the first time. I have a 50 year old car with its original, never-rebuilt motor. The lifters have been tapping for awhile so I thought it was worth a try. I added Sea Foam to the crankcase oil according to the directions (1.5 oz. per quart of oil). I let the motor run for about 15 minutes. The lifter noise went away almost immediately. Afterwards, I changed the oil as normal. When I drained the old oil, it was noticeably thinner due to the presence of the Sea Foam. I added new oil and filter, and the engine runs like a top now. No more noise. This stuff is great.

Replace the valve seals - could be an expensive fix. Or try some chemical to swell the seals, but it's not a permanent fix. 2. Worn cylinder walls solution. This could work, as long as the wear isn't too bad. Restore will fill in some of the scratches in the cylinder and reduce the blue smoke - maybe even eliminate it. 3. Bad rings solution. Try running some engine cleaner through the fuel - Seafoam is a good one to try. If the rings are sticking, you may get lucky and it could clear up the problem. 4. Head gasket solution. If there's no white smoke coming out, then only oil is leaking past the head gasket. The only fix is to replace the head gasket, which is costly. I hope this helps.

Answer: While this is an excellent product for older engines....it is not necessary for newer cars. I use it on all my older classic cars....up to about 2004. The ZDDP is basically a zinc additive that the petroleum industry was mandated to remove from newer oils...unfortunately zinc was required for older engines as it keeps the lifters and camshaft in the older engines from destroying themselves. The design of the newer camshaft and lifters along with the new additives used in the newer oils, gives your engine and components all the protection they need. If you are worried about engine protection buy a good quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1. It is far superior to any conventional motor oil and additives that you can buy. But if you drive or maintain an older vehicle (2004 or older) or have any off road engines, (ATV's, etc.) I would highly recommend this products use with the conventional oils available, (as they do not contain any zinc additives).

Application

The engine treatment is conducted in three stages:

Answer: The prolong super L is designed to be added to the engine oil and remain effective until the next oil change; then discarded of course with the old oil; having fulfilled its purpose. It would seem prudent to use as directed.

Answer: Funny you should ask this. I put a small amount in my small compressor sometime ago and have had no problems.( I work with plastics). I have used Prolong oil and transmission products for many , many years and swear that the product is and does EXACTLY as stated. I have given these products to friends and family for gifts. I always tell them when they have the oil or transmission fluids changed. NOT to give the Prolong to the mechanic unless they are trusted. Put the product in YOURSELF!. I always do this myself. I drive a 1996 Ford Explorer 4x4 with now 235k miles. Still has plenty of power for a 6 cyl. I'm sure the compressor would love a SMALL amount .
