Answer:	Using water to sand wood is a special case... It does pull up the soft growth, which you then sand off, and when it dries, it leaves the darker growth standing slightly proud of the surface. Once you finish, you wind up with stronger 3-d texture on the wood grain, and have to go to another level of work to get a smooth surface on that.The glue stands up to oil as well as water. This is where it becomes important for wood-working. If you use it to oil-sand the wood's surface, then the varnish component of the oil combines with the micro-wood-dust that gets rubbed into the surface, and it makes a GREAT finish on most surfacable woods. Not so good on soft woods, of course -- those really need a harder surface for good protection. However, it was outstanding on my teak, maple, and oak, and it does well on my fir as well. Once you smooth the surface with conventional 150 grit, apply a coat of oil with your hand or a rag, let it soak in and re-apply every couple hours until it stops sucking it in, then start with 200-ish grit to sand the surface, wipe clean, then go to 300-sh (whatever is closest), oil the surface and sand it in. Stop there with fir. For harder woods, go to 400-ish grit, oil and sand again, wipe down well, rub on one more coat of oil, and next day, it will feel just as smooth as a baby's bottom, and glow like it's lit from just under the surface. Beautiful.Note: natural varnish is made from oils that have been dehydrated and processed, by the way, so some natural oils -- notably linseed and olive oil -- can help create a good, durable surface.

Answer:	No, I don't think it would work well on your lap. The laptop isn't secured to the stand, and there isn't enough of a base to make it stable on a non-flat, shifting surface. It works extremely well on a flat, stable surface, however.

Answer:	I have used the stand for other 17" notebooks but not with the HP 17" - i use it for my macbook 15". There are two things you need to consider:1. Max tilt angle of the screen i.e. screen fold back from the body - if its greater than equal to 135 degrees (max on the macbook), then the viewing angle works. Any less, it's not likely to be ergonomic. 2. Is the weight distribution of the HP evenly weighted at the base or weighted to the rear of the machine. If even, then it should work, however, if most of the weight is to the rear, it might be unstable as portion of the rear will stick out from the top of the stand.

Question:	How long are the legs
Answer:	There aren't any legs, it rests on the desk and you can move the part that holds your paperwork up straight, slanted, or let it "hang down" as far as your keyboard. I don't do that, I keep it high enough to have free play for my hands. It saves having to turn my head to the side when I'm entering information. (I have one day when I "post" from $20-$40,000 in Medicaid payments, so it saves greatly on my neck). I recommend it if inputting info all day leaves you with neck pain.
Question:	Could you slide this down over your keyboard to make notations on documents
Answer:	The height should be find for most modern keyboards. The width would be the problem. I have a compact keyboard that would fit under it (without a numpad), but my regular keyboards would be too wide.
