12 best voyager brake controls

Voyager brake controls are a type of trailer brake controller used in automotive applications. These brake controls are designed to improve the safety and control of trailers by allowing the driver to manually control the brakes on a trailer that is being towed behind a vehicle. Here are some key points about Voyager brake controls:

  1. Brake Control Functionality: Voyager brake controls are used to manage the braking force of a trailer. They help ensure that the trailer's brakes are synchronized with the vehicle's brakes, allowing for smoother stops and reduced wear and tear on both the trailer and the towing vehicle.

  2. Manual Override: Voyager brake controllers typically feature a manual override option. This allows the driver to independently apply the trailer brakes, which can be particularly useful in emergency situations or when descending steep hills.

  3. Brake Sensing: These brake controllers often use technology to sense the braking force applied to the towing vehicle. This information is used to modulate the trailer's brakes, ensuring they engage at the right intensity, whether it's a gentle slowdown or a sudden stop.

  4. Compatibility: Voyager brake controls are compatible with various types of trailer brake systems, including electric brakes and electric-over-hydraulic brakes. They come in different models and capacities to suit various towing needs.

  5. Installation: Installing a Voyager brake control typically involves connecting it to the vehicle's electrical system and trailer brakes. Some models may require additional wiring and setup, depending on the specific trailer and vehicle configuration.

  6. Adjustability: These brake controllers often offer adjustable settings, allowing the driver to fine-tune the trailer brake response to match the towing conditions and preferences. Adjustments may include brake gain, sensitivity, and response time.

  7. Safety and Compliance: Properly functioning brake controls are crucial for road safety. It's essential to ensure that your Voyager brake control system is installed and maintained in compliance with local regulations and manufacturer recommendations.

  8. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the brake control system is important to ensure its reliability and safety. This may include checking for loose connections, inspecting wiring, and testing the system periodically.

Voyager brake controls, like other trailer accessories, play a critical role in towing safety by helping drivers maintain control over their trailers during various driving conditions. It's essential to choose a brake controller that suits your specific towing needs and to follow installation and maintenance guidelines to ensure safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy the pigtail for it to fit my 06dodge ram
Answer: Just type in your 2002 Suburban and Amazon will put the one you need right there. That is what I did and it was perfect plugged right in. Easy as that
Question: Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time
Answer: After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info.
Question: What is the dimensions of this unit (height, width, length front to back
Answer: Yes, it has a knob on top and a sensitivity bottom on side. The unit will also automatically sense if you need more trailer braking on emergency stops. If you have it set on 3.0 and you are only using 2.2 , it will automatically go to 3.0 if needed. It is a nice unit. Pulling 20 ft. Enclosed with Chevy Duramax.
Question: Why does Amazon say it won't fit my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK, aren't they all fairly universal? Or is it just because I don't have a factory harness
Answer: Proportional..the internal 'tri axis' sensor varies the intensity of electrical brake output dependent on vehicle motion.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between this drawtite 5535 and the reese-towpower-8508211-proportional-brake-evn
Answer: Same company Horizon Global has both brands among others. These are similar controllers. Key will be to check compatibility and wiring cable match to your specific vehicle. Their technical support is very helpful in answering on line questions. I’d recommend you submit.
Question: Does this come with the mating connector
Answer: No it doesn't. You have to order it. It comes with standard connector and then you need to purchase connector or splice it in.
Question: Will this work on a Chevy 2018 Traverse
Answer: I really don’t know if it does, it work on my Chevy Silverado
Question: The "gain" control is adjustable from 0 - 10 in 0.1 increments (vs the "boost"). How is the "gain" is set for a particular load
Answer: The basic answer is you set up your trailer empty and do a couple of 40mph stops, adjusting the gain until the trailer stops smoothly with no 'jerking' and no tire lock up. That is your 'empty' setting. Then, load up the trailer with what you will normally be carrying, and see if the trailer stops good. It should not lock up (obviously), but will also probably take longer to stop and 'push' the tow vehicle. Now hit Boost 1 and check again. Do it again with B2 and B3. The Boost setting that gives you the shortest stopping distance WITHOUT lock up or 'pushing/jerking' is the setting you want to use as your 'loaded' setting. If you cant find a good Boost setting, adjust your Gain up or down a little and test again. Keep going until you have a good smooth stop with both an empty trailer and no Boost, and loaded trailer with Boost. Heres the 'manual', such as it is: http://www.draw-tite.com/support/installation/N5535.pdf

If it’s not there then you will have to wire the entire length of the truck.

Question: I have a 94 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins will it work with it
Answer: My package was damaged on arrival and no mounting bracket but the paperwork included states that there should have been.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt
Answer: The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only.
Question: According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time
Answer: You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin.
Question: do the brakes engage when backing up
Answer: Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind.
Question: does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system
Answer: No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine.

Question: Does this work with adaptive cruise control
Answer: The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon.
Question: I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug
Answer: When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have
Question: Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same
Answer: John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway.
Question: For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees
Answer: You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this fit the 2015 Ram? Were does the small plug connect
Answer: I have a 2014 and the 2015 should be the same. To find the connector for the small plug is kinda tricky. It's tied up above the throttle pedle. Search YouTube.com for install video and it will clear up and questions you have.
Question: Does this adapter work with other brands of controllers as long as they have the "4 pole" connection
Answer: Yes, it should work with all brands of controllers that are wired with 4 poles as long as the 4 poles are the same. If the color coding of each pole is the same you should be good. Please be advised that brake controllers have come a long way so you should use a modern controller to best manage your towing. Modern controllers have adjustable braking pressures and override switches that you can control with your hand. They can also be mounted is various positions for easy access. I believe Tekonsha makes the Reese brands as well. Maybe others as well.
