12 best voyager brake controllers
Voyager brake controllers are a type of device used in towing and trailer applications to control the braking of a trailer when it is being towed by a vehicle. These controllers are designed to help ensure safe and efficient braking for both the towing vehicle and the trailer.
Key features and information about Voyager brake controllers include:
Braking Control: Voyager brake controllers are known for their ability to provide proportional braking control. This means that they can apply the trailer's brakes in proportion to the braking force applied to the towing vehicle. This helps to prevent abrupt stops and uneven braking, which can improve safety and reduce wear and tear on the trailer and towing vehicle.
Manual Override: Many Voyager brake controllers come equipped with a manual override feature. This allows the driver to manually activate the trailer's brakes, independent of the towing vehicle's brakes. This can be useful in situations where additional braking force is needed, such as when going downhill or during emergency stops.
Easy Installation: Voyager brake controllers are typically designed for easy installation. They are often mounted within the driver's reach for convenient access and adjustment. Installation usually involves connecting the controller to the vehicle's electrical system and the trailer's brake system.
Compatibility: Voyager brake controllers are compatible with a wide range of trailer types, including travel trailers, boat trailers, and utility trailers. They are designed to work with both electric and hydraulic trailer brake systems.
Adjustability: These controllers often feature adjustable settings, allowing the driver to fine-tune the braking force to suit different towing conditions and trailer loads.
Diagnostic Features: Some Voyager brake controllers are equipped with diagnostic features that provide real-time information about the status of the trailer's brakes and the controller itself. This can help in identifying and addressing any issues that may arise during towing.
Safety: Using a brake controller like Voyager enhances safety by ensuring that the trailer's brakes respond appropriately to the towing vehicle's braking input. This can reduce the risk of accidents and improve overall control while towing.
It's important to note that while Voyager is a well-known brand for brake controllers, there are other brands and models available on the market, each with its own set of features and specifications. The choice of a brake controller should be based on the specific towing needs and preferences of the user, as well as compatibility with the towing vehicle and trailer.
Always refer to the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines for proper installation and use of a Voyager brake controller or any other similar device to ensure safe and effective braking while towing a trailer.

Question: | Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time |
Answer: | After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this fit the 2015 Ram? Were does the small plug connect |
Answer: | I have a 2014 and the 2015 should be the same. To find the connector for the small plug is kinda tricky. It's tied up above the throttle pedle. Search YouTube.com for install video and it will clear up and questions you have. |
Question: | Does this adapter work with other brands of controllers as long as they have the "4 pole" connection |
Answer: | Yes, it should work with all brands of controllers that are wired with 4 poles as long as the 4 poles are the same. If the color coding of each pole is the same you should be good. Please be advised that brake controllers have come a long way so you should use a modern controller to best manage your towing. Modern controllers have adjustable braking pressures and override switches that you can control with your hand. They can also be mounted is various positions for easy access. I believe Tekonsha makes the Reese brands as well. Maybe others as well. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with adaptive cruise control |
Answer: | The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon. |
Question: | I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug |
Answer: | When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have |
Question: | Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same |
Answer: | John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway. |
Question: | For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller. |

Question: | will this fit a 1999 ford f |
Answer: | I believe so. Check compatibility chart to be certain. |
Question: | Will it fit 2005 ford f |
Answer: | I do not believe that this harness will fit a 2005 Ford F350. The harness adaptor is plug-and-play for factory installed towing only. If you go to Tekonsha's website directly, you should be able to search for the proper harness adaptor. The Tekonsha brand plug-and-play vehicle specific harness will only work if the truck has the Ford factory installed tow package. If it is an aftermarket tow package (or none) you will need to use the generic harness which comes with the Tekonsha unit and wire it in yourself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How long is the warranty |
Answer: | No this is not plug and play on a 1995 GM full sized truck. If the truck is equipped with a factory tow haul package then it should have trailer brake wiring taped back on the harness coming from the fuse block on the drivers fender and there’s also wiring taped back at the rear driver side of the frame. If it’s not there then you will have to wire the entire length of the truck. |
Question: | What does this unit come with |
Answer: | I think so it worked great on 2016 Silverado with the Tekonsha adapter. Plugged right in. |
Question: | Does this connect to 2021 dodger Ram or do I need to purchase a wiring adapter? Thanks |
Answer: | your truck should come with a built in break controller. mine did, it would be located above the buttons to turn off your rear view camera |
Question: | I have a 94 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins will it work with it |
Answer: | My package was damaged on arrival and no mounting bracket but the paperwork included states that there should have been. |
