13 best trailer brakes

Trailer brakes, Brake Controls, Trailer Accessories, and Exterior Accessories are important components in the realm of automotive accessories, particularly for individuals who tow trailers with their vehicles. These accessories play a crucial role in enhancing safety, control, and efficiency when towing trailers.

  1. Trailer Brakes: Trailer brakes are an essential safety feature for trailers being towed by vehicles. They help in slowing down or stopping the trailer independently from the towing vehicle, enhancing safety during braking maneuvers. There are various types of trailer brakes, including electric brakes, hydraulic surge brakes, and air brakes. Electric trailer brakes are common and are controlled electronically through a brake controller in the towing vehicle.

  2. Brake Controls: Brake controls, often referred to as brake controllers or trailer brake controllers, are devices installed in the towing vehicle to manage and control the trailer brakes. They enable the driver to adjust the braking force applied to the trailer, providing a smoother and safer towing experience. Brake controllers can be proportional, time-delayed, or inertia-activated, with proportional controllers being the most popular for their ability to match the braking force to the towing vehicle's deceleration.

  3. Trailer Accessories: Trailer accessories encompass a wide range of items designed to enhance the functionality, safety, and convenience of trailers. This includes trailer hitches, hitch locks, trailer jacks, trailer lights, trailer wiring harnesses, tie-down straps, and wheel chocks. These accessories are crucial for securely attaching the trailer to the towing vehicle and ensuring proper functioning during transportation.

  4. Exterior Accessories: Exterior accessories for trailers often focus on improving the aesthetics, durability, and functionality of the trailer. This can include items like trailer covers for protection against the elements, spare tire mounts for carrying an extra tire, trailer fenders to shield the wheels, and steps or ladders for easier access to the trailer.

In summary, trailer brakes, brake controls, trailer accessories, and exterior accessories are essential components for individuals who tow trailers. These accessories collectively contribute to enhancing safety, control, and efficiency while towing, ensuring a smoother and more secure towing experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Will a standard Bearing buddy (1.98") work with these
Answer: If you need 2 inch brakes there the same. Not sure about the part number
Question: Do these come with the backing plate mounting hardware or what size nuts and bolts are needed
Answer: Yes. The assemblies are available on Amazon or etrailer dot com, but etrailer is more expensive.
Question: Will this fit AL-KO axles
Answer: The trailer brakes are NOT self adjusting, unlike most drum brakes on cars and trucks. There is however some "give" with an electric braking system on trailers. The adjustment is pretty simple and need to be done when installed and periodically thereafter. To Adjust: the bottom side of the drum brakes between the brake shoes you should see the "Adjuster" with a spring between the two shoes- This screwed wheel is your adjuster. It will need to be manually adjusted on install- to do that remove the rubber plug on the back side of the Backing plate and using a large flat tip screw driver or brake show adjuster tool and rotate while spinning the Drum until it stops the drum. Then Back the adjuster off just a little until the drum spins easily again. Replace the rubber plug. Do this for all Electric Brake units.
Question: Will this fit a Tractor Supply Company 3500lb axle
Answer: My axle was a 12” hub by 2” wide brake pads. The brake housing has a center hole that you need to measure along with how many nuts that it takes to mount. Mine took 5 some take 4. As you look for the new brake assembly you will need to know the details to make sure you get the correct brake assembly. Hope that helps you.

Question: What is the inner and outer bearing sizes
Answer: The one I took off looked exactly the same. two black wires. From the trailer you have a common & power. Just hook the white to one black & the red to the other black. The magnet on the brake energizes when power is sent.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between this drawtite 5535 and the reese-towpower-8508211-proportional-brake-evn
Answer: Same company Horizon Global has both brands among others. These are similar controllers. Key will be to check compatibility and wiring cable match to your specific vehicle. Their technical support is very helpful in answering on line questions. I’d recommend you submit.
Question: Does this come with the mating connector
Answer: No it doesn't. You have to order it. It comes with standard connector and then you need to purchase connector or splice it in.
Question: Will this work on a Chevy 2018 Traverse
Answer: I really don’t know if it does, it work on my Chevy Silverado
Question: The "gain" control is adjustable from 0 - 10 in 0.1 increments (vs the "boost"). How is the "gain" is set for a particular load
Answer: The basic answer is you set up your trailer empty and do a couple of 40mph stops, adjusting the gain until the trailer stops smoothly with no 'jerking' and no tire lock up. That is your 'empty' setting. Then, load up the trailer with what you will normally be carrying, and see if the trailer stops good. It should not lock up (obviously), but will also probably take longer to stop and 'push' the tow vehicle. Now hit Boost 1 and check again. Do it again with B2 and B3. The Boost setting that gives you the shortest stopping distance WITHOUT lock up or 'pushing/jerking' is the setting you want to use as your 'loaded' setting. If you cant find a good Boost setting, adjust your Gain up or down a little and test again. Keep going until you have a good smooth stop with both an empty trailer and no Boost, and loaded trailer with Boost. Heres the 'manual', such as it is: http://www.draw-tite.com/support/installation/N5535.pdf

CURT 51140 TriFlex Electric Trailer Brake Controller, Proportional

CURT

Based on 427 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The TriFlex proportion-based brake controller features a compact size, a digital display and the ability to manage up to eight brakes at a time. The feature that sets the TriFlex apart from many others is its triple-axis motion-sensing accelerometer. This integrated circuit component allows the TriFlex to detect every motion of your vehicle and trailer with exact precision and to then apply the perfect amount of braking power for every situation. The TriFlex also automatically adjusts brake output when going up or down a hill and is compatible with anti-lock brakes and cruise control. It comes with a mounting bracket and hardware and can be mounted at various angles on your vehicle's dash. Best of all, like other CURT brake controllers, the TriFlex is protected by a limited lifetime warranty. This CURT trailer brake controller is designed to work with quick plugs so it can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. It also includes a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. This way the control will not block your view when driving, but it will remain accessible and visible when adjustment is needed.

  • INTELLIGENT BRAKING. This trailer brake controller operates with an integrated circuit called a triple-axis accelerometer. This circuit detects motion on three planes and provides braking power accordingly, up or down a hill
  • EASY ADJUSTMENT. The TriFlex brake controller is highly adjustable to accommodate different vehicles, trailers and loads. It provides 9 levels of sensitivity adjustment and features driver-selectable power output and manual activation
  • COMPACT DESIGN. This electric brake controller has a sleek, subtle design to avoid dominating the dash of your vehicle. It measures only 3-1/4 inches x 4 inches x 7/8 inches. The TriFlex perfectly balances a compact design with powerful operation
  • VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). It is also fully compatible with cruise control, anti-lock brakes, low-voltage systems and PWM systems
  • SIMPLE SETUP. Installing and setting up the TriFlex trailer brake controller is fast and easy. It can be plugged into your vehicle in minutes using a vehicle-specific quick plug harness (sold separately). It also has automatic leveling and calibration

User questions & answers

Question: What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x
Answer: it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it.
Question: I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so
Answer: Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring.
Question: Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to
Answer: Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues.
Question: is this unit "proportional" or "timed
Answer: It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it.

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers

CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.

All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.

For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.

Two types of brake controllers:

CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.

Inertia-based

Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.

Time-based

Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.

Heavy-duty towing

If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.

Light-duty towing

If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.

Frequent towing

If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.

Occasional towing

If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy the pigtail for it to fit my 06dodge ram
Answer: Just type in your 2002 Suburban and Amazon will put the one you need right there. That is what I did and it was perfect plugged right in. Easy as that
Question: Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time
Answer: After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info.
Question: What is the dimensions of this unit (height, width, length front to back
Answer: Yes, it has a knob on top and a sensitivity bottom on side. The unit will also automatically sense if you need more trailer braking on emergency stops. If you have it set on 3.0 and you are only using 2.2 , it will automatically go to 3.0 if needed. It is a nice unit. Pulling 20 ft. Enclosed with Chevy Duramax.
Question: Why does Amazon say it won't fit my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK, aren't they all fairly universal? Or is it just because I don't have a factory harness
Answer: Proportional..the internal 'tri axis' sensor varies the intensity of electrical brake output dependent on vehicle motion.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work with adaptive cruise control
Answer: The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon.
Question: I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug
Answer: When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have
Question: Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same
Answer: John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway.
Question: For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees
Answer: You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller.
