12 best trailer brake controls

Trailer brake controls, also known as trailer brake controllers or trailer brake systems, are devices used in automotive applications to manage and control the brakes on a trailer that is being towed behind a vehicle. These controls are an essential component of safe trailer operation, particularly for heavy loads or large trailers. Here's what you need to know about trailer brake controls:

  1. Purpose: Trailer brake controls are designed to allow the driver of the towing vehicle to apply and control the brakes on the trailer independently of the towing vehicle's brakes. This is important for maintaining stability and control while towing heavy loads.

  2. Types of Trailer Brake Controls:

    • Time-Based Controls: These controllers apply the trailer brakes with a preset amount of delay after the towing vehicle's brakes are applied. The delay can be adjusted to suit the specific towing setup.
    • Proportional Controls: Proportional or inertia-based controllers sense the deceleration of the towing vehicle and apply the trailer brakes in proportion to that deceleration. This provides a smoother and more responsive braking experience, especially when towing heavy loads.
  3. Installation: Trailer brake controls need to be installed in the towing vehicle's cabin. They typically consist of a control unit, a user interface (often a knob or lever), and a connection to the trailer's braking system. Proper installation is critical to ensure effective and safe braking.

  4. Wiring: Wiring is essential for connecting the trailer brake control to the vehicle's electrical system and the trailer's brakes. This includes connections to the brake pedal switch, the trailer's brake wiring, and power from the vehicle's electrical system.

  5. Brake Actuators: The trailer brake control unit communicates with the trailer's brake actuators or brake drums to activate the brakes. These actuators can be electric or hydraulic, depending on the type of trailer and brake system.

  6. Adjustability: Most trailer brake controls offer adjustable settings to fine-tune the braking force applied to the trailer. This allows drivers to adapt the braking to different trailer weights and road conditions.

  7. Safety: Properly functioning trailer brake controls contribute significantly to safe towing. They help prevent issues like trailer sway, reduce stress on the towing vehicle's brakes, and improve overall stopping distance.

  8. Compatibility: When selecting a trailer brake control, it's important to ensure compatibility with the towing vehicle and trailer brake system. Different trailers may require specific types of controls, so it's essential to consult the manufacturer's guidelines.

  9. Legal Requirements: In some regions, trailer brake controls are required by law, particularly for trailers with certain weight capacities. Compliance with these regulations is crucial to ensure safe and legal towing.

  10. Maintenance: Regular maintenance and testing of the trailer brake control system are important for its reliable operation. This includes checking for loose connections, proper function, and brake system integrity.

Trailer brake controls play a critical role in towing safety, allowing drivers to have better control over their trailers and promote safe braking, especially when handling heavy or large loads. Proper installation and maintenance are essential to ensure their effectiveness and safety while on the road.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy the pigtail for it to fit my 06dodge ram
Answer: Just type in your 2002 Suburban and Amazon will put the one you need right there. That is what I did and it was perfect plugged right in. Easy as that
Question: Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time
Answer: After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info.
Question: What is the dimensions of this unit (height, width, length front to back
Answer: Yes, it has a knob on top and a sensitivity bottom on side. The unit will also automatically sense if you need more trailer braking on emergency stops. If you have it set on 3.0 and you are only using 2.2 , it will automatically go to 3.0 if needed. It is a nice unit. Pulling 20 ft. Enclosed with Chevy Duramax.
Question: Why does Amazon say it won't fit my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK, aren't they all fairly universal? Or is it just because I don't have a factory harness
Answer: Proportional..the internal 'tri axis' sensor varies the intensity of electrical brake output dependent on vehicle motion.

Question: will this work on 2018 Silverado
Answer: The LED lights stay on all the time.
Question: Will it work on a 2018 dodge 3500 heavy duty
Answer: Height is about 1 inch. Width is 2.75 inches. Length is 4.0 inches. The wire pig tail sticks out the back. With the bracket, the height is 1.5 inches and 3.0 inches wide and the length is unchanged.
Question: does it come with a mounting bracket
Answer: It should. They are only two kinds. You do need an additional harness to connect the unit to your factory wiring. Amazon did the same thing with my Tacoma, even though it was the ONLY controller that fit. I love it and it's very compact. It should be a good fit for your Jeep.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt
Answer: The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only.
Question: According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time
Answer: You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin.
Question: do the brakes engage when backing up
Answer: Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind.
Question: does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system
Answer: No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine.

Question: Does this work with adaptive cruise control
Answer: The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. Answer: When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have
Question: Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same
Answer: John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway.
Question: For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees
Answer: You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller.

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers

CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.

All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.

For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.

Two types of brake controllers:

CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.

Inertia-based

Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.

Time-based

Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.

Heavy-duty towing

If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.

Light-duty towing

If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.

Frequent towing

If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.

Occasional towing

If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

Question: It says that this will not fit my 2015 4Runner. Why not? Can i purchase something to make it work
Answer: Kali The 47297 will work on your 2015 4Runner but you will need harness number 47815 to plug it into your vehicle. If you have any more questions please call 1-800-470-2287 Monday-Friday, 8-5 central time. Thanks
Question: Is this a plug and play unit for a 2006 f250, or do i need to purchase a wire/adapter kit
Answer: I put it in a 1999 GMC and purchased the adapter and pluged it in and ran a a hot wire to the battery which is recommended. My brother in law bought the adapter for his 04 F250 so yes you need to get the, adapter for your model and then it is plug and play except for the hot wire.
Question: do you need another plug? there are bare wires I don't know what to do with. I have a 2004 tundra
Answer: You should be able to purchase a towing harness from your local Toyota dealership. This will plug into the vehicle harness in your truck and will wire to your new brake controller.
Question: How to Adjust brake control to match trailer
Answer: On my controller, I have a + and - button and a red button. What I did was pull my trailer to about 25 mph then applied the red button, which works just the trailer brakes. The first time, it locked up the trailer brakes. Then I hit the - button and tried again. I did this until the brakes wouldn't lock up. Then I started using the truck brakes, and adjusting the trailer brakes, using the + &- buttons on the controller, until I could feel the trailer brakes applying with the same amount of force as the truck brakes. This took a little trial and error, but if you take your time it can be done. Hope this helps.

CURT 51120 Discovery Electric Trailer Brake Controller, Time-Delay

CURT

Product description

It takes a lot of power to stop a moving trailer, especially when that trailer is hauling a heavy load. On RVs, flatbeds, livestock trailers and many other oversize haulers, manufacturers typically install trailer brakes to assist the tow vehicle in bringing such a massive amount of weight to a halt. But it takes more than a good set of brakes to make quick, efficient stops. It takes precision and the right amount of control. Discovery is a time-based brake controller, meaning it applies increasing brake pressure the longer your foot is on the brake pedal. This pressure is based on the gain setting and sensitivity adjustment set by the user. Discovery has a digital display for easy monitoring and the ability to manage up to four axles at a time. It mounts at any angle, anywhere in your vehicle and comes with an automatic power level adjustment feature to ensure you can stay better focused on your driving and spend less time worry about your trailer brakes. All CURT brake controls are designed to work with quick plugs so that they can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. They also include a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. This way the control will not block your view when driving, but it will remain accessible and visible when adjustment is needed.

  • RELIABLE SAFETY. The Discovery electric trailer brake controller offers safe, dependable operation, increasing trailer brake pressure as you depress the vehicle brake pedal and bringing the vehicle and trailer to a smooth stop
  • EASY TO USE. This trailer brake controller features an easy-to-read, digital display to monitor brake operation. It also has a simple, reliable design with no internal moving parts and no leveling required
  • POWERFUL. The simple controls of the Discovery brake controller enable powerful brake operation, featuring a manual brake slider button, an adjustable power toggle and adjustable ramp time
  • VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). Compatible with low-volt, PWM, ABS, cruise control and electric over hydraulic
  • SIMPLE SETUP. This electric brake controller quickly plugs into your vehicle using a CURT vehicle-specific quick plug harness (sold separately). It comes with an adjustable mounting bracket and can be mounted at any angle

Question: Does this controller work on 1994 Chevrolet Silverado
Answer: It will work, if you do the work of wiring it all in. 1994 Chevrolet Silverado doesn't have a plug and go harness to my knowledge. Mine started in my 1999 dodge 1500 that i had to wire in. Later transferred to my 2007 Durango with a pigtail. Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this tekonsha 3040 2-plug brake control wiring adapter fit my 2008 toyota tundra
Answer: The vehicle make or type doesn't matter, the included remote pairs with the controller as long as both have 12 volt power. It can be used with any tow vehicle at that point. You may need a kit to add a seven pin trailer plug for your vehicle and include a 12v power supply and a ground in that, but not a brake sensor wire as this kit takes care of that. I used this set up in a 2010 BMW X5 diesel.
Question: Will it fit 2009 tacoma
Answer: Yes it does, two different mounting brackets are supplied. It is a great unit...
Question: I google trailer brake adapter for 2014 Toyota Tundra and it brings me here, but then says it wont fit.. Will it fit
Answer: I ordered mine with a harness, but it does come with a generic that can be used also. I spoke to the seller at time of order to verify that they gave me the right harness
Question: Will this work on a 2004 tundra
Answer: Yes it a plug and play..
