12 best hoppy brake controls

Hoppy brake controls, also known as Hopkins brake controls, are automotive accessories designed to improve the efficiency and safety of trailer braking systems. These devices are essential for towing trailers, as they allow the driver to control the trailer's brakes independently from the vehicle's brakes. Here's what you need to know about Hoppy brake controls:

  1. Purpose: Hoppy brake controls are used to manage the braking force applied to a trailer while towing. They help prevent trailer sway, ensure smoother stops, and enhance overall towing safety.

  2. Types: There are various types of Hoppy brake controls available, including time-delayed and proportional brake controllers.

    • Time-Delayed Brake Controllers: These controllers apply a preset amount of braking force to the trailer after a predetermined delay. The delay can typically be adjusted to suit different towing conditions.

    • Proportional Brake Controllers: Proportional controllers, also known as inertia-based controllers, apply the trailer brakes in proportion to the deceleration of the towing vehicle. This means that as the vehicle slows down, the trailer brakes are applied gradually and proportionally.

  3. Installation: Hoppy brake controls need to be installed in the towing vehicle. This typically involves mounting the control unit within the driver's reach, connecting it to the vehicle's electrical system, and connecting the wiring to the trailer's braking system. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and any applicable local regulations during installation.

  4. Adjustability: These brake controllers often come with adjustment options to fine-tune the braking force and delay to match the specific towing situation, load, and road conditions.

  5. Compatibility: It's crucial to ensure that the Hoppy brake control you choose is compatible with your towing vehicle and trailer setup. Different controllers may have different compatibility requirements and maximum load capacities.

  6. Safety: Properly functioning brake controls are critical for safe towing. They help maintain control of the trailer, reduce wear on the vehicle's brakes, and minimize the risk of accidents caused by inadequate trailer braking.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the brake controller is essential to ensure its continued reliability. This may include checking connections, cleaning the unit, and testing the brakes periodically.

Hoppy is a well-known brand in the trailer accessories industry, and their brake controls are trusted by many trailer owners and towing enthusiasts. When selecting a Hoppy brake control, it's important to consider your towing needs and the specific features of the controller to ensure it meets your requirements for safety and performance.

Question: Does this work with adaptive cruise control
Answer: The unit will fit, but you need to check to see what cable is correct for your Toyota. The cable will attach to the controller, and connect it to a trailer brake port usually found under the dash of your rig. The Tekonsha site has a tool that will help you determine what connector you need for your vehicle. Then you can order the connector cable on Amazon.
Question: I have a 4 way plug spliced into a 7 way plug that does my lights etc for what will be my brake pin csn i run a live 12 volt feed to plug
Answer: When your order it you put in what kind of vehicle you have
Question: Is it possible to use in a rental environment, where each user downloads the app for a rental, uses the receiver and then the next user does the same
Answer: John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway.
Question: For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees
Answer: You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt
Answer: The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only.
Question: According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time
Answer: You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin.
Question: do the brakes engage when backing up
Answer: Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind.
Question: does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system
Answer: No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy the pigtail for it to fit my 06dodge ram
Answer: Just type in your 2002 Suburban and Amazon will put the one you need right there. That is what I did and it was perfect plugged right in. Easy as that
Question: Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time
Answer: After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info.
Question: What is the dimensions of this unit (height, width, length front to back
Answer: Yes, it has a knob on top and a sensitivity bottom on side. The unit will also automatically sense if you need more trailer braking on emergency stops. If you have it set on 3.0 and you are only using 2.2 , it will automatically go to 3.0 if needed. It is a nice unit. Pulling 20 ft. Enclosed with Chevy Duramax.
Question: Why does Amazon say it won't fit my 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK, aren't they all fairly universal? Or is it just because I don't have a factory harness
Answer: Proportional..the internal 'tri axis' sensor varies the intensity of electrical brake output dependent on vehicle motion.

User questions & answers

Question: How long is the warranty
Answer: No this is not plug and play on a 1995 GM full sized truck. If the truck is equipped with a factory tow haul package then it should have trailer brake wiring taped back on the harness coming from the fuse block on the drivers fender and there’s also wiring taped back at the rear driver side of the frame. If it’s not there then you will have to wire the entire length of the truck.
Question: What does this unit come with
Answer: I think so it worked great on 2016 Silverado with the Tekonsha adapter. Plugged right in.
Question: Does this connect to 2021 dodger Ram or do I need to purchase a wiring adapter? Thanks
Answer: your truck should come with a built in break controller. mine did, it would be located above the buttons to turn off your rear view camera
Question: I have a 94 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins will it work with it
Answer: My package was damaged on arrival and no mounting bracket but the paperwork included states that there should have been.

Product description

The REESE Towpower Brakeman IV is a smart electric brake controller that mounts in any direction with no leveling required. Its small, compact design and pre-wired plug-and-play feature allow for quick and easy connection to 2-, 4-, 6- and 8- brake systems. This 100% solid-state electronic includes two separate easy push-button adjustment controls (output and sync) that allow for not only different trailer weights (output) but also the speed of activation (sync) depending on your driving style. For easy-reading, the bright and prominent digital display clearly indicates the output setting, sync setting, brake overload or short connection. Smoother braking starts with a sensing device that determines the voltage power being delivered to the towing vehicle’s brakes and assists in accurately adjusting the trailer brakes for city or highway driving. User questions & answers

Question: Will this plug and play on a 1995 gmc sierra
Answer: Yes, they are a separate purchase, vehicle dependent, for my silverado it was $15
Question: will this work on 2018 Silverado
Answer: The LED lights stay on all the time.
Question: Will it work on a 2018 dodge 3500 heavy duty
Answer: Height is about 1 inch. Width is 2.75 inches. Length is 4.0 inches. The wire pig tail sticks out the back. With the bracket, the height is 1.5 inches and 3.0 inches wide and the length is unchanged.
Question: does it come with a mounting bracket
Answer: It should. They are only two kinds. You do need an additional harness to connect the unit to your factory wiring. Amazon did the same thing with my Tacoma, even though it was the ONLY controller that fit. I love it and it's very compact. It should be a good fit for your Jeep.
