12 best hoppy brake controllers
Hoppy brake controllers are a type of trailer brake controller used in towing applications to control the brakes on a trailer. These controllers are designed to help drivers safely and effectively manage the braking system of their towed trailers, promoting better control and reducing the risk of accidents. Here are some key points about hoppy brake controllers:
Function: Hoppy brake controllers are an essential part of a trailer's braking system. They allow the driver to apply the trailer brakes independently of the vehicle's brakes, which is crucial for maintaining stability and preventing swaying or jackknifing during towing.
Types: Hoppy brake controllers come in various types, including time-delayed controllers and proportional controllers. Time-delayed controllers apply a preset level of braking force after a delay, while proportional controllers adjust the braking force based on the vehicle's deceleration. Proportional controllers are generally considered more advanced and provide smoother and more precise control.
Installation: These controllers are typically mounted inside the towing vehicle's cabin and are connected to the trailer's braking system. Installation involves wiring the controller to the vehicle's electrical system and adjusting settings to match the trailer's weight and braking needs.
Adjustability: Hoppy brake controllers offer adjustability options, allowing drivers to fine-tune the level of braking force applied to the trailer. This customization ensures that the trailer's brakes are synchronized with the towing vehicle's braking system.
Safety: Using a hoppy brake controller enhances towing safety by helping to prevent accidents caused by trailer sway or uncontrolled braking. When set up correctly, they contribute to better stability and control, especially when towing heavy loads.
Compatibility: It's essential to choose a hoppy brake controller that is compatible with your specific vehicle and trailer setup. Different controllers may have different compatibility requirements, so consult your vehicle and trailer manuals for guidance.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of hoppy brake controllers. This includes checking and adjusting the settings as needed, inspecting the wiring for damage, and verifying that all connections are secure.
Legal Requirements: Depending on your location, there may be legal requirements regarding the use of trailer brake controllers, particularly for trailers of a certain weight or size. Always ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.
In summary, hoppy brake controllers are essential components in towing setups, helping drivers control the trailer's brakes for safe and efficient towing. They come in various types, offer adjustability, and require proper installation and maintenance to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Question: | Do I need to buy the pigtail for it to fit my 06dodge ram |
Answer: | Just type in your 2002 Suburban and Amazon will put the one you need right there. That is what I did and it was perfect plugged right in. Easy as that |
Question: | Is there an off and on switch or does LED indicator stay on all the time |
Answer: | After 2006, Chevrolet stopped putting a terminal connector on the wire harness for the brake controller. Curt makes a “universal” harness connector that you can use to connect the controller to the truck harness. It is really very easy. Check YouTube for a video. I’m sure someone has done a video for your truck. Sorry, I don’t know the Curt part number for that universal harness but it is less than $10. I bet Amazon will List this harness as an add on if you go to the purchase page for the controller. Be sure to specify your truck info. |
Question: | What is the dimensions of this unit (height, width, length front to back |

Answer: | John, it will work. I guess you are saying if you are installing this in. I just use it and it work great. I call Tekonsha tech support with question. Since my truck does not have the plug. I had to hard wire my own plug that came with the kit. One wire I did not have to use. Out of the five wires I only had to use 4 of them. The lady email me instruction for my 2008 Chevy 1500. She is very helpful. I tow a toy hauler with two motorcycle. Three setting plus to go to manual setting which I like. Plus there is a button on the right that I use like a trolly brake. (Use to drive a tractor). With that button, slowly pushing on it, I was using just the trailer to stop me or to straighten out the trailer if it sway. |
Question: | For the accelerometer to work properly, does the unit have to be installed in a certain orientation? Promaster 7 way connector is rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | You need to get the wire harness for your make of vehicle. The adaptor harnesses are on the Amazon page for the Controller. They are less than $15.00. This is a good controller. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this fit a 2013 ram 3500 slt |
Answer: | The CURT applies trailer brakes in accordance with vehicle deceleration. Built in accelerometers sense deceleration and apply trailer brakes according to the amount of deceleration. Small speed changes, letting off the gas etc, may not be enough to actuate trailer brakes. I have used cruise control, normal, with no interference or tugging from trailer brakes as speed is increased and decreased by the cruise control. This is based on my use experience only. |
Question: | According to the wiring diagrams the controller is powered directly from the battery. Is the unit then powered all the time |
Answer: | You would need to run a 12 volt 30-40 amp fused auxillary feed and a 30-40 amp ground line to the 7pin. |
Question: | do the brakes engage when backing up |
Answer: | Yes. Since Echo is not hardwired to a singular vehicle, it can be used in that environment. Note: the current product warranty does not cover commercial use, so keep that in mind. |
Question: | does this come with any plut/pigtail for wiring into vehicle system |
Answer: | No, my tacoma’s 7-pin is rotated 90° clockwise and it works fine. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this plug n play? Doesn’t the computer need to be flashed |
Answer: | It is plug and play as long as your truck came with a tow package from the factory. There should be a wiring harness taped next to your ODBII port or possibly up behind the cubby box that the trailer brake control module goes in.. Its pretty easy to flash the computer yourself too. You will need a laptop with free software called FORScan, as well as a USB or bluetooth FORScan compatible ODBII adapter. It took me about an hour to install and flash after watching Youtube videos on how to do it. |
Product description
The TriFlex proportion-based brake controller features a compact size, a digital display and the ability to manage up to eight brakes at a time. The feature that sets the TriFlex apart from many others is its triple-axis motion-sensing accelerometer. This integrated circuit component allows the TriFlex to detect every motion of your vehicle and trailer with exact precision and to then apply the perfect amount of braking power for every situation. The TriFlex also automatically adjusts brake output when going up or down a hill and is compatible with anti-lock brakes and cruise control. It comes with a mounting bracket and hardware and can be mounted at various angles on your vehicle's dash. Best of all, like other CURT brake controllers, the TriFlex is protected by a limited lifetime warranty. This CURT trailer brake controller is designed to work with quick plugs so it can readily plug into your vehicle's original equipment socket. It also includes a mounting bracket and hardware for easy installation. A brake controller should be mounted somewhere on the dash of your vehicle, and we recommend putting it below the steering wheel, either on the right or left side of the steering column. This way the control will not block your view when driving, but it will remain accessible and visible when adjustment is needed.
- INTELLIGENT BRAKING. This trailer brake controller operates with an integrated circuit called a triple-axis accelerometer. This circuit detects motion on three planes and provides braking power accordingly, up or down a hill
- EASY ADJUSTMENT. The TriFlex brake controller is highly adjustable to accommodate different vehicles, trailers and loads. It provides 9 levels of sensitivity adjustment and features driver-selectable power output and manual activation
- COMPACT DESIGN. This electric brake controller has a sleek, subtle design to avoid dominating the dash of your vehicle. It measures only 3-1/4 inches x 4 inches x 7/8 inches. The TriFlex perfectly balances a compact design with powerful operation
- VERSATILE. You can use this electric trailer brake controller on virtually any trailer with 1 to 4 axles (2 to 8 brakes). It is also fully compatible with cruise control, anti-lock brakes, low-voltage systems and PWM systems
- SIMPLE SETUP. Installing and setting up the TriFlex trailer brake controller is fast and easy. It can be plugged into your vehicle in minutes using a vehicle-specific quick plug harness (sold separately). It also has automatic leveling and calibration
User questions & answers
Question: | What adapter cable is required for a 2002 Suburban 3.5l 4x |
Answer: | it's not so much an issue of fitting as much as making sure you get the right wiring harness for your truck which is normally sold separate from this unit. So just do a search for your trucks harness. You can even go to the manufacturers website and look up the right harness model number then search for it on Amazon. Great unit you'll love it. |
Question: | I have a 2013 silverado 1500 lt. has factory towing package. do i need an additional harness? how do i found out which one if so |
Answer: | Manufacture states power draw is so low (3.6 milliamps when not in use) that it would take 3-4 months to drain battery if allowed to sit without starting. Then would be the time they would recommend disconnecting unit from vehicle wiring. |
Question: | Does it have a digital read out to tell you what degree it's currently adjusted to |
Answer: | Most electric brakes will not "engage" when driving in reverse. The magnets will still grab, yes, but the camming action that forces the shoes to the drums is reversed and thus should not cause any issues. |
Question: | is this unit "proportional" or "timed |
Answer: | It comes with a pigtail that plugs into back of unit and stranded wires on the other end to hook up to the car. If you have a newer vehicle that is prewired for electric brakes, you can purchase a pigtail to plug into the prewired side plug. My vehicle came with that pigtail in the glove box when I bought it. |

CURT Electrical Trailer Brake Controllers
CURT offers several different trailer brake controller models to provide you with a solution that fits your unique towing setup and budget. We carry time-based and inertia-based or proportional brake controllers.
All CURT trailer brake controllers are designed for easy installation. Most use our quick plug harnesses, and each comes with its own set of features and benefits.
For a helpful guide in selecting a brake controller, see below.
Two types of brake controllers:
CURT electric brake controllers fall into one of two categories: inertia-based or time-based. These refer to the method of activation used by the brake controller. Both types are safe and effective for stopping a trailer. However, depending on your needs, one may be preferred over the other.
Inertia-based
Inertia-based or proportional trailer brake controllers use an electronic mechanism, called an accelerometer, to detect the momentum of the vehicle-trailer combination while braking. The controller accentuates the trailer brakes in proportion to the momentum, allowing for a smooth, highly efficient stop.
Time-based
Time-based activation is less complex than inertia-based. When stopping, a time-based brake controller accentuates the trailer brakes based on whatever gain setting is input by the driver. Although simple in operation, time-based trailer brake controllers are effective and provide a more budget-friendly option.
Heavy-duty towing
If you are towing a heavy trailer or cargo, an inertia-based brake controller will provide superior control to make smoother stops and to put less strain on your vehicle.
Light-duty towing
If you’re towing a simple boat trailer or popup camper, a time-based trailer brake controller may be sufficient. CURT time-based controllers are easily adjustable for varying loads.
Frequent towing
If you’re planning to tow often, an inertia-based brake controller is recommended. The sophisticated operation will help prolong the life of your vehicle and trailer.
Occasional towing
If you only plan to tow a few times a year, such as for family camping trips during the summer, a time-based brake controller is an effective and budget-conscious option.

User questions & answers
Question: | My 2001 tundra did not come with a tow package and there is no underdash plug for a brake controller. do the instructions give me wiring information |
Answer: | Stan,Yes they give you instructions. The controler comes with a wire harness, a connector is on the end of it that you might want to remove and use the wire ends. You probably could order and adapter plug for the Tundra but running the wires yourself will save money. The Hopkins 47185 Multi-Tow Adapter $20.27 has all the wire connections for the rear already prewired. You will need to run 2 12 guage wires from the connector in the rear, one to the controler (Blue) for the Brakes and one to the battery for 12 Volt power to connector if you think you need it back there (RED). Also a 12 guage wire from the battery to the controler (RED). The controler has 4 wires coming from it. 12V Power (RED), Ground (WHITE), Brake wire (BLUE) and a wire (BLACK) that connects under the dash to the stoplite switch at the brake pedal. The ground wire may be long enough, but the rest need to be extended. Use the proper guage wires. The multi tow adapter has all the wires you need to hook up the Tail and Right and Left turn signals, but they to are in a 4 pin plug that is of no use. Cut it off and extend the wires you need to the tail lights. You will need Hopkins 48615 Mounting Bracket $4.98 also. You might need to get a repair manual from Auto Zone to find the correct wires under the dash by the brake and for the Tail and Turn Signals. Hope this helps.Mike |
Question: | Will this plug directly into my 2013 Tacoma |
Answer: | If you purchased your Tacoma with a Tow Package there will be a pigtail with a connector on it on the Driver side behind the cover next to the emergency brake. You may need the dealer to find it. You should have gotten a wired pigtail that would have been in the glove box that has an adapter on it to plug into the wired pigtail, if not you will need to purchase that also. That a pigtail will wire directly to the pigtail on the controller and that one will plug into the one on the truck. Make sure you know where to mount the controller so you can make the wires long enough. If you purchase a Tacoma without the Tow package you should get the dealer or an auto shop to wire it in. |
Question: | will the reese wiring adapter 78124 work with this model on a 2011 ford f |
Answer: | If you have the factory Ford pigtail for the brake controller, you don't need anything else , it wires right up. |
Question: | Do i need wiring harness for my 2011 nissan titan or does it come with everything i need |
Answer: | If your Titan came with a tow package there should be a connector somewhere under the dash. Have the dealer locate it for you. When you order the controler order the harness for that 2011 truck so it will plug into the one provided on the truck. You will have to splice the harnes to the wires coming from the controler. If the Titan didn't come with a tow package you will have additional wiring to do. |
