12 best hayes brake controllers

Hayes brake controllers are essential components used in towing setups to control the braking of trailers, ensuring safe and efficient stopping when towing heavy loads. These controllers are a critical part of the braking system for vehicles with trailers and are commonly used for various types of trailers, including utility trailers, camper trailers, and horse trailers. Here are some key points about Hayes brake controllers:

  1. Function: Hayes brake controllers are electronic devices designed to manage and regulate the brakes on a trailer. They work by sending signals to the trailer's brakes to engage them when the driver applies the vehicle's brakes.

  2. Proportional vs. Time-Delay Controllers: Hayes offers both proportional and time-delay brake controllers. Proportional controllers provide a braking force that is proportional to the vehicle's braking, offering smoother and more precise control. Time-delay controllers, on the other hand, apply a preset amount of braking force with a delay after the vehicle's brakes are engaged.

  3. Installation: Brake controllers like those from Hayes are typically mounted in the vehicle's cabin, usually within reach of the driver. Installation involves connecting the controller to the vehicle's electrical system and brake pedal and wiring it to the trailer's brake system.

  4. Adjustability: Hayes brake controllers often come with adjustable settings, allowing users to fine-tune the braking force applied to the trailer to match the load and road conditions. This adjustability helps optimize braking performance.

  5. Compatibility: Hayes brake controllers are designed to work with various trailer types and sizes. They can be used with trailers equipped with electric brakes, which are common in many towing applications.

  6. Safety: Properly functioning brake controllers are crucial for safe towing. They help prevent trailer sway, reduce stopping distances, and ensure that the trailer's brakes do not lock up, improving overall towing safety.

  7. Emergency Braking: In the event of an emergency stop or sudden braking, Hayes brake controllers ensure that the trailer's brakes are applied simultaneously with the tow vehicle's brakes, helping maintain control and stability.

  8. LED Displays: Some Hayes brake controllers feature LED displays that provide real-time information about braking force, voltage, and diagnostics, making it easier for users to monitor the system's performance.

  9. Compatibility with Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS): Many modern vehicles are equipped with ABS. Hayes brake controllers are designed to work seamlessly with ABS systems, ensuring coordinated and effective braking.

Overall, Hayes brake controllers are essential tools for safe and controlled towing. They allow drivers to have precise control over their trailer's brakes, promoting safety on the road and reducing the risk of accidents while towing heavy loads.

Question: Does it come with a harness? If not what fits? My truck is 22 ft long
Answer: If it is a newer truck you should be able to wire it to the dash elec brake port. However I have had three of these and they seem to fail within a year or two. I just replaced the last one with a Kelsey controller recommended by my local trailer shop. it has some better features and does not have the pendulum adjuster which is pretty lame. It also has a adjustable "boost feature".
Question: I just purchased this controller. and harness for a 2003 chevy avalanche 1500 the harness first my truck but does not fit this controller
