9 best leather preservatives
Leather preservatives play a crucial role in leather care, whether it's for automotive interiors or other leather products. These products are designed to protect and maintain the quality of leather, ensuring it remains supple, attractive, and durable over time. Here are some key points about leather preservatives:
Protection from Moisture: Leather can be damaged by moisture, which may lead to mold, mildew, and rot. Leather preservatives often contain water-repellent properties to prevent moisture from penetrating the material.
UV Protection: Exposure to sunlight can cause leather to fade and become brittle. Many leather preservatives contain UV inhibitors that shield the leather from harmful UV rays.
Softening and Conditioning: Leather preservatives often include ingredients that soften and condition the leather. This keeps it pliable and prevents it from drying out and cracking.
Restoration: Some leather preservatives are formulated to restore older, worn leather items by replenishing lost oils and rejuvenating the material's appearance.
Stain and Spill Resistance: Leather is susceptible to stains and spills. Leather preservatives can create a barrier that makes it easier to wipe away spills and stains before they set in.
Types of Leather: Different leather preservatives may be recommended for specific types of leather, such as full-grain, top-grain, or synthetic leather. It's essential to choose a product that is compatible with the type of leather you are treating.
Application: Leather preservatives come in various forms, including creams, lotions, sprays, and wipes. The method of application can vary, so follow the product's instructions for best results.
Frequency of Application: How often you should apply a leather preservative depends on factors like usage, exposure to the elements, and the product's recommendations. In general, it's a good idea to reapply the preservative periodically to maintain leather quality.
Color Maintenance: Some leather preservatives come in various shades to help restore or enhance the color of your leather. Choose a product that matches or complements the leather's original color.
Testing: It's advisable to test any leather preservative on a small, inconspicuous area of the leather first to ensure it doesn't cause any adverse effects, such as discoloration.
Odor: Some leather preservatives may have a distinct odor that can linger for a short time. If you're sensitive to smells, consider this when choosing a product.
Cleaning Preparations: Leather preservatives work best on clean surfaces, so it's often recommended to clean your leather items before applying the preservative.
Keep in mind that the effectiveness of leather preservatives may vary from one product to another, and the specific needs of your leather items should guide your choice. Regular care and maintenance with leather preservatives can extend the life of your leather goods and help them look their best.

The Only Natural Industrial Strength Leather Protection
Heavy Duty LP provides a natural barrier against destructive substances and reinforces leather fibers against scuffing. Due to the Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula, a little goes a long way. It waterproofs naturally, while still allowing the leather to breathe. With regular application, people are getting years of wear out of their leather boots!
Leather Care, Conditioning, and Reproofing
Not just for boots, Obenauf’s leather preservative (lp), is widely used to condition leather saddle bags, chaps, tack, holsters, sheathes, baseball gloves, as well as motorcycle and auto leather. More than a leather conditioner, use Heavy Duty LP as a wax waterproofing. Apply with a low heat blow dryer to reproof your cotton oilskin dusters and hats. The natural ingredients of LP can also be applied to protect unfinished, natural wood furniture.
Originally Developed for Firefighters 30 Years Ago
An Idaho Wildland Firefighter developed this unique Beeswax/Propolis Suspension Formula to protect leather against caustic fire retardant chemicals, ash, heat, water, and abrasion. Natural oils are gradually released into the fibers as a long-term lubrication. Heat or continued flexing causes oils to be released faster. Leather gets oiled when and where it needs it most; while on the job!
Recommended Application
At room temperature, apply by hand as body temperature helps melt LP into leather. Two applications last longer in wet conditions. For absorption, allow ten minutes or up to one hour between treatments. On smooth leather, buff off excess with a clean cloth. On nubuck, use a soft bristled brush. One ounce should provide one application to a pair of tall boots. Apply every 6 to 8 weeks or as needed.

User questions & answers
Question: | If I use this on my sofa, will it stain my clothes |
Answer: | Soon as it drys i didnt even paint |
Question: | I have a "raw" unpolished,non-smooth untanned leather jacket. Light in color. What can I use to keep it conditioned |
Answer: | I'm sure it will kill the rust, but it will probably leave a paintable resin coating too as it does with most items, it probably won't preform miracles if that's what your asking, bad chrome is always going to be bad chrome, idk what your trying to achieve? |
Question: | Good for leather dress shoes |
Answer: | Good Question! Black Star converts all your rust into an inert black polymer resin(kinda like a hard plastic) that can be used as a primer for painting. Overspray that does not come into contact with rust will dry to a waxy film that should be washed off before top coating. However, if you're not repainting surface then you can leave the unconverted overspray on and the environment(rain, snow, wind) will cause it to degrade away. Thank you for your interest in Black Star ! |
Question: | Will this product work on leather couch and chairs |
Answer: | Q: What is the optimal temperature at which a Rust Converter should be applied A: Rust Converter should be applied when the air and surface temperature is between 50 and 100 degrees F. Do not apply in direct sunlight or in very damp conditions. |
Question: | How long before you can paint over this product |
Answer: | I would think paint thinner should work. It's been a while since I've applied my rust bullet on my frame. Great product! |
Question: | Can it be used on a chrome bumper that has rust coming through |
Answer: | It is not recommended to thin Rust Bullet Coatings. If you intend to spray with an HVLP, you can use a 2.0 tip. Rust Bullet is ready to use right from the can, and you would want to adjust your equipment as opposed to adjusting the coating. Once thinned, it in not the same formulation and will not work the same as when it was made. You can use Rust Bullet Solvent or Xylene for clean-up of equipment. |
Question: | Does this product have to be rinsed after applying before painted |
Answer: | All depends on what your painting. You could go on the cheap end and simply use rustoluem paints, or buy professional autobody primers and topcoats. I plan to topcoat with epoxy primer from a HVLP paint gun and then topcoat with the color I plan to paint the car i used the rust bullet on. I only used the paint on areas that are mostly hidden after final assembly, but want everything the same color. |
Question: | what is temperature range black star can be app |
Answer: | Rust Bullet only comes in silver but had a very durable white top coat. I have used both the black and red top coat and it is very durable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone used this on sheepskin leather garments? The manufacturer says to use only lanolin products on it |
Answer: | I wouldn't try it....if you elect to, use it in a discrete place.....I used it for leather and would purchase it again....good luck!!! |
Question: | I have a new Black leather jacket , but dried for keep long time , then this product is going to get the texture like a new |
Answer: | I had a leather jacket that was 11 years old and had gotten pretty dried out. I had to put a bottle and a half of this stuff on it, but now the jacket is like new and I wear it every chance I get. We live in Colorado, so things drying out is a way of life here, but this stuff really did the trick. I also had an old pair of work boots down at the ranch and they were pretty dried up, but I got this stuff to restore them to working order. They don't look that great due to wear and tear, but they are soft again. |
Question: | What's the difference between obenauf's leather oil vs their heavy duty lp (leather preserver)? i'm interested in a product for footwear |
Answer: | From the Obernauf's website:Use Heavy Duty LP for the strongest level of protection for work boots, horse & tack, belts, and baseball gloves, or any leather subjected to severe elements.Leather Oil is ideal for furniture, "breaking-in" new boots and for quick touch-ups between applications of Heavy Duty LP, dry weather and moderate conditions. |
Question: | Is Obenauft's oil safe for couches |
Answer: | Leather Oil can be used on leather furniture as long as you don't mind the darkening effect. It will hydrate and keep the leather supple. Some considerations: test in a hidden sport first to see if you like the results; & several light coats are better than one thick coat when applying to avoid saturation. One coat is usually all that is needed but if it still seems dry, try another coat after giving the first coat a few hours to soak in. Buff with a clean cloth after final application to remove excess oil. You can see actual photos of before and after Leather Oil applications to leather furniture at our Instagram account, obenaufs_lp. |

Rub Some Life Into Your Investment!
The oils in leather dissipate every day, especially inside a hot automobile. Use Obenauf’s Oil on leather car seats to keep them from scuffing easily and cracking prematurely. One coat of our leather preserving oil is often all you need. Buffing with a clean cloth after application removes excess oils and leaves a pleasant shine. Leather Oil will also improve the look of sun-bleached leather in cars, trucks, SUV’s, motorcycles, boats, RV’s and more. Do not apply to vinyl or other auto interiors other than leather.
Leather Preservative For Hot, Dry, Dusty Climates
Leather Oil is the best treatment for moderately wet and dry conditions. Often called the “Dry Season Oil”, it absorbs fast, conditioning your leather against dehydration and cracking. It is so effective, that one coat is all that’s needed for the thinner leather on riding boots, furniture, and gloves. Use leather oil for preserving saddles and tack during the long summer months.
Let It Breathe
Leather is a skin with pores that need to breathe. Like our skin, leather requires cleaning and moisturizing. Natural oils are best to keep fibers flexible and water resistant while allowing pores to breathe. Obenauf’s uses natural plant oil & beeswax which will allow your leather to breathe. The key to preserving and protecting your leather is to keep it natural.

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a pair of chaps would 32 ozs be enough for 1 coating |
Answer: | Effax leather balsam contains Lanolin, Avocado Oil & Beeswax, which are essential ingredients for the care and maintenance of saddles, bridles and leather riding products. Effax leather balsam has remarkable nutritive and protecting properties, which helps to keep the leather supple and gives it high tear resistance. This leather feed is particularly suited for smooth leather tack and saddlery but equally good for handbags or leather riding boots and any other smooth leather products. Simply apply with a sponge/cloth, rub and wipe off for a smooth, non sticky and supple finish. |
Question: | I've always applied with a natural sponge, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Is there an advantage to using a paint brush |
Answer: | you can use it on chrome tanned leather (the majority of leather these days) vegetable tanned (ie; harness leather) aniline leather which generally just refers to aniline dye. It is a softening treatment and will bring back old pretty worn out leather. I have been using it for more than 20 years with good results. A little goes a long way |
Question: | Does this oil waterproof as well as conditioning work boots |
Answer: | It really depends on how much you use, and the type of leather. Matte leather, with a thin coat/ thin use stayed matte for me, albeit a tad darker. "Shiny" leather like on pieces of a western saddle positively SHINES. If I used a lot on a matte leather, it would be super shiny too. Very little goes a looong way - but refrain from use on suede (unless its dire). Suede didn't like the stuff much. |
Question: | Hi! What is the difference between this product and Lexol conditioner? Both have very good reviews. I have leather furniture & leather car seats |
Answer: | This product can be applied to bridle leather and cordovan |
Product description
We all know the joys of a supple leather product, be it a shoe, a favorite sofa, or that inherited baseball mitt. That joy only increases over the years as leather gains character through regular use. Despite its inherent toughness, leather takes a battering over time. But aging doesn’t have to mean wearing out.
We have been researching and developing formulas to preserve leather’s natural elegance and hardiness since 1976. We have more than a 40-year R&D pedigree in the leather industry.
Care & Cool Leather Preservative’s wax formula does this by conditioning, waterproofing, and penetrating right to the pores for a durable finish. The result is a beautiful, clean look, as leather’s natural oils benefit from lasting protection. Treated items are also shielded against other harmful factors such as dust, salt, caustic chemicals, and abrasive wear and tear. And as your leather gets a shiny new lease on life, with no sticky residue, they won’t harm any items that come into contact with.
Our heavy-duty leather preservative is suitable for all leather objects ranging, among others, from boots and shoes,
to jackets,
belts,
wallets and purses,
sofas and other furniture,
car seats and interiors,
saddles, and that prized baseball mitt.
How to use LP
Always test a small hidden area before use as Care & Cool Leather Preservative may darken certain leathers.
Ensure the article is clean and dry before applying liberally by hand (or using a clean, dry cloth), particularly around seams and stitches.
Allow to dry for a few hours and then buff, repeating where necessary.
Note – Care & Cool Leather Preservative is not suitable for suede, nubuck, patent, faux and exotic leather (crocodile, etc.).
- WATERPROOFS For extended year-round protection against the elements, LP effectively waterproofs all leather products, including seams and stitches vulnerable to water. Tests in the USA show that LP leaves a notably stronger waterproof membrane on leather than any leading product.
- RESTORES and CONDITIONS Care & Cool Leather Preservative’s special wax formula restores leather by penetrating right to its pores, delivering a hardy finish. A heavy-duty protection of leather’s natural oils gives it that beautiful, clean appearance you look for in new and used leather. Condition and preserve your favorite leather products durably, while restoring them to their former glory.
- PROTECTS The durable finish provided by LP’s active ingredient shields against harmful factors such as dust, salt, caustic chemicals, and abrasion. The result is restored vitality and elasticity for a comprehensive range of leather products. Being compatible with human skin the user is also protected during application.
- NON-STICKY Unlike other products on the market LP’s clear and neutral cream works quickly and effectively for a durable finish, but without leaving a sticky surface. This ensures ready use of your treated leather items without risk to other objects that come into contact.
- SATISFACTION GUARANTEED For all leather types, there’s no better choice on the market than Care & Cool Leather Preservative. It protects new leather items, and restores, softens, and prolongs the life of your prized older ones. 100% guarantee of satisfaction, or your money back. We’ve put decades into making that promise.
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this safe to use on bibles |
Answer: | I don’t think so but I only use it on my motorcycle seat. I let it kinda sit and harden for around 24 hrs after application. So that may be a consideration. |
Question: | Will this darken light-colored leather |
Answer: | Just use a cleaner or conditioner.. If you use this product, it’ll darken your leather. |
Question: | Is this restorer safe to use over the gold leaf lettering / gilding on fine leather books |
Answer: | This is very, very heavy duty and won't shine well. For dress shoes, I recommend Bick 4 and then Gard-More for a good condition and waterproofing. |
Question: | I have read that creams for leather that contain Neatsfoot oil should not be used for leather books. What is your thought |
Answer: | This product is an industrial strength protector and is best used on leather work boots or horse tack. I would recommend Bick 5 instead. It is formulated specifically for conditioning leather furniture. |

Answer: | It says it is for this purpose and has very good reviews. I used it twice on two good quality leather bindings, about 40 years old. It behaved well --more supple and not oily afterward. Of course the real test is after a few more decades, and I don't know how that will turn out. |

Answer: | I only used it once since I received it and seems to work well not greasy lexol good for saddles only my opinion about twice a yr I use leatherqui it is a lot of work but the best on market espically for old leather hope this helps no expert but been fooling with this stuff for years tried most of it |
Question: | Can this be applied after using Lexol leather conditioner (which is a bit greasy |
Answer: | No I have not tried it on beige leather car seats. |
Question: | Has anyone tried this on beige leather car seats? Thanks in advance |
Answer: | Hi! Thanks for the question. Yes, it does provide the same level of UV protection as 303 Aerospace Protectant. The main differences are that 303 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner penetrates the leather and makes it more pliable, or soft. Also, it does not need the surface to be "prepped" and cleaned before the application. Hope this helps! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. |
Question: | Does this provide the same protection as the 303 Aerospace Protectant? Thanks |
Answer: | I have only used it on leather and leatherette, bleached out...….I would say No. |
