13 best serger machines

A serger, also known as an overlock machine, is a specialized sewing machine that is used to finish the edges of fabric to prevent fraying and create a neat, professional-looking seam. Here are some key points about serger machines:

  1. Overlocking Function: The primary purpose of a serger is to overlock the edges of fabric. It trims the fabric edges and encases them with thread, creating a secure and finished edge.

  2. Multiple Threads: Sergers typically use multiple threads simultaneously. Common configurations include 3-thread and 4-thread overlock stitches. The additional threads contribute to the strength and durability of the finished seam.

  3. Cutting Blade: Most sergers have a built-in cutting blade that trims the fabric as it sews. This eliminates the need for trimming fabric edges separately before or after sewing.

  4. Versatility: Sergers are versatile machines and can be used for various sewing tasks. They can create decorative edges, rolled hems, and flatlock seams, in addition to basic overlocking.

  5. Speed: Sergers are generally faster than regular sewing machines when it comes to finishing raw edges. This speed, coupled with the cutting function, makes them efficient for large sewing projects.

  6. Seam Finishing: Sergers are commonly used to finish seams on garments, preventing fraying and providing a clean and professional appearance on the inside of the garment.

  7. Differential Feed: Many sergers come equipped with a differential feed mechanism. This feature allows for the adjustment of the feeding of the upper and lower layers of fabric, which is particularly useful when working with stretchy or slippery fabrics.

  8. Threading Complexity: Sergers have multiple thread cones and loops, which can make them initially appear more complex to thread compared to a standard sewing machine. However, with practice, threading becomes more manageable.

  9. Specialized Needles and Threads: Sergers often require specific needles and threads. Understanding the correct type and size of needles and threads for your serger is important for achieving optimal results.

It's essential to consult the user manual that comes with the specific serger model you are using, as features can vary between machines. Additionally, practicing with scrap fabric can help you become more comfortable and proficient with your serger.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I get a book for my serger a handbook
Answer: I have not yet tried this method, but, I saw a post from someone who has shared your issue. Here is the post:How to remove crystals with Goo Gone:Use a tissue. I tried cotton rounds, but cotton left fibers behind.Saturate the tissue. You'll use lots of Goo Gone for this.Dab the front and back. Dab at the crystal area from both the front of the fabric and the back of the fabric to loosen the crystal.Don't tug. The crystal will loosen eventually. Don't tug on it the rest of the way or you'll remove some of the silver paint on the back of the crystal. Be patient and keep dabbing at the bugger until it releases on its own. Then you can re-use the crystal (with E6000 as a glue; you can't hotfix it again).Hotfix comes off easily. Hotfix crystals came off the pillowcase the easiest, but the E600 wasn't too bad. The crystals came off, but left a little lump of glue on the lycra. I just peeled off the little lumps.Do a practice run. Glue some crystals to a scrap of lycra before using the Goo Gone on a dress. You can take my word that it doesn't stain, but I'd rather you didn't. Give it a shot for yourself and see if it works for you.Update: lighter fluid, the kind you put in a lighter and is sold alongside tobacco, not charcoal, is terrific at removing crystals, both hotfix and E6000. As always, test first!Hope this answers your question and Good Luck !
Question: Does this have a chain stitch? Thanks
Answer: It wouldn't hurt to try, but the package does not specify use for rubber.
Question: does this come with a waste basket
Answer: If you are gluing costume jewelry, E6000 is a great option. For fine jewelry, I really can't answer that. Thanks!
Question: Con este modelo puedo coser lenceria intima, bañadores, boxer, bralette y a las vez tambien jeans
Answer: Yes.

User questions & answers

Question: use as a sewing machine
Answer: I know this is an old question and some of my answers are repeats, but if you are still using this machine and haven't come up with an answer maybe one of the following solutions from my own experience will help you. I love this machine and therefore completed an extensive search for answers to my questions which included: Brother Support (not that helpful), studying the manual carefully & repeatedly, asking sew 'n' vac store employees and lots of Google searches. Here, in no particular order, are advice/solutions that solved my gathering/bunching issue and many other issues. 1. PROPER UPPER THREADING: Regarding threading, let me advise that the thread will jump out of the correct lineup at times so if your stitch changes in a bad way, check that first. Also, I had to use a clip over a piece of foam on the last guide before the needle guide because it popped out constantly, regardless of checking, rechecking and having others check my threading. 2. PROPER BOBBIN THREADING: I am forgetful so actually check the manual each time I thread a bobbin. Improper bobbin threading will really mess you up. 3. CORRECT NEEDLE SIZE & TYPE for specific fabric--VERY IMPORTANT!! Some of this is trial and error. Not all needle/thread guidelines I found applied to my situation. I tried Schmetz--130/705, HaX1 of 15x1--the Brother manual states this as an alternative, but Organ HLX5 (not sold locally) is best. DO NOT use the Schmetz "UNIVERSAL" needles if you are working with a fabric that specifically requires sharp or ball point. The Universal has a slight ball point--not sharp not full ball point. Learned that the hard way. 4. CORRECT THREAD FOR SIZE OF NEEDLE, TYPE OF FABRIC AND EXPECTED END RESULT. (superiorthreads.com is an awesome resource for this and many other sewing, quilting, embroidery questions. They have tons of educational articles and you can email them and receive friendly, personalized assistance for your particular situation. This is not a conflict of interest because Superior does not sell sewing machines and the articles and email support are available even if you don't purchase Amazon does sell a very few Superior products but not many.) Before Superior, I had no idea how many variables were involved in sewing and learned more about thread than I ever wanted to know, but need to know. 5. TENSION--BOTH UPPER TENSION AND BOBBIN TENSION. This is the first machine I have owned that both could be adjusted. Check manual for what correct tension should look like and how to adjust (admittedly the manual is not extremely clear). Bobbin tension is tightened or loosened by a screw at the bottom of bobbin case, and upper thread tension is adjusted by the small knob on the left side midway down. This knob has numbers, but they are essentially useless (even Brother agrees). They are there just to show the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey--again, trial and error. 6. The LARGE DIAL TO THE RIGHT adjusts the stitch length, NOT the Tension. 7. Always keep the top thread guide pulled to maximum height, and make sure thread is coming out from the correct direction. Thread stands can also help although I have not tried one. Amazon sells these, several kinds. 8. If you use cone spools or slippery thread, you can purchase netting that will keep it from sliding and bunching at the bottom. 9. I have not yet figured out the best setting for the FEED DOG in various situations, but I do adjust it often if feeding seems difficult so far staying mostly within the light green area. Bottom line, your problem could be caused by any, all or some of the above factors. Good luck if anyone finds this answer useful. I can add photos, I think, if needed. Pretty sure this is the longest question answer I have ever written so I am not going to re-read, sorry for any typos or excess rambling.
Question: I have never serged before, I need a very simple to thread machine. any suggestions for me
Answer: Throat space is the area to the right of the needle when seated at the machine. It is the open area between the needle and the vertical side of the machine that determines how much fabric might fit comfortably within that space when sewing on your project.
Question: My 8 thread Baby Lock recently broke and i am desperate to get a replacement. Will I be satisfied with the Brother 1034D? I have a Brother Inovis an
Answer: Yes, there are many feet, including a walking foot. If you want a 1/4 foot with an "edge" on it, you would have to purchase one from the sewing outlet.com ($15.99). I like to sew with the edged 1/4 inch foot. Otherwise, there are many presser feet, including the free motion foot. You can drop the feed dogs to free motion. This is a great quilting machine and has excellent "pin feed," which moves the fabric through like butter. First time threading took longer for me, but after that it was free sailing. If you want to make quilts faster like I do, this is a great machine. I used to quilt with my Bernina, but I like the Brother better. It is more affordable and well made. You should also know that if you use thicker threads (I always use 100% cotton from ConnectingThreads.com), that you will need an 80/12 needle instead of the smaller ones due to the way the machine's tension is set up. Hope this helps,Vivian from Wisconsin
Question: I am looking at a tee shirt hem. It has 2 top stiched straight lines and the underside has the loops. Will this machine do this
Answer: It measures 8 3/4 inches from needle to right side of machine. It is 6 1/2 inches high from base to top of opening.

User questions & answers

Question: Im a beginner at sergering, which one: 1034d or st4031hd and why
Answer: A regular sewing machine would be so much better and easier! I also own a Brother SE 400 and LOVE It! I would choose it over the Brother 1034D Serger.
Question: Can you serge denim and vinyl
Answer: This serger is much easier to thread than others I have owned and used but it's not as simple as threading a regular sewing machine. You must thread in the correct order to be successful. Watch some of the YouTube videos that demonstrate threading this machine. Then what I did was place a sticker underneath each tension dial and with a Sharpie marker, I wrote 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the appropriate sticker. That way I can tell at a glance what order I need to thread in.
Question: Can this machine do rolled hems like on tulle and silky fabrics
Answer: Ouch. Hopefully, they have good customer support to help you. The 1034D will do what a 4-thread serger does and you won't be disappointed. But that's about it.
Question: What is the deferent between st4031hd and 2340cv
Answer: If you want that double line of stitching that covers the raw edge of your hem on the back of the work, you can use a regular sewing machine and a double needle. It is a stretchable stitch so you can use it on knits or wovens. Double needles come in a couple different widths and aren't very expensive--a lot cheaper than a cover stitch machine! The wrong side of the fabric will look somewhat like it's been zigzagged. You just use 2 spools of thread on top or a spool and a wound bobbin of the same color. That's why there are usually 2 thread pegs on your machine. Hold the 2 threads together & thread the machine as usual until you get to the last 2 thread guides, then separate them so they don't twist together near the needles.

User questions & answers

Question: Has anyone's clutch button gotten stuck in the up position? That's the button that switches your serger between coverstitch and overlock mode
Answer: Yes the same clutch problems happened so I bought another serger and keep this in cover stitch mode. [set by a technitian] Will sell as I never use it.
Question: Does this machine do heavy material
Answer: The Singer 14T968DC serger is a home serger. It can sew several layers of denim weight fabric, but may not be suitable for 4-5 layers of upholstery type fabric. This machine does not have presser foot pressure adjustment so too thick of fabric will raise the presser foot high enough to release the tensions.
Question: I have been using a brother 1034d. is this singer any harder to use than the brother
Answer: We only have information on Singer brand sewing machines; therefore we are unable to compare with a different brand. The Singer model 14T968DC comes with a CD Workbook, which shows you exactly how to use each stitch. There is also loads of additional support via instructional videos and a Customer Care line where our call center representatives will be happy to answer questions and help you to have a great sewing experience with the Singer model 14T968DC serger. The toll free Customer Service line number is 1-800-474-6437. We have expanded our hours to 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM CST, Monday to Friday. We now also have Saturday hours and are available from 8:00 AM till 2:00 PM CST.
Question: Can this machine do a good cover stitch
Answer: I know this is an old question but I hope it will help someone. I just tried this serger last night for the first time. The first stitch I did was the tripple coverstitch. It took me half an hour to thread it, but now that I have done it, I am sure it will take me less than 5 minutes next time. I am new to household sergers (used an industrial overlock over 20 years ago). Once I got it all set up, I was very pleased with the quality of the coverstitch. So far I don't regret buying this machine vs. high end brands.

User questions & answers

Question: would this case fit my juki mo-2000qvp machine when the spools are attached
Answer: Sorry, we do not have that screw set
Question: is one side clear
Answer: I think it would depend on your machine. These screwdrivers are not as short as the ones I use to get out screws from the plate, and neither of them is narrow enough to loosen the needle clamp screw when I change needles. I was disappointed in the set.
Question: Hello. would it fit happy 1100dsr overlooking machine
Answer: Particle board. Difficult to assemble. Three trays on the door have already broken off because screws are too short.
Question: Se puede usar para mini máquina de coser
Answer: Good luck... we had a hell of a time even with the instructions.
