14 best iron pad for quilting
An iron pad for quilting, also known as a pressing pad or pressing mat, is a valuable tool in the world of quilting and sewing. It's designed to provide a stable and heat-resistant surface for pressing quilt blocks, seams, and fabric pieces. Here's what you need to know about iron pads for quilting:
Heat Resistance: Iron pads for quilting are made from heat-resistant materials, typically a combination of dense foam and specialized heat-reflective or heat-resistant fabric. This construction allows them to withstand the high temperatures of an iron without scorching or damaging the surface.
Size and Thickness: These pads come in various sizes, with common dimensions being around 12 inches by 18 inches or larger. The thickness can vary, but they are usually about 1/2 inch to 1 inch thick, providing a soft yet stable surface for pressing.
Portability: Many quilting iron pads are lightweight and portable, making them easy to move around your sewing or quilting workspace. This portability allows you to set up a convenient pressing area wherever you need it.
Use with Any Iron: Iron pads are compatible with both traditional irons and mini irons. You can place the pad on a table or any flat surface, then use your iron on top of it.
Benefits:
- Even Heat Distribution: Iron pads provide even heat distribution across the fabric, helping to set seams and press quilt blocks accurately.
- Protects Your Work Surface: They protect your tabletop or workspace from heat and moisture, preventing damage or stains.
- Versatile: In addition to quilting, iron pads can be used for various sewing and crafting projects that involve pressing seams or ironing fabric.
Quilting Applications: Quilters often use iron pads during the piecing and assembly stages of quilting. They use the pad to press seams open, flat, or to the side, ensuring that quilt blocks lie flat and join together neatly.
Maintenance: Iron pads are relatively low maintenance. You can wipe them clean if they get dirty, and they don't require any special care or cleaning solutions.
Longevity: The durability of an iron pad depends on the quality of materials used. High-quality pads can last for a long time, even with regular use.
In summary, an iron pad for quilting is a handy tool for maintaining precision and neatness in quilting and sewing projects. It offers a safe and heat-resistant surface for pressing fabric pieces and seams, protecting your work area and helping you achieve professional-looking results in your quilting endeavors.

User questions & answers
Question: | Use on wool hooked rug |
Answer: | I don’t see how you can, unless you place it under the rug and move it around as you iron. This pad is pretty small. |
Question: | How can I clean my mat |
Answer: | Dear Customer, Thank you for your great question, If it is necessary to clean your wool mat, you can rinse the mat out in your sink or bathtub with cold water and then hang it up to dry. A gentle rinse should do the trick. Be careful not to rough up the material. Suzanne M - Savina Customer Care. |
Question: | Is the black residue because of the iron temperature? And, is the surface of the mat smooth |
Answer: | Hi Juanita. Thank you for your question, with your question, we can explain: this happens, probably because the temperature adjusted by the customer is too high. The temperature is too high to melt the material it is ironing, not the problem of the pressing mat. When the temperature is too high, we can't directly touch the pressing mat with the iron. The temperature is too high, and it will burn out no matter what is used, when burnt it may turn black. We use 100% wool, and there is not a coating on our mats. Pressing mats surfaces are smooth and free from ridges which results in a professional ironing experience, they are flat and convenient for use. Best regards. Suzanne M - Savina Customer Care. |
Question: | Can you use either side of the mat for ironing |
Answer: | Yes, you can use both sides of this mat. It’s great for pressing quilt blocks. Use the wool setting on your iron because too much heat will scorch the mat. |

TIPS:
✔ Always set the iron to WOOL or MEDIUM HEAT for best results.
✔ Do not put the iron on the pressure pad for too long.
✔ Most modern irons use pressurized steam. Since the wool pad is a porous product, steam is likely to pass through the mat. When you iron on our wool mats, it's like ironing from both sides, so we recommend using a dry iron for best results.

Answer: | It works well on a plastic table. I use a cheap plastic table from Walmart when I’m at college. No burning. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i use this on top of foam mattress |
Answer: | It still gets a bit hot underneath, so I would suggest putting a towel under it. |
Question: | Will it warp my cutting matt |
Answer: | I assume you mean you will be placing the mat on top of your cutting mat before you iron?? I wouldn’t think it would cause any problems. |
Question: | Is it waterproof? Meaning if i do high steam -will it soak through out the bottom and make the counter wet |
Answer: | Tried and failed, it will make the counter wet. |
Question: | Has anyone used the pad on a wooden tabletop? The manufacturer seems to recommend against it |
Answer: | I used this on another ironing pad for sewing and it did get very warm underneath. It did leave some quilting marks. For small seams while sewing, not a problem if padded, but for ironing an entire shirt, you could hurt your finished table. Suggest padding with folded sheet and using an area that is not the dining room table. I did like the silicone pad for the iron. It actually would be more useful as a rectangle vs an iron shape. |

Answer: | Yes, you can use the Wool pressing Mat on any flat surface. But STEAM is not recommended, as the steam would likely go through the mat. |
Question: | Can I use this to steam block crochet squares |

User questions & answers
Question: | The mat transfers heat onto the surface below and ruined my cutting mat. Now I use a silicone mat underneath but it’s still a problem. Any advice |
Answer: | Well if it helps any, I put my wool mat on a very old table top ironing board that had fallen apart. It provides added protection to sewing table top. You may want to place a regular ironing board by your sewing table and place your wool mat on it, may be the safest idea. Unless you have a wooden cutting board the same size as your wool mat. This should provided the added protection from the heat. Hope this helps a little. |
Question: | Is it ok to use Best Press or spray starch on fabric or does it transfer to the wool mat? Is that a problem |
Answer: | I used spray starch once while pressing a block, it sort of stuck to the wool pressing mat. Now I'm not sure if it was due to the type of starch or heat of iron, but it scorched and stuck to mat. I now place a double folded piece of cotton fabric over the mat just to protect it from this happening again. This allows me to use starch and not worry about anything happening to the wool mat. I still use it and like how flat my pieced blocks iron out. I hope this helps you. |
Question: | How thick is the mat |
Answer: | Hi. The mat is 1/2 inch thick or 12.5mm Thank you Norm |
Question: | Are chemicals added to this mat |
Answer: | Hi Again. I have checked with the factory and they are 100% wool only and zero chemical used in the manufacture process or in the product. Thanks again. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this reallly smell bad |
Answer: | I am not really sure what you are referring too....the large pressing mat? If so, no, there is no smell when using it. I love mine. |
Question: | Will you supply 17" X 24" pressing mat soon |
Answer: | Thank you for your approval for our pressing mat, the lager size will be offering in the near future, but the 8" x 8" mat will be offering soon. |
Question: | What keeps the mat from sliding |
Answer: | I keep my mat on top of a small ironing table so it doesn't slide at all on the cotton cover. I tried it on my cutting mat and it doesn't slide there either, but if placed on a slick surface like a countertop or even a dryer it will slide. Not much you can do about that. I found this mat to be better for pressing because of the firmness, it's better than my cotton covered ironing table. Good for quilting for sure. |
Question: | Is this mat safe to use on all surfaces |
Answer: | I use mine on a hard surface, such as a craft table for projects. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you wash the mat |
Answer: | yes |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | They work like a regular marker (you don’t have to push down). They make a fine line like a ball pen. For the white one you have to wait seconds to get dry and then line appears. 😉 |
Question: | The wool used may be 100% NZ wool, but what other fibers or other content is also in these mats? Mats melting or gumming up irons indicates something |
Answer: | I've used the steam setting on my iron and a heat gun from a distance on fabric and leather to remove the ink markings with zero bleed. These pens are called "ink" but it does not behave like ink from a writing pen in my opinion. I will say on a satin lining I was working with the blue ink did disappear but it definitely left a white highlighted shadow where the mark was so do a test before marking all your fabric. |
Question: | How thick is it |
Answer: | I have not had any problem with the erasing pen returning on the fabric gets cold. |

Loved By Quilting Professionals
From The Modern Quilt Guild to Quilt-stagrammers, Lilypad Lake is the choice for the quilting industry.
@NightQuilter says "I LOVE these mats! They create a smooth press!"
With an eye on quality, we never put our name on anything less-than-best and our fans will tell you the same: these ironing mats are built to last!
Compare us to our competition!
When you look closely, you can see the difference between our ironing mat and the other pressing pads online. Our premium mats are made from 100% New Zealand wool that is never treated with harsh chemicals or dyed to change the color. The wool is simply washed, combed, layered, and pressed until the mat is thick, dense, and smooth.
Rough Surface
This competitor sells their ironing mats without any attention to detail! There are stray items caught in the fibers, and the wool itself is rough. Ironing mats like this will leave your fabric covered in wool fibers as they peel off over time.
Color + Smell
This wool is untreated (like ours), but because it comes from less-than-ethical farms, the coloring is mottled. And beware the smell! Industrial wool that comes from factory farms has an unpleasant odor when it heats up under your iron.
Uneven Edge
This mat arrived at our doorstep with a completely uneven edge. Will this greatly affect your ironing? No. Is it reasonable for a company to have such low quality-control standards that they'd let this mat ship? Absolutely not.
Thanks for your support!

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this pressing mat require a pressing fabric (i.e. a pillowcase or other fabric on the surface of the mat) before using |
Answer: | No, the idea of the mat is to prevent distortion of the fabric you are pressing, adding another fabric would prevent the mat from stabilizing the fabric. |
Question: | What is the purpose of the silicone iron pad |
Answer: | It is used to place your hot iron in between pressing. Not sure why it is shaped like an iron, I never lay my iron flat, but I do use it to place the iron upright. I think there are irons that do not iron until you press down? I could see this would be handy if you were going portable, as opposed to having your ironing board set up. For whatever reason, I love the wool pressing mat! |
Question: | Wool ironing padAre there ripples on the surface |
Answer: | No ripples, the wool ironing pad keeps your fabric stable while ironing. |
Question: | Does this pressing mat require a pressing fabric (i.e. a pillowcase or other fabric on the surface of the mat) before using |
Answer: | No, not required. You might want to use a thin cotton pressing cloth to keep the mat clean, but anything heavier might impeded the purpose of using a wool mat. |
