14 best masking fluids
Masking fluid, also known as liquid frisket, is a valuable tool in the world of painting and is commonly used in watercolor and other painting mediums. It is related to paintbrushes, painting, and art supplies. Here's what you need to know about masking fluids:
Purpose: Masking fluid is used to preserve areas of the paper or canvas that an artist wants to keep white or untouched by paint. It acts as a temporary barrier that prevents paint from adhering to the surface underneath.
Composition: Masking fluid is typically made from a latex-based solution. It has a liquid consistency, making it easy to apply with a brush or other applicator.
Application: To use masking fluid, artists apply it to the areas they wish to mask with a brush or a specialized masking fluid applicator. Once it dries, it forms a rubbery or slightly tacky film that can resist paint.
Drying Time: Masking fluid dries relatively quickly, usually within 15-30 minutes, depending on the thickness of the application and environmental conditions.
Painting Over Masking Fluid: Artists can paint over the masking fluid once it's dry. When the painting is complete and the paint is dry, the masking fluid can be gently rubbed or peeled off with a fingertip or an eraser, revealing the preserved white areas underneath.
Removal: It's essential to remove masking fluid carefully to avoid damaging the paper or canvas. Some artists use a specialized eraser, while others prefer to rub it off gently with their fingers.
Varieties: There are different brands and formulations of masking fluid available, and some may have slight variations in color or consistency. Some masking fluids are tinted to make them more visible on the paper.
Caution: When using masking fluid, it's essential to clean your brush or applicator promptly after use, as dried masking fluid can damage brushes. Additionally, it's a good idea to test a small area on your paper or canvas before using masking fluid extensively to ensure it won't damage or discolor your artwork.
Masking fluid is a versatile tool that allows artists to create crisp, white highlights or protect specific areas of their artwork from being painted over. It's particularly useful in watercolor painting, where preserving the white of the paper is crucial for achieving certain effects.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is this for |
Answer: | Yes! I do, now, all the time! (Especially detail work. Formerly disposable brushes, toothpicks, etc.) I discovered after buying more than one, that they come in sizes. My access just dumb luck. I am sure that a conversation with an art supply house would get you some solid info. I use the smaller point more often! Any kind loads more than other methods and cleans out easily. All methods of application takes some practice, of course. Try Cheap Joes, Artarama, or Dick Blick for detailed information. Enjoy! Have been able to preserve my whites in watercolor or layering MUCH better now. |
Question: | Does it discolor the watercolor paper? i've used wn the yellowish mask and it stained the watercolor paper. seems like it wouldn't if it's colorless |
Answer: | This instruction means to indicate that you should apply the masking fluid while the paper is dry. After the fluid has dried, you can use watercolor paint in your typical method. The paper needs to be dry to promote proper adhesion to the surface, but it can get wet after application with no problems. |
Question: | Has anyone used this with a ruling pen |
Answer: | It’s pretty permanent. It won’t wash off but will probably fade over time. |
Question: | this says not to use on damp paper (above). how does that translate to working with watercolors? (thank you for your help |
Answer: | This listing is for a single marker. |

Question: | Can this be used on resin coasters when gilding the edges |
Answer: | Pebeo Drawing Gum - 45 ml/1.5 oz. |
Question: | Is this product flammable |
Answer: | I use self-moistening water brushes to do lettering with masking fluid - when the gum begins to dry, simply squeeze some water into the brush tip, and the drawing gum will slip off quite easily! I'd suggest trying it out with a Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brush, or if you have a tighter grip - like me :) - try an Arteza Water Brush Pens. (Credit for this technique goes to Nehohmee (via Youtube & Instagram) |
Question: | How many ounces or ml of fluid does this bottle hold |
Answer: | It is liquidized latex rubber, which you apply down onto watercolor paper before applying watercolor paints. It will mask (keep white) where you apply it, and it can be rubbed off and removed with your finger once your watercolor paint is dry. Similar to masking tape, but much cleaner and easier to apply. |
Question: | What type of pen is best to use with this if I want to do lettering |
Answer: | It does not stain the paper:) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used on yupo paper with alcohol ink |
Answer: | Get a small container and add a drop of dishsoap and some water. Dip your brush in the soapy mixture then blot dry, THEN dip the brush into your masking fluid and apply to your painting. When finished applying fluid, clean your masking brush with soap and water right after use or it will harden to a glue-like state! OR you can use a dip-stick OR you can youse a cheap brush. |
Question: | Can this be used to block off paint on galvanized metal |
Answer: | Hi I don't know how this compares with other masking products. I got it because it is non toxic and the other brands are toxic. It works as it is supposed to and did not damage my page. |
Question: | Do I need a special brush to apply masking fluid, or does the dropper work well for that function |
Answer: | I believe you could but would caution that the surface you apply it on should be smooth. If the surface has any engraving, grooves, etc., it may be a problem to remove the fluid from within the grooves. |
Question: | How does this product compare to other name-brands of masking fluid |
Answer: | I do not believe so. I dipped a Q Tip into it and put it to a flame. It crackled and sparked and flamed up for a fraction of a second but would not hold a flame. I hope this helps. |

Product description
DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Masking Fluid is easy to use with the bottle applicator, the included 5, fine-point applicator tips or with an inexpensive brush. Masking Fluid makes an impervious barrier to protect your watercolor paper and preserve the white areas by blocking watercolor washes from flowing into areas you don’t want leaving crisp, clean edges. DANIEL SMITH Masking Fluid applies as an off-white color and dries to a transparent caramel color so that you can see it while working, and still be unobtrusive while working on your painting. After Masking Fluid has dried, easy to remove with a rubber cement pick-up or even with your clean fingers. Be careful though, about leaving oils from your fingers when rubbing off the dried Masking Fluid, as oils from your fingers can interfere with new applications of watercolor. Once the Masking Fluid had been removed, either keep the white areas white or add fresh watercolor onto the preserved white area to retain maximum watercolor luminosity. Tip: Don’t shake the Masking Fluid, as this may cause air bubbles that will get into the applicator tip and transfer into your Masking Fluid line. Our Masking Fluid does not need shaking because our latex mixture does not easily separate. If you feel you need to mix, then gently roll your bottle once or twice across your table. When applying, gently squeeze the bottle to start the flow of Masking Fluid out the applicator tip. Also, keep the bottle inverted so that the capillary action once started continues to flow and rinse out the applicator tip immediately after using to prevent clogging when it dries. To remove Masking Fluid, use a Rubber Cement Pick-up rather than your fingers to avoid getting oil from your fingers onto your watercolor paper.
- Off-white when wet and dries to a transparent caramel color
- Includes five fine-point tips that can be attached to the bottle and used as a drawing tool
- Excellent coverage; easy flowing application
- Allow the Masking Fluid to dry thoroughly before painting with watercolor
- Made in the USA
User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used with acrylic paint on canvas |
Answer: | We would not recommend using heat on this, as doing so will make it more difficult to remove and it may stain or damage the paper. |
Question: | Can it be used on a pair of canvas shoes |
Answer: | Yes, you could refill it, but I don't think Daniel Smith sells it separate from the bottle. Also, I find that the tip has a terrible habit of clogging. I prefer Pebeo over this product. Pebeo stays liquid longer than any masking fluid. |
Question: | What happens to this medium on paper if heat is applied? Can it still be completely removed? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer |
Answer: | Not sure. Yupo doesn't grab paints well, and the frisket would have to stick on Yupo AND hold on in the face of the solvent nature of alcohol. A tall order! |
Question: | When this is empty could it be refilled |
Answer: | Probably It can be used with all kinds of paint Just don't leave it on too long or you won't be able to.remove it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work good on lexan rc car bodies |
Answer: | No it's not difficult at all--- when it dries the color and texture are obvious on the paper. |
Question: | WHAT COUNTRY IS THIS PRODUCT MADE IN |
Answer: | Please do not put this on your skin or anyone else's skin. It is a latex based rubber that is used for masking off areas on paper for watercolor painting. If you by chance get it on your skin it will come off, but it also contains chemicals and latex that may result in rashes, irritations, or other bad things if left on your skin. If you were planning on using it for Halloween makeup, please look into getting actual costume makeup that has been tested for use on skin. |
Question: | Is it difficult to see where you have applied it |
Answer: | I don't see a problem with that. Just if the acrylic is thinned out and watered down as with watercolor. I would do it. Best wishes. |
Question: | Does this peel off if put on skin |
Answer: | The masking fluid is for blocking off sections of art paper so that you can retain the white. For example if you want to paint waterfalls and the foam coming from them, you would apply the fluid to the parts of the paper that you do not want the watercolor for example if you want to paint waterfalls and the foam coming from them, you would apply the fluid to the parts of the paper that you do not want the watercolor To land. Then you remove the masking fluid when it is dry, enabling you to have white showing for various reasons. I wouldn’t use it on canvas shoes |

User questions & answers
Question: | I want to use masking liquid on acrylics, what is best |
Answer: | I probably wouldn't use this for that purpose. This is really a "crafter's edition" for use with smaller items. I have done a fair amount of general house painting and I think masking tape would work better, especially on hinges and handles. This masking fluid is good at covering for small areas, but would be cumbersome for large areas. Also, it can be a bit of work to remove and would cause problems if it got into seams/gaps. It might work OK for windows panes, since the surface is flat and easy to apply and remove. It does apply thin and a little does a long way, so it might do quite a few windows. I seem to recall there is a "regular" (non-crafters) version of this product, which might work better for covering many, larger items. |
Question: | Can this coating be safely lasered |
Answer: | Yes this will work on plastics and rubber, the shelf life is 18 months if container is kept tightly closed after use. |
Question: | How much area will 4oz. Cover? I need to paint my door and needs to cover hinges, door handle and windo panes |
Answer: | I assume the brush end is for masking fluid as well, but I use mine for watercolors with only the silicone tip for masking fluid, giving me two tools in one. |
Question: | I have 2 questions. Will this work on plastics and rubber? Whats the shelf life of this product |
Answer: | This product contains natural latex. |
