13 best glue for fabrics

Fabric glue is a specialized adhesive used in crafting, sewing, and other fabric-related projects. It is designed to bond various types of fabrics together without the need for sewing, making it a convenient tool for a wide range of applications. Here are some key points about fabric glue:

  1. Types of Fabric Glue:

    • Permanent Fabric Glue: This type of fabric glue creates a strong and durable bond that is meant to last through multiple washes and wear. It's suitable for projects like hemming, patching, and attaching appliques.
    • Temporary Fabric Glue: Temporary fabric glue is designed to create a temporary bond that can be easily removed or repositioned. It's often used for basting and holding fabric pieces together during sewing.
  2. Application:

    • Fabric glue typically comes in liquid form and is applied directly to the fabric. Some fabric glues come with applicator nozzles for precise application.
  3. Drying Time:

    • The drying time of fabric glue can vary depending on the brand and type of glue used. Some glues dry quickly, while others may require more time to set completely.
  4. Washability:

    • Most fabric glues are designed to withstand washing and can maintain their bond even after being laundered. However, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding washing and care to ensure the longevity of the bond.
  5. Versatility:

    • Fabric glue is not limited to fabric-to-fabric bonding; it can also be used to attach fabric to other materials, such as paper, wood, or foam.
  6. Use Cases:

    • Fabric glue is commonly used for a variety of crafting and sewing projects, including:
      • Hemming pants or skirts.
      • Repairing torn clothing or fabric items.
      • Adding embellishments or appliques to garments or accessories.
      • Creating no-sew fabric projects.
      • Attaching fabric to other surfaces in crafts and DIY projects.
  7. Precautions:

    • It's essential to read and follow the instructions provided by the fabric glue manufacturer. Proper ventilation is often recommended when working with fabric glue, as some varieties can emit fumes.
  8. Storage:

    • Fabric glue should be stored in a cool, dry place, with the cap tightly sealed to prevent it from drying out.
  9. Brands:

    • There are several popular brands of fabric glue available in the market, each with its own unique features and formulations. Some well-known brands include Aleene's, Dritz, and Beacon.

Fabric glue is a convenient and versatile adhesive for various fabric-related projects. It provides a quick and easy alternative to sewing for those who may not have sewing skills or access to a sewing machine.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i hem pants that are too long? Do i need to press sfter i glue. They are coruroy. 2 pairs
Answer: Yes, you can use this for hemming. If you have any further inquiries, please contact Aleene's at [email protected] or call 1-800-438-6226.
Question: Does this work on stretch velvet
Answer: This will not work on velvet. If you have any further inquiries, please contact Aleene's at [email protected] or call 1-888-345-0764.
Question: I've used fabric glues that get very thin if not used for a week or two. Is this a problem with this product
Answer: No, this should not occur with this product. If you have any further inquiries, please contact Aleene's at [email protected] or call 1-888-345-0764.
Question: How much area will one bottle 8oz cover? I want to replace the headliner in my truck which has an area of approximately 12 square feet
Answer: Just a guesstimate, but I think 1 to 2 bottles would suffice. A thin straight bead along the edges and a thin zig zag pattern (don't go overboard) throughout the remainder should do the trick. Don't think you have to have every inch of the surface to be covered. After drying it "should have a uniform effect" I've only used this product on a small area, but I've done similar repairs with other adhesives (not fabric) and it does the trick.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it dry clear? I want to fix snake leather tear on the shoe. Will it stay? If not, any other products to suggest
Answer: It depends, on dark fabric it does not dry clear. I am not sure if it will fix a snake leather tear in a shoe - not sure if it would be be tough enough and flexible enough for that application.
Question: Assuming the the top is closed properly, does it dry out if used infrequently
Answer: We bought a set of this after seeing a commercial about it a couple years ago - it was a three pack, I think. I large, medium, and small one. We bought it as a "just in case" item and I have rarely had to use it - it works wonderfully. It's tricky though - and seeps through fabric so I would apply with a quick, light touch. It dries fast, too - a bit too fast for my. Anyway/// I hadn't used it in a while, but last year I needed to use it a couple of times on some fabric I was crafting with. The first time I tried to use it - nothing came out. I shook the bottle, but heard little movement and when I opened the cap I was disappointed to see that it had dried up - there was a thick skin inside. I thought I might go ahead and just use the bottle for something else so started to pull the thick, strong skin out and realized there was still some liquid on the inside (as it splashed on my hands while I was pulling at the glue skin). Once I was able to wiggle the dried skin out - there was some glue in the bottle and it was usable. After that I closed the cap and put it back on the shelf. The second time I needed it again - months later - the same thing - there was a glue skin covering the inside of the bottle that I had to remove and then there was some fluid glue on the inside that I could use normally. I was disappointed about that thick skin developing each time. I'm not sure how much of the glue is hardening each time, but it's enough to know I probably am losing a lot of this expensive glue just because it's drying in the bottle. I'm afraid to go look into the LARGE and MEDIUM UNUSED bottles that have just been on the shelf! Again, the product works a dream once you figure out how to handle it. Shame that it skins in the bottle though - hoping I didn't waste a ton of money. This may be something bought one small bottle at a time, on sale - unless you have a definite need for it.
Question: Will it work to repair Muck boots
Answer: I think it depends on what parts of the muck boot. This product is primarily intended for adhering porous and semi-porous materials together, like fabric and leather. I really question its strength with smooth plastics, especially under stress.
Question: would it work well for putting a woven sports patch on a jacket
Answer: Yes, I think so if the jacket is cloth and not vinyl or leather. It works well if it can "grab" something to adhere to and it "grabs" cloth well. Remember, though, that it may slightly discolor fabric so keep the TM under the patch and don't allow it to bleed out from under it. Use a small amount at first and add to it if you need more.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used to hold on zippers
Answer: This product is ideal in creating collage, greeting cards, invitations and fabric projects. Regarding zippers, it can adhere the tape or fabric part but we cannot guarantee the hold would last due to frequent use or force applied.
Question: Will it stick fabric and felt to yarn
Answer: I have not tried that yet but I don't see why not. It's a great product for hemming curtains and it even survived the wash.
Question: will this work for denim (hemming jeans
Answer: Directions say washing will not affect adhesion. I've had good luck using a hot glue gun to hem canvas and denim. Use a high quality hot glue stick like Gorilla Glue Sticks. The trick is to press both side of the hem together quickly before the glue starts hardening. Also, apply glue sparingly to both sides of the hem. Too much and you risk the glue bleeding through the fabric. It's easy to forget that the glue is like molten lava; resist the urge to wipe off excess with your fingers. You will get burned. Instead, keep some tongue depressors or toothpicks handy to scrape up hot glue. The best part is that the hot glue bonds quickly, so you only need to press down on the joined parts for 15 seconds or so.
Question: Is this a permanent or temporary glue? Like it will stick to my graduation cap
Answer: permanent as any other Fabric glue that bonds a tears are possible.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it make a difference if using fabric glue or wil all purpose work on fabric
Answer: In using this glue I have found that it provides useful 'hold' in about 10-12 minutes. The item can be handled, or moved to the next stage of assembly after that, but it's still a bit sticky, and certainly still emitting solvent (so don't seal it in a plastic bag!). Overnight in a cool, dry room seems to allow complete drying. Sorry I don't have exact numbers for you.
Question: I am making a quilt. I need a glue to help hold the patches in place while I hand sew in place. Will this work
Answer: Oh yeah it dried clear and it works very well for jewels. I've done buttons and metal charms with it on canvas. It's fine, I love this glue!
Question: Hi....is this the glue i should use on cycling short to reglue the elastic hem
Answer: YES For Sure It Will. It Works Well On All Materials. :)
Question: Would this plead through thinner fabrics
Answer: The color of the paint is very bright, in tubes the paint is thick. You can paint the pattern directly according to the effect you want, even if you add a small amount of water, the paint has bright colors.

User questions & answers

Question: Im looking for best way to glue rhinestones and gems permanently to wedding dresses as arthitis prevents me from sewing that many as i used to
Answer: This would be a wonderful glue for your rhinestone application.
Question: I have a beautiful antique glass look up broken what does glue help glue that glass back together
Answer: I would look for a different glue for your application. This is more for fabrics.
Question: HOW long does it take to be set
Answer: It doesn’t take long to set, about 30 minutes, depending on the weight of the fabric. When glueing a heavy weight fleece robe pocket back in place it worked in between two layers but not where pocket hem was double layer. Dried in about 20 minutes but held together well even quicker@ about 5 minutes.
Question: Would this be strong enough to fix a large hole with a patch in a bounce house, the fabric type
Answer: I think so. I use it for almost everything I need glue for. I used this to glue down a floor tile once and a friend used it to make a leather dress instead of sewing. I recommend laying the area where you are putting the patch as flat as possible and setting something flat and semi-heavy (a stack of books, etc) on top of it while it dries overnight.

Question: Does it dry clear? I want to fix snake leather tear on the shoe. Will it stay? If not, any other products to suggest
Answer: It dries clear, but I have not used it to mend tears in Fabric.
Question: Assuming the the top is closed properly, does it dry out if used infrequently
Answer: Though I have not tried that it certainly should work!
Question: Will it work to repair Muck boots
Answer: Can't remember how fast it works, just that I did not like it. When dried, feels rubbery. Much prefer the regular fabric fusion.
Question: would it work well for putting a woven sports patch on a jacket
Answer: I wouldn't use it for that application, because of the weight. However, I may have an answer for you. I had the same problem with a bimini top on my boat. Unless you have access to a heavy duty sewing machine you can't stitch it either. Here's what I did. Take an awl or small phillips screw driver, hold the material together and make a small hole in both sides. Now, install an aluminum pop rivet with a washer on both surfaces. This requires a little patience, but , my canvas top has been in place for four years, at speeds of up to 45 mph. This is not as unattractive as you might think, and is very effective. Good luck!

User questions & answers

Question: What does uncarded mean
Answer: The tube of glue comes shrink wrapped in plastic. Uncarded means it is not packaged on a piece of printed cardboard with a plastic cover glued to the cardboard to hold the tube of glue in place. Let me know if you are confused.
Question: when it dries it it more like rubber, leather or canvas
Answer: Canvas. I've used this on quilts, pretty much anything you sew you can use this. It's very strong, I wash things with it and it never has dissolved or come open.
Question: Would I be able to use this to add a patch to a stuffed animal's face
Answer: Yes, the glue dries clear and is permanent.
Question: Does it stain and is it washable
Answer: No, this did not stain the fabric. It is washable. I used it to shorten/hem 2 pair of pajama pants instead of sewing them. The glue itself was on the thick side. At first it was difficult to get the glue to come out. I feel I might have been sent an older product.

User questions & answers

Question: can you wash it
Answer: As the manufacturer, Beacon Adhesives, we don't recommend using 3-IN-1 Advanced Craft Glue on Styrofoam as the solvent may erode the foam. We suggest either FOAM-TAC (One of my personal favorites for many applications beyond the RC plane market.) or HOLD THE FOAM, specifically designed for a strong, permanent bond for Styrofoam. HOLD THE FOAM doesn't contain a solvent, so it's perfectly safe for all kid's projects. Good luck with all your foam projects.
Question: does it wash off skin before it is dry
Answer: Yes very well but it does tend to be stringy and there’s a tip for how to avoid this on the bottle I’ve done about 30 DIY dollhouses and use 3 types of glue: This glue, fabric glue and crazy glue Have fun!
Question: will it wash off skin with soap and water before drying

User questions & answers

Question: Can you use it to bond cardboard harding for open ends. Like caps of sort
Answer: The cord are super flexible and 100% memory free. Another option is KnitPal 32-inch stainless circular needles, perfect for magic loop shttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B08DRVMRBJ?ref=myi_title_dp. We offer 365-day guarantee. You can not go wrong with either option :)
Question: drying time
Answer: No, these are fixed circular needles. Interchangeable needles allow you to swap different needle sizes and cord length and typically come as a set.
Question: I need a glue to bond metal embellishments to invitations, and something that dries clear and is durable. Is this stuff recommended
Answer: I cannot give you 100% assurance that there are no traces of these items in the stainless steel, and in fact, my families' personal experience indicates that they do. Most people with nickel allergies can use these needles without a problem, and this is the go to brand for folks with nickel allergies. However, my own daughter who has a severe nickel allergy cannot use Chiaogoo needles. The only stainless steel needles that she can use is the Addi brand from Germany.
Question: Will this work for felt
Answer: My size 11 needle is 5 inches long, my size 5 is also 5 inches long. Both are long cords enough for magic loop. Idk if the needle length varies by cord length. My size 13 with a short cord is the needle is 4 inches long. Hope this helps.
