Answer:	Yes, you can install it at home. It is used for a clothes washing machine water shut off. Potable water would be for water you drink.

Answer:	This valve is made for 5/8" OD Tubing only. The only way you can convert it to 1/2" threaded is to use a 1/2" female x 1/2" Copper sweat adapter, but this will put the valve to far from the wall. Your best solution is to purchase a 1/2" female threaded x 3/4" hose thread valve that will screw onto your existing pipe. These valves are called boiler drains or angle stop valves.
