Answer:	I don't recall seeing anything on the paperwork about it, but the machine does draw air in from the back and push it out of the front. The opening runs from the top to the bottom of the raised portion in the pictures. I would say you can get it fairly close to the wall and still have it draw in air okay, but if your looking to clean the air in a room, the more open space behind the machine the better it will do its job. I keep mine just over 8 inches from the wall and feel comfortable with that, though I suspect I could keep it closer without issue.

The humidifier has some sort of timer built into it, since after about that amount of time, it will alternate begin showing the humidity, and flashing "CF", which means "Check Filter" . In my experience, when I do check the filter, I see some patches of black mold. About that time it also begins to develop a slightly unpleasant odor. So, my experience shows that when the humidifier flashes "CF", it really means "Change Filter". I don't know what the yellow corner signify.
