where does the silver ring go when assembled

Answer:

this repair was a horrible fiasco for me, but I'll try to remember. The stamped metal part fits snuggly over the large end of the black plastic body, and the bronze-looking ring has a rubber seal that fits inside a recess on the inside. The main shaft goes thru this seal. This bronze component fits on the large black assembly at the opposite end from the stamped metal ring. In my case it was this ring which caused the failure, since it was not perfectly round. Hope this helps. Wishing you success! P. Mills
