12 best ring doorbell power source
Ring doorbells typically have a few different power source options, depending on the specific model and user preferences. These power sources include:
Hardwired: Many Ring doorbell models can be hardwired to your existing doorbell wiring. This provides a constant source of power and eliminates the need for battery replacement. It's a reliable option for those who want a continuous power supply.
Battery: Some Ring doorbells are designed to run on rechargeable batteries. These batteries can be removed and recharged as needed. The advantage of battery power is that you don't need to have existing doorbell wiring, making installation more flexible. However, you will need to periodically recharge or replace the batteries.
Solar: Ring offers solar chargers as accessories for some of their battery-powered doorbells. These chargers use solar panels to harness energy from the sun and keep the battery charged. It's an eco-friendly option that can help extend the battery life of your Ring doorbell.
Plug-In Adapter: In addition to hardwired and battery options, Ring also provides plug-in adapters that allow you to power your doorbell from an electrical outlet. This can be a convenient option if you have an outlet near your door and don't want to deal with batteries or wiring.
Power over Ethernet (PoE): Some advanced Ring doorbell models, particularly those with more features like video intercoms, may support Power over Ethernet. This means they can be powered through an Ethernet cable, typically used for data transfer. PoE is often used in professional installations.
The specific power source options available to you may vary depending on the model of your Ring doorbell. It's essential to check the product specifications and documentation for your particular Ring device to determine which power source is compatible and best suited for your needs.
Below you can find our editor's choice of the best ring doorbell power source on the marketRing doorbells typically have several power source options to ensure they can be installed in a variety of settings. The main power sources for Ring doorbells include:
Hardwired: Many Ring doorbells can be hardwired to your existing doorbell wiring. This means they are powered by the electrical wiring of your home. When someone presses the doorbell button, the existing wiring supplies power to the Ring doorbell and activates it. This power source option ensures that your Ring doorbell always has a constant source of power, and you don't need to worry about recharging batteries.
Battery-Powered: Some Ring doorbell models are designed to be powered by rechargeable batteries. These batteries can be easily removed and recharged using the provided charging cable. Battery-powered Ring doorbells are convenient because they can be installed in locations where hardwiring is not feasible. However, you will need to periodically recharge the batteries, which can vary in frequency depending on usage.
Plug-In Power Adapter: Ring offers plug-in power adapters that can be used with some models of their doorbells. This allows you to power your Ring doorbell through a standard electrical outlet. It eliminates the need for batteries and provides a continuous power source.
Solar Power: For certain Ring doorbell models, you can purchase a solar power accessory. This accessory consists of a solar panel that can be mounted near the doorbell. It harnesses solar energy to keep the doorbell's batteries charged.Solar power is a sustainable and maintenance-free option for powering your Ring doorbell, especially in sunny locations.
Power over Ethernet (PoE): In some cases, you can use Power over Ethernet to power Ring doorbells. This typically requires a PoE adapter or compatible hardware, and it's a more advanced setup commonly used in commercial or professional installations.
The choice of power source depends on your specific needs and the model of Ring doorbell you have or plan to install. Hardwired installations are often the most reliable because they ensure continuous power, while battery-powered options offer flexibility in installation locations. Solar power can be a great choice for environmentally conscious users.
Before purchasing a Ring doorbell or its power source accessories, be sure to check the compatibility and power requirements of your specific doorbell model, as different models may have different power options and requirements.

Question: | how long is this cord |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the exact same resistor (same manufacturer and same specs) as the one sold on the official Ring website |
Answer: | If you point it towards the garage can it can monitor it. If the garbage can was already stolen then no it can not time travel. |
Question: | Would it be a good to enclose the resistor in a small abs project box, like the hammond 1591bsbk? or can i just mount it exposed on a wooden rafter |
Answer: | One day after installing a Ring 2 , Rings notification came up to sign up for a plan. There is no workaround to get access to the Ring devices functions as any attempt leads back to the notification screen. Be aware that ring is useless without the basic plan at $30.55 per device. |
Question: | This says it's only compatible with Ring and Ring 2, will this work on Ring |
Answer: | 🤣🤣🤣 Hope I do not see any little girls with long black hair in their face nor a woman jumping off a cliff when mine is set up.🤣🤣🤣 |
Question: | Is this compatible with a ring doorbell 2020 edition that is being hardwired, not connected to a previous doorbell |
Answer: | Yes. The product names are VERY CONFUSING so pay careful attention. This is the second gen of the RING DOORBELL, the standard, "entry-level" version of the product. It has a built-in battery, which means, in order to recharge the doorbell, you have to take the entire doorbell off. The RING 2 is the upgraded product, which has a "quick switch" battery. I have 2 batts, keep one charged so I can swap them as needed. RING 3 is the upgraded, new version of RING 2. Essentially the same with a couple new features. Hope that helps. |
- Compatible with Ring Indoor Cam.
- Add even more flexibility to your Indoor Cam with a longer power adapter.
- Plugs into a standard outlet for nonstop power.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this camera work with existing door bell chime |
Answer: | Hi, The Ring Video Doorbell Wired is a wired-only doorbell that has all the features Ring customers have come to know and love. Including 1080p HD video with night vision, two-way talk and Advanced Motion Detection, all easily controlled within the Ring app. This doorbell can be powered by either an existing doorbell system, the Ring plug-in adapter, or a transformer for power supply (10-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz, or 24VDC, 0.5A, 12W). It's important to note, halogen or garden-lighting transformers are not compatible. The doorbell requires you to bypass the existing doorbell chime in your home. This means that after installation, your home doorbell system will not sound when the device’s button is pressed. If you wish to hear audio alerts in your home, you can pair your Video Doorbell Wired with a Ring Chime or compatible Alexa device. If you have any additional questions please email us at [email protected]. Sincerely, Danielle from Ring [email protected] |
Question: | Can you aim the camera in specific direction |
Answer: | Hi, Great question! The Ring Video Doorbell Wired offers a 155° horizontal field of view and a 90° vertical field of view. It is a wired-only doorbell and connects to your home's existing doorbell wiring, therefore the location of the existing wiring will determine how you can mount the doorbell. The Ring Wedge Kit and Corner Kit will be available for purchase. These kits when installed can help angle your Ring Video Doorbell in your desired direction. If you have any additional questions please reach out to our team at [email protected]. Thank you, Danielle from Ring |
Question: | Does not work with existing doorbell chime when wired!!?? That’s not a good thing |
Answer: | Pretty silly that Ring designed this to replace wired doorbells but it doesn't sound the current chime that people already have. I would venture to guess most people enjoy the sound of their current chime vs an electronic sound. The Nest doorbell has had this feature since launch. Bad design choice and feels like this was done to upsell the Ring Chime at the expense of what's beneficial to the consumer. The Video Doorbell 3 uses the existing chime, but it's bulkier and unattractive - would have been nice to use this smaller version. |
Question: | Do you have to reset if there's a power cut |
Answer: | Hey, If you should experience a power outage or a wifi issue the doorbell will stop working. However, once the power is restored the Ring Video Doorbell Wired should automatically reconnect to your network. If by chance the doorbell is not able to automatically reconnect you can manually reconnect it via the Device Health tile within the Ring application. If you have any additional questions please reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you, Danielle from Ring [email protected] |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work with the basic ring camera with no spotlight |
Answer: | The original stick up camera uses an older micro USB port. It was not the best outdoor solution and allowed moisture into the camera. The current stick up cams use the plug in connector that his water resistant. This should fit the newer spotlight camera and stick up camera. The older style solar charger is available on the Ring page. |
Question: | How long is the cord |
Answer: | 13' as specified. I have purchased a couple of these. The cord is 13' and accounting for some slack needed both a the light placement and the solar panel, the panel and the spotlight can be placed 10-12' apart (The camera and light placed for the view and coverage needed but the solar panel positioned for the best exposure to the sun eg. south). Mine works very well. |
Question: | Confused. There are several answers.... How long is the cord from the camera to the solar panel... Answers vary from 1.5 ft to 12 feet |
Answer: | It’s right there in the description where it says POWER CONNECTION at the bottom I pasted it here for you. Features & details Designed exclusively for charging the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery and Stick Up Cam Battery With just a few hours of direct sunlight every day, your Ring Camera will stay charged around the clock Power connection is 13 feet. Item dimensions is 7.75 x 5.50 x 0.50 inch |
Question: | what is output voltage and amperage |
Answer: | Per Ring Spec Sheet: The Solar Power Rating is 6 Volts, 2 Watts. This calculates to 0.33 Amperes.... The power P in watts (W) is equal to the current I in amps (A), times the voltage V in volts (V).... or Watts = Amps times Volts... or Watts divided by Volts = Amps 2 Watts / 6 Volts = 0.33 Amps Note, output is dependent on your Sunlight Environment. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Okay, if I charge a second battery, do I have to keep it on the charger or can I leave it in the box unplugged after charging till needed |
Answer: | I read the Ring Team's January 2020 answer that the battery can sit in the box for a few months unplugged after charging it. I did exactly that, and when I took the battery out of the box, it had discharged. It took more than 24 hours to recharge it. This has happened with both of the batteries (the one that came with Ring 3 Plus, and the one that I bought as a reserve). I bought the second (reserve) battery to put into the Ring to minimize "downtime" on the Ring device on my door. The Ring Team reply seems erroneous. |
Question: | Does this battery fit the video camera |
Answer: | After talking with a Ring rep. The battery will fit for the ring 3, 3 plus ring stick. Will fit all models of the ring which are battery operated. |
Question: | Does this come with the charging cable |
Answer: | It does come with a usb cable to charge the battery. In addition, I purchased a second battery, so I always have a quick replacement. The additional battery also came with a charging cable. |
Question: | how long the battery last |
Answer: | I have been running mine for 24 days now on a single charge. Initially I had it set to allow "live view" and it was really dropping the charge fast. In 3 days it went from 100% to about 80%. Now, after turning that feature off, it has gone from 80% down to 27% in 21 days. I think one reason for the rapid drain may be that our outside cat has figured out that if she sits on the garbage can, we will eventually open the door and let her in. I want to wait before recharging to see how long it will go before it starts begging for attention. Regardless of how long it lasts before requiring a recharge, I am going to purchase a backup battery so I can switch them out instead of having to worry about down time. In my opinion, Ring should package it both as it is currently sold and optionally with a second battery for those who do not have/want wiring. Yes I understand that there would be a price difference in the packaging but that is to be expected. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be mounted on to the wedge mounts |
Answer: | Yes. The factory wedge mounts can be attached easily to the solar charger. |
Question: | Can the corner kit be used with this |
Answer: | Yes you can but it goes on top of the corner kit and it looks kind of bulky. |
Question: | can i install this after i already installed the doorbell? will i need to poke more holes to install this |
Answer: | This is mounted first and Ring mounts to it. So unless you’ve already mounted the Ring to the wall somewhere, there should be no extra holes. If there is a need to remount your ring, this is slightly bigger than the ring and would fit over where you previously made holes. In this case there would be extra holes but not seen |
Question: | Approximately how many hours of sunlight does it require |

User questions & answers
Question: | How does it fasten to the front of the house? It is expensive, so can someone easily rip it off |
Answer: | Hi Neighbor, Ring doorbells are screwed into a mounting bracket and anchored to the wall so it can’t be easily removed. If it does get stolen, the doorbell will capture a video of the incident, which you can use to file a police report and we will replace it for you free of charge. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to me directly at [email protected] today! ' Thank you, Mary Nell J., Neighbor Satisfaction Specialist [email protected] |
Question: | Can the quick release battery be taken out by someone who wants to rob the house |
Answer: | I have it, and it's fast for detection so I have no worries for the average person (90%) who is going to rob you they WILL be seen and recorded...but a "smart" robber will have a 25 dollar wifi jammer to disrupt your network and your neighbors to get past it..but then you pair it with the ring alarm and as long as the cell signal is not jammed an alert should go off. I had a relo link camera, budget and with an SD card but it ate batteries and sometimes not record every event. This is a great device if you want easy and convince...but the best devices are expensive and wired only with a battery backup. |
Question: | is It weather or waterproof |
Answer: | I found out that yes, it most definitely is weather and waterproof, but in not so smart of away. I had my ring video doorbell 2 in its place by the door when hurricane Irma came through last year, and forgot that the doorbell was there until about 4 hours into the worst of the northeastern bands with the steady high winds and hang reason blowing sideways... which were blowing to the east - right at the front of our house. So at the point where I realized the doorbell was still outside, our power and internet were out but the battery was still powering the doorbell and I was worried about the internal electronics, but I took it inside, too out the battery, and put it on the counter and forgot about it for a few days until things started to settle down, and then the power finally came back on. so at that point, it was the Moment of Truth when I went and put the doorbell back in its place and when it reestablished its connection with the internet, every aspect of the doorbell worked just fine. It's been a year now since Hurricane Irma passed through Florida, and all the functions of the doorbell are still working just fine: the battery longevity, the speakers, the microphone, the infrared lights, and the camera lens are all fine. One other important thing to mention: our front door faces west and is right near the corner of the wall to the garage, which faces south. So, it goes without saying that it can handle the worst of Florida's relentless sun and humidity through the summer like a champ!! |
Question: | I'm surprised that no-one has asked the question I'm about to ask.... Do you have to "Subscribe" to their service in order for it to continue working |
Answer: | I'm surprised no one has asked about the apparent need for a home WiFi subscription being required along with the $100/year subscription needed for the doorbell itself. And what if you have a front AND backdoor?? Do you pay for WiFi and EACH doorbell every month? And how secure is the mounting? What's to prevent people from just walking up and stealing the $200 doorbell itself, along with any packages they may find on the stoop? |
