| Answer: | At first when Amazon and other online retailers hit they carried their own stock. You could get good deals and the toy hoarder's empire was broken. Quickly they learned how to intercept releases further up the logistics chains and turned the online environment against the consumers. It used to be they'd have to bribe cashiers at your local Toys R Us to make a case or two "disappear" and then reappear when they showed up for the purchase. The big box stores cracked down on how many could be bought at one time and enforced security. Now days they can just buy by the caseload online at the distribution level and create artificial scarcity. Also, Amazon, Walmart, and the like now fulfill for the hoarder scam stores instead of carrying their own stock. This enables the hoarders to charge double or triple MSRP for brand new toys. The bizarre thing is how many people defend this just a healthy sign of capitalism. These people add no value to the product, they just deny access to create misery among parents and collectors. The industry has the power to stop it but they don't. The only exception is Star Wars with Hasbro, who gave them a good screw this year when they re-released Han Solo, R2-D2, and the other Original Trilogy figures for the 40th Anniversary. Suddenly these jerks camping on these cases of toys for $200 were left chocking on their tears as prices dropped to the true MSRP of $20. Plus Hasbro stealth pre-released a number of new items this year to give buyers a fighting chance. Good on them, if the industry would put customers before the profit of hoarders who buy in mass this problem could be solved. However, for most franchises there's no incentive to do this and everyone is making money hand over fist (they know parents and collectors will come crawling back every time to pay; they always have before). - Written by a long term collector who's made getting around toy hoarders an art in pursuit of my hobby. |
