They are as tall as my son now, so he will grow into it.

Actually picking the stick up and hitting the other one. The one that looks like a flute it works pretty much like it. You blow into it and start putting your fingers on the holes and learn the different sounds. Its a very Peruvian sound. The one that looks like a long wooden corn shape with lines sideways.
