Lower voltages from a li-ion or nimh might work fine (as the device regulates itself to always output the correct amount of current) however we cannot guarantee the same performance as alkalines. Keep in mind that a pair of alkalines should comfortably last 6 plus months with regular use.

You just pass your hot wire through the hole and it samples the amperage. It will easily fit a #6 wire.
