Originally entering RAF service as a heavy fighter/night fighter in August 1940, the Bristol Beau fighter proved to be an extremely versatile aircraft. Perhaps best known as a Coastal Command strike aircraft, Beau fighters were capable of launching savage attacks against all manner of Axis shipping targets. Although still a Mk. X version of the Bristol Beau fighter, the later production aircraft of this series included a number of improvements and alterations which gave the aircraft a very different appearance. The most distinctive of these was the addition of a large dorsal fin fillet, which greatly increased the directional stability of the aircraft. There was also a ‘thimble' nose A.1 Mk.VIII radar, which gave the aircraft much enhanced target acquisition capabilities. Other improvements associated with the later Mk.X version of the Beau fighter included new rocket rails, which carried the projectiles in two banks of two, one rocket above the other and increased the accuracy of rocket attacks. There was also an additional 200-gallon drop tank, a new tail wheel suspension system and large spinners on the propeller hubs. A re-positioning of the gun camera to a new position high on the fuselage, just behind the cockpit canopy was the final improvement which visually altered the appearance of the late mark Beau fighter X strike aircraft.

The Hawker Hurricane was the RAF’s most vital fighter in the early years of WWII. These tough, partly fabric covered monoplane fighters put in a valiant defence against the numerically superior Luftwaffe during the Blitzkrieg. Although slower than the Messerschmitt Bf109, and with a less destructive armament, the Hurricane was able to turn tighter, and absorb considerable punishment.

These early machines were somewhat rushed into service and it was discovered that a number of modifications would be desirable, if not totally essential. Perhaps the most noticeable difference from the later models were around the canopy area – the first Typhoons were supplied with a forward opening ‘car door’ style cockpit entry for the pilot which even included a wind down window. The pilot also had a transparent roof panel, which hinged open to the left and some machines had the addition of a rear-facing mirror, on the canopy frame. The new Typhoon scheme is a fascinating one and helps tell the story how all nations coveted airworthy versions of the enemy’s latest fighters during WWII. This RAF ground attack aircraft was hit by flak whilst crossing the coast of France at low level, with the pilot making a belly landing in the nearest field he could see. Unfortunately, he was captured before he had the chance to set fire to his aircraft, to prevent it falling into enemy hands – he was taken prisoner. The aircraft was taken to Rechlin (the German equivalent of Farnborough) where it was returned to airworthy status. It was operated as part of ‘Zirkus Rosarius’, a unit operating enemy aircraft types, evaluating their performance, hoping to establish their strengths and vulnerabilities. The unit would tour operational Luftwaffe bases (hence the Zirkus name), where squadron pilots had the chance to see the latest enemy aircraft at close hand, speaking with the pilot flying it, to discuss how best to better them in combat. This aircraft probably served in this role for around a year, before being written off in a landing accident just a month after D-Day.

When the Nakajima B5N1 torpedo bomber entered service in 1937, it was the most advanced aircraft of its type in the world. Known by its Allied reporting name of ‘Kate', the B5N1 proved devastatingly effective in the early Pacific engagements of WWII. Known as the Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber, the B5N1 ‘Kate' was the main Japanese naval attack aircraft of the war and was to take a heavy toll of Allied shipping. Even though it served throughout WWII, the ‘Kate' was obsolete by the time newer American fighters entered the Pacific War but it was forced to continue fighting, as an effective replacement aircraft was not available to the Japanese Navy.

The end of the Second World War saw the victorious Allied nations desperately attempting to secure details of German jet technology and high speed research data, information which could be applied to their own jet projects. Using this information and engine technology obtained from Britain, the Soviet Union introduced the diminutive Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 in 1949 one of the most capable of the early jet fighters and even as this aircraft was proving effective during the Korean War, the Soviets were already working on its successor. The larger and faster Mig-17 Fresco may have given the appearance of being nothing more than a larger incarnation of its predecessor, however, this was in fact a completely redesigned aircraft, incorporating many improvements over the MiG-15 and a significant upgrade in Soviet jet capability. The MiG-17 was designed to perform the role of bomber killer and was never intended as a dogfighter, however its exceptional agility would allow this aircraft to score combat victories over much heavier and more modern American designs. Dismissing the aircraft as nothing more than an upgraded MiG-15, the Vietnam War proved to be something of a sobering experience for the US Air Force, as some of their most modern aircraft would fall victim to the guns of the MiG-17, even though this had itself been superseded by more modern designs. Lighter and much more manoeuvrable than the US aircraft, the subsonic MiG-17 would claim victories over such aircraft as the F-105 Thunderchief and McDonnell Douglas Phantom, which would result in the US developing new agile air superiority fighters, in the years immediately following the end of the conflict. Possessing both excellent performance and being easy to maintain, the rugged MiG-17 was produced in large numbers and became the standard Warsaw Pact fighter from the mid 1950s and for the next decade, with aircraft produced under licence in both China and Poland. An extremely cost effective aircraft, it was an attractive fighter option for many of the world’s smaller air forces and more than thirty overseas nations would eventually operate the type. Perversely, for a nation against which the MiG-17 was designed to combat, America would become home to significant numbers of these aircraft, most coming into the hands of private collectors, but a small number used in dissimilar aircraft trials and to perfect combat techniques against smaller, more agile jet fighters. Two beautifully restored examples have also been popular display performers on the US Airshow circuit over the years.
