User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with igniters and plugs |
Answer: | When you are looking at the name of a rocket motor, there are really 3 things that the name tells you. First, the letter determines the total impulse of the motor (AKA the total energy release). Pretty much, an A class motor will have a total impulse of 0-2.4 Newton seconds of impulse, a B will have 2.5-4.9, and a C will have 5-9.9. This continues indefinitely as motor power increases. The number immediately after the first letter is the average thrust of the motor during the burn duration. In this case, the C6-4 will produce an average of 6 newtons of thrust, while the A8-3 will produce about 8 newtons. The thing is that, while the A8 produces more power, the C6-4 will burn much longer since it contains more fuel. Pretty much, the higher the number, the lower the burn time. Finally, the number after the hyphen is the delay before the ejection charge is deployed. For small rockets like these, you don't need the charges to be perfect, so anything between 3 and 5 seconds will usually be fine. However, if you are building a larger rocket, like F class or above, it is a good idea to do some calculations to estimate when the charge should fire, or you should use an electronic deployment system. |

Blast Off to Extreme Heights
With two rocket kits, the Tandem-X Launch Set offers two unique launching experiences. The aptly-named Amazon is the bigger of the two rockets: it towers at almost three feet tall and features a fearsome tiger-stripe decal. When flown with a standard Estes engine, the Amazon can soar to heights of 600 feet.
The Crossfire is a smaller craft, standing just a little over 15 inches tall. In spite of its size, this little rocket can blast off to seriously impressive altitudes. Thanks to its aerodynamic fins and nose cone, the Crossfire can reach cloud-bursting heights of 1,150 feet. Both rockets are outfitted with colorful, preassembled parachutes, which ensure they can float gently back to Earth for another flight.
An Introduction to Rocket Building
The Tandem-X Launch offers just the right amount of challenge for novice rocket builders. The Amazon is an E2X (easy-to-assemble) rocket, and requires no paint or special tools for assembly. It can be built in less than an hour: simply glue the plastic fins to the tube, install the engine, and attach the parachute. Finish the rocket off with a few self-stick decals, and you're ready to launch.
Once builders have mastered the basics, they can move on to the more advanced Skill Level 1 Crossfire. With its plastic nose cone and laser-cut balsa fins, the Crossfire requires a little more finesse. Assembling the rocket can take an entire afternoon, but it's a rewarding and educational process. Builders will learn several beginner-level rocket techniques, such as painting and sanding. Estes has also included an illustrated, step-by-step instruction guide to help keep the assembly fun, smooth, and frustration-free.
Educational Fun
In addition to the thrills it provides, the Tandem-X also has significant educational value. The set transforms kids into amateur rocket scientists, encouraging them to think about how the rockets work. Rocket building teaches kids the basics of propulsion, flight, and aerodynamics, and can help foster an early interest in science and engineering. Even failed launches can turn into a learning experience.
Requires an Estes Engine
Both rockets require a specialized Estes engine to launch. For the Amazon, Estes recommends a B4-2 engine for your first flight. The rocket is also compatible with other Estes engines, including the B4-4, B6-2, B6-4, C6-3, and C6-5. For the Crossfire, Estes recommends the A8-3 for first flight, and the B4-4, B6-4, C6-5, and C6-7 for more advanced launching.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do i need wadding with these engines |
Answer: | Wadding was not included with the engines I purchased. |
Question: | Does it require batteries |
Answer: | I highly doubt it. Technically these engines are marketed and registered as a firework for legal purposes. You might double check for the legal specifics with TSA or the manufacturer, ESTES, for the legal parameters. I do know when I have ordered them they are shipped by ground transport due to air freight requirements and limitations. |
Question: | Do these come with ignitors and plugs |
Answer: | First off, make sure you have strong batteries in the controller in your hand. The igniter has to be placed into the engine so the chemical covered end of the wire loop is touching the solid fuel. Then insert the plug carefully so the wires don't short together. Assuming you have everything hooked up right, There is a circuit test feature in the launch controller that glows to let you are hooked up right. It comes with the instructions. The engine 3-pack usually comes with 4 igniters in case there is a failure. These are one-use items, as are the engines. Extra igniters are available from Amazon, Estes themselves, or any other retailer marketing Estes products. With numerous launches you will eventually build up a small stock of extra igniters. I personally place them in a small medication container to protect them as they are fragile. With the rocket on the pad watch for the wires and clips touching the blast plate shorting it out. On some rockets it might be necessary to put something on the blast plate to raise the rocket up on the launch rod about a a half inch or so. A small pebble works nicely. With the rocket properly packed, engine igniter in, and the indicator showing the circuit is good, arm the launcher and press the button. It may take a a couple of seconds to fire. Have fun! Be safe. |
Question: | Do you need igniters with these |
Answer: | INCLUDES: Three A8-3 Engines Three Igniters Four Igniter Plugs |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these rockets be lighted by pressing a 9-volt battery to the ignition terminals |
Answer: | yes, tear it up when you go to stuff it in your rocket, wad each piece to take up room and fill the rocket with 1 to 2 inches to protect the recovery device. If you look real close you will see it had cuts to tear off smaller sheets. |
Question: | How far does it go |
Answer: | No sure. Use tissue paper. 1st time my boys and I shot a rocket forgot wadding at home. My wife always had a tissue box in truck and we tore it Into 3x3 inched stuffed the rocket with about 4 pieces and it protected the parachute and made seeing the rocket in sky for recovery easy. My boys want to experiment with bright colors next |
Question: | Do these engines have a secondary charge to deploy the parachute |
Answer: | Use it to protect your parachute from melting when the hot ejection charge goes off to deploy the parachute. |
Question: | Do these engines come with igniters and igniter plugs |
Answer: | If your question is about wadding, then you can only use it once. As for the engines for model rockets, they are usually one-time use only. |

Our History
Estes Industries was founded in 1958 in Denver, Colorado. Vern Estes developed a machine that mass-produced solid propellant model rocket engines. This invention gave people a consistent and reliable way to launch model rockets. Later, the company branched out into the mass production of balsa nose cones and adapters for model rockets. Estes began selling model rockets by mail in 1960.
The company was moved in 1961 to a 77-acre tract of land on the outskirts of Penrose, Colorado.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are engines one time use |
Answer: | How high an A3-4T will carry a rocket depends entirely on the weight and streamlining of the rocket itself. The biggest factor is its weight however. An Estes Mini Mosquito will take off so fast and fly so high, it will likely be lost when flying on this motor. Using them on an Estes Alpha III with a mini-engine adapter will give you a much slower flight and about 230 feet altitude. So it varies greatly. |
Question: | Does it come with wadding |
Answer: | The motors have a single ejection charge, which will go off 4 seconds after the motor stops burning. That will pop out a parachute, yes. |
Question: | Do they come with starters |
Answer: | Yes. As far as I know, all the engines come with igniters and plugs. |
