14 best slow speed bench grinders
A slow-speed bench grinder is a type of power tool used for various tasks in workshops, particularly for sharpening, grinding, and polishing metal objects or tools. These grinders are designed to operate at lower speeds compared to regular bench grinders, which typically run at higher RPMs (revolutions per minute). Slow-speed bench grinders offer several advantages in terms of safety, precision, and versatility, making them a valuable addition to any workshop.
Here are some key features and benefits of slow-speed bench grinders:
Low Speed Operation: Slow-speed bench grinders typically operate at speeds between 1,500 and 1,800 RPMs. This reduced speed makes them safer and easier to control, reducing the risk of accidents and overheating of the workpiece.
Precision Sharpening: These grinders are ideal for sharpening various cutting tools like chisels, knives, and plane blades. The slower speed allows for more precise and controlled material removal, ensuring a sharper and more accurate edge.
Reduced Heat Generation: Lower speeds generate less heat during the grinding process, which is crucial for preventing overheating and damaging the tools or materials being worked on. Overheating can lead to loss of temper in metal tools.
Less Material Removal: Slow-speed grinders are less aggressive than high-speed ones, which means they remove less material with each pass. This can be advantageous when you want to be more cautious about preserving the integrity of the object being worked on.
Safety Features: Some slow-speed bench grinders come with built-in safety features such as spark arrestors and eye shields to protect the user from sparks and debris generated during grinding.
Versatility: Besides sharpening tools, slow-speed bench grinders can be used for various tasks like cleaning, rust removal, and even buffing and polishing with the right attachments and wheels.
When using a slow-speed bench grinder, it's important to adhere to safety practices and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), which may include:
Safety Glasses or Face Shield: To protect your eyes from flying debris and sparks.
Hearing Protection: If the grinder generates a high level of noise.
Dust Mask or Respirator: When working with materials that produce dust or fine particles.
Protective Apron and Clothing: To shield your body from sparks, metal shavings, or other debris.
Gloves: To protect your hands from sharp edges and heat.
Steel-toed Boots: For foot protection in case of accidental impacts.
In summary, slow-speed bench grinders are valuable tools in workshops, offering precise and controlled grinding, reduced heat generation, and enhanced safety. When using them, it's essential to wear the appropriate safety apparel and personal protective equipment to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries.

(600 grit on a board against the running motor’s arbor) Additionally I added the pair of matching domed washers to improve centering of the wheel. |
Question: | what is the size of the arbor |

The WOLVERINE Grinding Jig is the CORE component of the ONEWAY WOLVERINE line of grinding products.
Producing razor sharp tools and finely finished bevels has moved from an art into a science.
Owning the WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will ultimately save you time, frustration and money. You can now grind your tools properly the first time. Uniform cutting edges and single facet bevels will give you safer, more predictable tools. Because you are grinding your tools less, both your wheels and tools will last longer.
This Grinding Jig can be easily used to sharpen the following tools:
- gouges
- chisels
- scrapers
- parting tools
- skews
- carving tools
The WOLVERINE Grinding Jig will speed up your grinding, give you sharper tools, and prolong the life of both tools and wheels.
The Grinding Jig comes with two bases - grinders come with two wheels, so we include two bases.
Vari-Grind
The Wolverine Vari-Grind will properly shape and maintain the edge on standard bowl gouges, the modern side grind (also known as the Ellsworth grind, Liam O'Neil, or Irish grind), and the traditional fingernail shape for spindle work detailing. ONEWAY has spent considerable time and effort to develop a system which will consistently produce sharp, repeatable geometries on turning tools for the wood turner.
Three tools that are very popular and useful are the fingernail shape, the traditional bowl gouge and the side grind configurations. These shapes however are difficult both to grind and to maintain.
This single jig will produce every shape from the first mentioned fingernail grind right up to the side grind and everything in between to suit your needs.
- Produce razor sharp tools and finely finished bevels
- INCLUDES: the Wolverine Sharpening System & The VARI-GRIND jig
- The Wolverine System was designed to replace conventional light duty toolrests with heavy duty universal grinding and dressing jigs for low cost grinders.
- The Wolverine Original Vari-Grind Jig will properly shape and maintain the edge on standard bowl gouge, the modern side grind shape and the traditional fingernail shape.
- Grinder and Turning Tools NOT included

User questions & answers
Question: | what exactly comes with this? can i sharpen my lathe tools with just this one thing? doesn't say "whats in the box |
Answer: | I bought one about a year ago to sharpen my lathe tools, lawn mower blades, and more. You get the two adjustable arms as pictured. They move in and out of the jig plate and clamp securely to get just the right angle on your tools. You have to supply a piece of plywood about 2.5 feet wide by about 1.5 feet deep which you clamp you grinder to and screw the "jig plates" onto the plywood. It also comes with an excellent DVD movie tutorial that explains in detail how to sharpen common lathe tools such as the skew chisel, roughing gouges, parting tools, and bowl gouges. I especially like the flat plate about 2 inches by 4 inches and which clamps at any angle. Of course it takes some time, and some trial and error to get the angle set just right, but after that assuming you are sharpening the same tool, it is set for re-sharpening at exactly the same angle as before. I love my Wolverine Jig and I can't imagine sharpening lathe tools without a similar device. This one has been copied by everyone else, but if the price is right, why not buy the original? |
Question: | Unboxing the jig has 4 aluminum brackets without any description of what they are. What are these for, 2 sq brackets & 2 angled with slots |
Answer: | 2 years later, I have the same question about the metal brackets. There were no instructions with the grinding jig, but I found them on the Rockler website. However, there is no mention of the brackets. |
Question: | How is this better than a home made jig that has an arm that slides in and out and a pocket on the end of the arm?i |
Answer: | I used an homemade oak version for years. This one has two advantages. First, it's designed and manufactured perfectly. It's solid and repeats every time with its square tubes. The locking handle/cam is better than my 5/16 bolts and washers. Second, the tubes are interchangeable so you can switch wheels with either jig. |
Question: | will this jig work well with a 6" grinder |
Answer: | It works fine with my 6" grinder. The directions say that it should be set up so the axis of the grinding wheel is 6 1/4 to 6 1/2" above the jig bottom so I glued up 3 pieces of 3/4 ply ( total 2 1/4" thick) to mount the motor. This turned out to be exactly right for both the jig and the platform to work. The third Amazon product photo shows it being used with a 6" grinder. In that photo the motor block appears to be 2+ inches thick |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this work with a 10W heater (i.e. a glue gun ) to allow various temperatures to be set |
Answer: | The controller is rated at 40 amp max and I think 20 continuous amps I think you should be fine with 8amp. I amusing mine to control a 56 amps max trolling motor drawing on average 12 to 15 amps |
Question: | Would it work on a lathe with a 3/4 hp and 120v 6 amp motor |
Answer: | Hello, this can't work for 7x12 550w mini lathe control board. |
Question: | Will this work for my electric nail drill |
Answer: | Please search on YouTube the name of the doc motor and you will find several videos on the controller that will show you how to wire and install it, I have never looked at the description that came with the item |
Question: | Will this work on a skill reciprocating saw. Model |
Answer: | As long as your pack voltage is at most 12v and you do not go over the max amp for the controller (check the specs to find that out) then you should be ok. I tend to use it with a 39lbs trolling motor powered by a 12v battery I intend to put a fuse between the battery and the controller |

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of light bulb does it use |
Answer: | The center line of the arbor is 7 3/8", plus or minus. |
Question: | Where it made from |
Answer: | I have 1 1/2" CBN wheels on my grinder and I used the washers that came with the wheels supplied with the grinder which take up 1" of the arbor length - not a whole lot of thread left, but it works fine. I took the guards off because CBN wheels do not have the danger that ALOX wheels have. I've been very happy with them. |
Question: | what is the height form bench top to center of arbor |
Answer: | It is 115v it has variable speed motors that I believe would be internally inverted in voltage |
Question: | will a 1 1/2 inch CBN wheel fit this grinder? The 1 inch looks pretty close to the guard |
Answer: | It has and Induction motor and will trip a ground fault plug |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can the guards be removed to allow for polishing larger items |
Answer: | Guards are removable, I would not recommend any type of grinding with them removed though. Be careful. |
Question: | Can I use this for polishing brass |
Answer: | I have no idea. I don't know if you can get a polishing wheel on this thing.I know that you can't use an 8" wire brush, stalls instantly because no clearance from the guard. Manufacturer should have advised. Not crazy about this product. If it wasn't so much trouble to return, would have done so immediately. |
Question: | do you have to buy wheels separate or does it come with two |
Answer: | It comes complete with the 2 wheels and ready to use after attaching the shield and supports to the body. Easy project. I am very pleased with the grinder. |
Question: | what is the length of the arbors |
Answer: | The arbor is 2" long without the back washer on the motor side. Also, the diameter is 5/8". |

User questions & answers
Question: | where is it made |
Answer: | There wasn’t any DNA splicing if that’s what you mean. I read about this a few years ago when I started to grow the maroon. Blue Bonnets have a genetic defect that turns them maroon or white. Texas A&M isolated the maroon bonnets to get more yield. Don’t mix blue and maroon together, or your maroon plant could produce blue, or maroon and blue. Or the seeds that come off the maroon plant could be genetically correct so you would get blue flowers the next year. Has to do with cross pollination. |
Question: | I'm a fat man, will this apron fit a 58" waist |
Answer: | We sell 20 TEXAS BLUEBONNET seeds. Plant the seeds in October and November (early October is best). |
Question: | Petite folks (around 5' 3" or smaller): does this apron fit you or does one size fits all really mean one size fits most men |
Answer: | Hi, we ship from Nebraska |
Question: | As the wax treatment wears over time, how do you suggest that it be restored or reapplied? What product should be used, and how should it be applied |
Answer: | Bluebonnet seeds can germinate years after they fall to the ground. That is one reason they are so successful; they can "weather" the droughts down here. |
