13 best sensor detector for homes
A sensor detector for homes, often referred to as a gas detector alarm or household sensor alarm, is a safety and security device designed to monitor and alert homeowners to the presence of various gases or other potentially harmful substances within a residential environment. These detectors are an essential part of home safety systems and can help protect residents from various hazards. Here are some key aspects of sensor detectors for homes:
Types of Detection:
- Gas Detection: Gas detectors are commonly used to identify the presence of potentially dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) and natural gas (methane). Carbon monoxide detectors are especially important as CO is odorless and colorless but can be deadly in high concentrations.
- Smoke Detection: Smoke detectors are another essential type of household sensor alarm. They detect the presence of smoke particles, indicating the possible presence of a fire.
- Combination Detectors: Some sensor detectors combine multiple detection capabilities, such as both smoke and carbon monoxide detection, for added safety and convenience.
Placement: Proper placement of sensor detectors is crucial for their effectiveness. Smoke detectors are typically installed on ceilings or high on walls since smoke rises. Carbon monoxide detectors are often placed at or near head level, as CO mixes evenly with the air.
Audible and Visual Alerts: When a sensor detector detects a hazardous condition, it typically triggers an audible alarm, such as a loud siren or beep, to alert occupants. Some models may also have visual indicators, like flashing lights, to convey the alarm status.
Power Sources: Sensor detectors can be powered by batteries, hardwired into the home's electrical system, or a combination of both. Battery-powered detectors are essential in case of power outages.
Interconnected Detectors: In larger homes, interconnected sensor detectors are recommended. When one detector detects a hazard, it can trigger all interconnected detectors in the house, providing early warning throughout the home.
Smart Detectors: Some modern sensor detectors are equipped with smart technology, allowing them to connect to a home's Wi-Fi network. These devices can send alerts to smartphones or other devices, providing remote monitoring and notifications.
Regular Maintenance: To ensure their reliability, sensor detectors should be regularly tested and maintained. This includes checking the batteries, cleaning the detectors, and replacing them according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Legal Requirements: Many regions have legal requirements mandating the installation of specific sensor detectors, such as smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, in residential properties. Homeowners should be aware of and comply with local regulations.
Additional Features: Some sensor detectors may have additional features, such as digital displays to show gas concentrations, hush buttons to temporarily silence alarms, or voice alerts for added clarity.
In summary, sensor detectors for homes are essential safety and security devices that monitor for the presence of gases like carbon monoxide and smoke. They provide early warnings of potential hazards, allowing residents to take necessary actions to protect themselves and their property. Proper installation, maintenance, and compliance with local regulations are essential to ensure the effectiveness of these life-saving devices.

User questions & answers
Question: | I see there are air holes in the back, so if it is placed against a surface, won't it impede the airflow into the detector |
Answer: | According to the company's website, the unit should be placed on its back (display facing upwards), on a flat surface, at breathing-level height, and away from windows, doors, air vents, etc. See https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003370189-How-do-I-place-my-Home-radon-detector-to-obtain-correct-measurements- Or as their FAQ answer states: "You can just lay it flat on a table or a shelf. The air flows into the Radon chamber as usual." https://support.airthings.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001097069-Can-I-just-lay-the-unit-flat-on-its-back-side- |
Question: | what is the shortest amount of time you can do a test with this device? a home inspection last only a few hours..will it have to be left over night |
Answer: | Professional testers need to be used for a 48 hour test. For this home unit, it should run at least a week to be somewhat accurate. A month would be better. It will have a 20% deviation for a 48 hour test. 7 day test should be around 10% deviation and 2 months around 5%. Right now, mine has about a 30% deviation compared against professional 48 hour testers. I'm contacting support now for help. I've owned it for about 6 months. |
Question: | Are we positive the readings are accurate? I have now tested the first floor of the house and am getting a reading of 7.5 pCi/l |
Answer: | We have two older (15+ years) Safety Siren meters that read 2.3 & 2.4 for both long and short readings and seem stuck even after a reset/retest in our radon mitigated basement. The new Airthings 223 started a little over 2.0 and slowly dropped to 1.8. Yesterday I resealed the sump pit covers to the floor and the Airthings 223 1-day average already ( |
Question: | how often does the tester need to be calibrated and how much does it cost to calibrate |
Answer: | My answer has nothing to do with radon concentration in the tested environment, but incorrect terminology being used on this discussion thread. Resetting the radon sensing instrumentation means system initialization to factory calibration, as the unit is not user calibrate able. Calibration implied by this question is to a standard, and it must have been done with the prototype designs when tested against known radon concentrations in chambers...using perhaps master instrumentation. I think this device can give you values within some level of confidence like 95%...but the measure value of any unit like this is not to be taken with 100% confidence. |

The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.
Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In DesignDesigned for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor |
Answer: | Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much |
Question: | is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product |
Answer: | Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards. |
Question: | No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners |
Answer: | HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much |
Question: | I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas |
Answer: | Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards. |

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this detector constantly plugged in like smoke detector |
Answer: | I suspect it can. If you have wind conditions of course that would affect how much gas the detector would pick up but if it was close enough to the source it should work |
Question: | How often should a gas detector be replaced? Every 5 years |
Answer: | No. LPG, natural gas, and town gas, according to the instructions. |
Question: | Is the alarm constant until the situation is addressed |
Answer: | I looked at the instruction manual and the box and it doesn't say anything about being UL listed. It is built in China but I don't know if that has anything to do with what is or isn't UL listed. Sorry I couldn't help more. |
Question: | Can I use with a battery |
Answer: | Hello, this product does not detect carbon monoxide, please pay attention when buying. Propane cannot be detected, but methane can be detected. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Radon regulated states require that testing devices for real estate exchanges be approved by aarst or epa is this approved by either |
Answer: | Hi there and thanks so much for your question! In order for a radon monitor to be approved by the AARST you need take a high amount of radon "counts" per hour within a specific time-frame usually (48-72 hours) which are done for real estate transactions. The Wave does not meet these requirements, it is designed for very accurate long-term measurements to give you a broader understanding of what your radon exposure is over the period time and not just a snapshot. However Airthings does have a monitor that does meet these requirements, our Corentium Pro. The Corentium Pro is fully AARST-NRPP certified and used and trusted by thousands of radon mitigators and house inspectors. Question: | Is the hub required to connect with Alexa or other platforms |
Answer: | You can use the Wave in 2 ways: 1. With Bluetooth: all that is required is to download the Airthings app (iOS or Android) and the app will obtain the measurement data using Bluetooth 2. With an Airthings Hub: the Hub is connected to a power source and Ethernet. It will automatically connect to your Wave using SmartLink and keep your data always up to date so you don't have to use Bluetooth. The Wave can connect to Amazon Alexa, with or without the use of an Airthings Hub - however, the experience is enhanced with use of an Airthings Hub as the measurement data is constantly up to date. Hope this helps! |
Question: | What is the difference of gen 1 (which cost more) vs gen 2 which cost less? thanks steve |
Answer: | The difference between the Wave 1st generation and Wave 2nd generation are that the Wave 1st generation provides measurements for radon, temperature, and humidity every hour. The Wave 1st generation is also not equipped with SmartLink which allows you to connected with the Airthings Hub to allow you to always be connected to your monitor. The Wave 2nd generation is much more similar to our Wave Plus under the hood with the firmware and is compatible with the Airthings Hub. The Wave 2nd generation provides a rolling 24 hour radon measurement every hour and the temperature and humidity are updated every 5 minutes. If you have any questions just reach out to our support team at [email protected] or chat with us on the Airthings website! |
Question: | I have a mountain cabin and have no internet, by design! Will this thing work with my smartphone w/o being also connected to the internet |
Answer: | Hi there - thanks for your question! This is the way it works: 1. you have to connect to the Wave via Bluetooth with a mobile phone or tablet. Bluetooth connections normally require you to be within approx. 30 ft of the device, and then you can view your up to date data in the app. 2. Once the data has been synced via Bluetooth and you have internet connection, the data will be further pushed to the cloud, enabling you to see your data on the online dashboard. So if you have your Wave in the cabin, you can sync via Bluetooth on your phone, and use your phone's internet connection to push to the cloud if you like! If your Wave is at your regular residence, and you want to continue monitoring while you are far away in your cabin, you should check out our new Airthings Hub, which enables your data to stay updated without the need for Bluetooth syncing :) If you have any further questions, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected], chat with us using the Chat function on our website https://www.airthings.com/en-us/, or read more about radon and our products in our Help Center https://help.airthings.com/en/. We'll be happy to help :) All the best from Lucy at Airthings Support |

Question: | Where is this made in |
Answer: | China |
Question: | What battery life can be expected |
Answer: | The literature that comes with it claims a 3 year battery life. |
Question: | What is the warranty on the elifecity portable radon meter |
Answer: | None that I see |
Question: | My unit only has lines flashing, what is wrong |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |
Product features

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the sensor degrade over time making it less reliable |
Answer: | No, it doesnt beep enough to need to turn the alarm off. If its beeping after the initial plug-in alarm, then you should call your gas company. |
Question: | Hello. i have bought this product 2 months ago. i see the reading is always switching between 0 an d 1. is it ok? i smell nothing |
Answer: | The location depends on the type of gas. For natural gas put it high. For propane put it near the floor. I'm worried by the low reviews because the alarm is not detecting any low level of gas. |
Question: | Does the unit make any kind of sound when there is no gas present |
Answer: | I would definitely call your gas company |
Question: | Would like to know where the unit should be installed, I have cabinets above the stove, directions say 30 cm from the ceiling |
Answer: | As long as the number is not 0, there is a gas leak. The larger the value, the more serious the leak. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this run directly off a usb connection. For example in a vehicle usb port? Or is the charging brick connect to 120v required |
Answer: | It's for combustible gases, like methane, propane, natural gas. It is not a CO2 detector. |

Answer: | No |
Question: | Is this product compatible with Homekit |
Answer: | you will have to call them. 1-800-553-4676. I was unable to find any info. methane, butane and propane and others* but that doesnt say H2S specifically. |
